2016 Casterton trip
Bridge over the Wannon River at Casterton
Built in 1884, this is the longest surviving wooden railway bridge in Victoria, at 293 Metres. It crosses the Wannon River just out of Casterton, and has survived in very good condition, considering its age, because it does not bother anyone and is sitting isolated out in a farmer's paddock. A nearby bridge on the same line, carrying the line from the station yard in Casterton across the Glenelg River flats and then the river, was about 380-390 Metres long, but has since been demolished.
Coleraine Railway Station, Victoria, Australia.
The former Coleraine Railway Station is located on former railway land which is now a public park at the eastern end of Pilleau Street, two blocks south of Whyte Street (Glenelg Highway), and approximately 300 metres east of the central activities area of Coleraine. It was constructed in 1889 after the completion of the Hamilton-Coleraine railway extension in the previous year. The principle building is single-storey and is constructed of tuckpointed red brickwork on concrete footings with bluestone windowsills. The hipped main roof, segmental platform roof and large sunshades are corrugated iron. The platform verandah and roof plumbing are cast iron. The long rectangular building is a symmetrical composition. A central elliptical arched doorway with entry gable is flanked on each side by five windows with a continuous hood and plaster bands. On the platform side a series of double doors and windows, and a central arched doorway give access to the platform under the continuous verandah. The building is in very good condition and retains a good degree of integrity although the track and subsidiary structures have all gone. Near the station there is a mature Peppercorn Tree (Schinus molle), a traditional shade tree planted at stations.

Why is it significant?
The former Coleraine Railway Station is of historical significance because the arrival of the railway and its infrastructure represented an important stage in the development of the town and its hinterland which had hitherto relied on horse or bullock drawn transport. The arrival of the railway also brought about the demise of the Cobb and Co depot in Whyte Street. The station was used extensively to convey freight into and out of the district, and to carry passengers for business and pleasure.
The former Coleraine Railway Station is of architectural significance as a modified version of a standard design and as a substantial landmark building, being the largest surviving station in the Shire. Its conventional setting is complemented by the Peppercorn Tree in the grounds.

Chasing trains in Western Victoria Easter 1967

Easter 1967 was spent chasing trains in Western Victoria. In those days trains still ran their regular schedule, even over Easter.
I caught the Overland to Ararat where I was picked up by 2 Victorian mates at 5am for an Easter of chasing trains. This video is made up of what I have found from my 8mm film collection.
There is more I just have to find it.
We start in the middle section of Stawell Bank with a T class being banked by a J class, the Stawell pilot engine. Next from the top of the bank, the J has been added to a B class for the return trip back to Ararat. A quick look in the Ararat yard finds the B and the J have arrived and a R class is sitting at the western end waiting to depart to Hamilton.
J544 an J533 are found on an ARHS tour to Coleraine and Casterton. The footage is on the Casterton branch.
Last, a short sequence of a T and J class double heading on a Portland to Hamilton goods.
I will upload further footage when I find it.

Coleraine Flood Investigation 2017 18

Geography Units 1&2 Coastal Field Trip 2018
Here's a short compilation of drone footage taken on this year's VCE Geography units 1 and 2 Coastal Field Trip.
On the trip, students learnt about the measures that local and state governments are taking and the methods they are using to protect Australia's coast line from erosion. As well as this, students discovered the different causes of coastal erosion.
