Driving in Italy - Matera to Melfi Castle - Google Maps Guides us Across a Field
Driving in Italy - Driving the back Highways and small towns in southern Italy, from Matera to Melfi Castle. The 'adventurous' part starts around the 4 minute mark 4:00.
Google guides us off a great road and ultimately across a field on a washed out two tire track path. I am not sure why Google maps is programed to not discriminate between roads but it does make for some memorable experiences. Use the 'Speed' in 'Settings' to play this faster - Turn off the sound if you don't want to hear our comments.
(I used a Crosstour CR900 Dash Cam to record this.)
On the plane home I made this note about driving in Italy:
Traffic flowed
No road rage
No hostility
Cooperative
Aggressive
Giving
Fair
Assertive
Patient
Forgiving
In a symbiotic relationship
Felt like being in a family
Respectful
Helpful
Not much texting and driving, like they take driving serious
People were going super slow and super fast but most were going moderately.
Saw no accidents
Felt like we were all water flowing
Not a lot of stopping at stop signs
They stopped at lights
There no ownership of roads or lanes
I saw one police car in 1200 miles of driving

As to who should drive in Italy and who shouldn't:
If you’re music preference is:
Improvisational, do
If it is Classical, don’t.
When cooking or baking, if you follow the recipe to a T, don’t.
If you put a little of this and a little of that into a recipe, do.
If you are a hacker, do.
If you believe antivirus software will protect you , don’t.
If you believe you have to be able to do something before you try it, don’t.
if you believe that a part of learning is making mistakes, do.
If you see the world in black-and-white, don’t.
If you see the world in shades of gray, do.
If you ever order something off a menu and you have no idea what it is, do.
If you only oerder what you already know, don't
If you are territorial and believe in ownership, don’t.
If you get along collectively with people, do.
If you have ever used the phrase “he who hesitates is lost“, do.
If you tend to be a nice driver and let people into your lane, don’t.
If you tend to be an defensive person, don’t.
If you can transition between aggressiveness and giving, do.
If you were judgmental, don’t.
If you are forgiving, do.
if you believe in following every law & rule, don’t.
If you tend to think of rules as suggestions, do.
if you are a road rager, don’t.
If you believe people can cut you off while driving, don’t.
If you feel everyone should follow the rules of the road, don’t.
If you believe lanes are designed to indicate where cars travel, don’t.
If you sometimes like driving really slow and do it in the right lane, do.
If you believe there’s a speed limit and everyone should follow it, don’t.
If you believe the left lane is for passing, do.
If you believe there’s a speed limit and it doesn’t matter what lane you’re in, don’t.
I hope this helps!

The wonderful castle of Melfi rises above a hill of volcanic origin and overlooks both the historic center and the whole new inhabited area.
It still presents the walls that held, in a compact and insurmountable defense, the entire village of the time.
There are four entrances to the building, which can still be seen, three of which were built in the Angevin period
The castle is surrounded by ten towers, of which seven have a rectangular plan and three have a pentagonal plan.
Beyond the bridge we note an eighteenth-century portal which contains an epigraph that honors the exploits of Charles V of Habsburg and Andrea Doria.

Este castle, Ferrara, Emilia-Romagna, Italy, Europe
The Castello Estense (‘Este castle’) or castello di San Michele (‘St. Michael's castle’) is a moated medieval castle in the center of Ferrara, northern Italy. It consists of a large block with four corner towers. On the outside, the castle essentially presents the appearance given to it by Girolamo da Carpi in the second half of the 16th century. Surrounded by a moat, it has three entrances with drawbridges fronted by brickwork ravelins. The fourth entrance, to the east, was sacrificed to make room for the kitchens. At the bottom, the appearance of the building still recalls a mediaeval fortress, but higher up, da Carpi replaced the battlements with elegant balconies in white stone (resting on series of corbels), making it higher again by constructing a higher storey, covered by a skew roof. The towers were improved and made more graceful with roof terraces. The courtyard, nowadays fairly austere, was frescoed. In particular, at the top were portraits of all the ancestors (real and legendary) of the Este family: the only ones surviving, considerably damaged but still discernible, have been detached and placed under the portico on the east side of the courtyard. The wells were to provide water in time of drought; the round stone balls that are seen about the place are ammunition for catapults.

Google Maps Adventure Mode - The Road Less Traveled.
Google maps will often take you off the best, fastest, safest & easiest route and direct you onto roads that are barely roads, as in this video.
We were driving from Matera Italy to Melfi Castle. We were on a perfectly maintained, main road to Melfi, when Google maps tells us to take a right and then leads us to a washed out road across a field.
It was an adventure but could have been a dangerous had it been raining. Our car was bottoming out as you can hear in this video. In the end it has been fun to watch and listen to us but Google needs to address it in some form.

Cartografia
