HIKING CANADA: CASTLE BUTTE SK
Happy Thursday everybody! Hopefully your week has been kind and that I brighten your day :).
So as part of my 2017 Goals I am wanting to visit 12 places in 12 months! For the month of January I have picked CASTLE BUTTE, SK. This is one of my favourite places in Saskatchewan.
For those of you that don't know Castle Butte is located just south of Bengough, Sk on Hwy 34. It truly is the Gateway into the Big Muddy (which is a prime place for outdoor photography!). Anywhom I hope you enjoy our chilly hike up this huge hoodoo! Be sure to like, comment, and subscribe!

Big Muddy Castle Butte 1
Castle Butte is pretty famous to Saskatchewan residents, if you know anything about the Big Muddy. I love the Butte standing in the middle of the valley. You can climb to the top in about 5 minutes. There's only a gravel road to get to it, but it's only 5 minutes off the main highway.

Touring The Big Muddy Badlands
The Big Muddy Badlands are filled with stunning landscapes and rich history.I recently spent an entire day discovering the best way of exploring it all - joining a Badlands Tour hosted by Coronach Tourism. From a twenty metre wide ceremonial circle to the caves once used by notorious outlaws like Sam Kelly, the tour takes you places typically inaccessible to the public and allows you to explore freely.
The tours begin in the town of Coronach and the onslaught of knowledge begins right away and doesn’t stop. For example, did you know that the town was named after the winning horse in the 1926 Epsom Downs Derby in London, England? You travel between points of interest by vehicle and there’s a nifty radio system that allows all vehicles to hear the tour guide through an FM frequency. If you choose the “long tour” you’ll be spending all day out and about, so be sure to pack and lunch and have a full tank of gas before departing.
If you're interested in joining one of these fun tours, visit Coronach's website:

Great Southwest - Big Muddy
Big Muddy Badlands are an amazing spectacle of nature's architecture, and in the heart of it all is Castle Butte, a relic from the ice age.
The whole area is full of surprises, including the Shurniak Art Gallery in Assiniboia, home to world class art collections, and the Tunnels of Moose Jaw, located underground in Moose Jaw's historic downtown district.
Castle Butte is located 24 km southwest of Bengough, 110 km southeast of Assiniboia and 170 km south of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.
Avonlea Badlands
These fabulous badlands are located NE of the Town of Avonlea, Saskatchewan. Eight of these images can be seen in the Fall 2012 edition of Prairies North magazine.

Big Muddy 1
A spring day spent in the Big Muddy Valley in southern Saskatchewan. It was like moving into a different world. It defies the old adage of Saskatchewan being a flat land. From the velvet hills to the badlands geography it is one of the most amazing anomalies we have. Enjoy the view and visit if you get the chance.
