060: Beauty of Borrowdale (Seatoller, Grange and the Borrowdale Valley)
LAKE DISTRICT WALK IN THE BORROWDALE VALLEY FEATURING SEATOLLER, CASTLE CRAG AND GRANGE-IN-BORROWDALE
“Beauty of Borrowdale”
Filmed 3rd June 2016
Running time: 20 minutes
Whilst staying in the Lake District I decide to leave the car behind and catch the bus to Seatoller where my walk begins. Climbing up high I get wonderful views of Borrowdale before descending into the valley to follow a riverside path back towards Seatoller in time for a leisurely bus ride back to Keswick…..
Filmed in the Lake District in the county of Cumbria. Locations include Seatoller, Castle Crag, Grange, Longthwaite and the end of Honister Pass.
Written, researched, directed, camera and sound, edited and music by Patrick Leach.
Any other names credited in this film, i.e. Bob Morgan and Martin Roy, are pseudonyms, which I used at the time of making this film. However, I no longer use these pseudonyms as I want viewers to be clear that my films are completely my own work.

Wainwrights guides have inspired many people to come and explore the Lake District. Julia Bradbury heads off up Castle Crags, a small but spectacular fell in the jewels of the Borrowdale Valley in this walk as seen on BBC series Wainwright Walks.
Start at Grange, follow the edge of the river through the woodland, past the National Trust campsite at Hollows Farm. Follow the path south up the old quarry road. Then go left, up a short sharp ascent up the cragside. Up the zig zag path to the professional made summit cairn. Keep an eye out for the Herdwick sheep and caves!
Julia’s verdict: A mini mountain, perfect for a family walk about a mile and a half.

hollows farm Between Grange in Borrowdale and Castle Crag
Stayed in the woodland campsite for 15nights through May/June. Off peak its quiet and perfect for people wanting to get away from the hussle. In peak periods (w/e and bank hols) it gets busy. This isnt really an issue as the owner is very selective about who uses the site. I loved the place, crowds or no crowds.
It was clean, well kept and the owner was polite and helpful. The farm hand (Mat) was a legend, full of local info and a fountain of knowledge. A true outdoors lover.
The toilets are nearest to the woodland site and the showers are a 4min MAX walk from there. The walk is not a problem at all. The showers are clean and hot.

Lake District Walks - Castle Crag from Grange
A short film from our recent trip to the beautiful English Lake district. This walk takes in Castle Crag - the lowest of Wainwrights 214 fells. I'm accompanied on my walk by my wife Clare and our miniature Schnauzer Darcy. The weather was sunshine and showers but was the best day of the week we had been there so far.

Aerial Filming at Castle Crag in The Lake District
I finally got around to repairing my Phantom 2 after a crash I had during summer. A little bit of soldering and lots of motor cleaning later and it was ready to fly again. After some test flights I thought it would be good to practice some more intricate flying, and chose my favourite place in The Lakes, Castle Crag as a location. Hope you enjoy!

The lovely village of Rosthwaite in the Borrowdale valley, Keswick
On a recent trip back to the UK, I had the fortune to stay most of my time in the lovely village of Rosthwaite, situated in the Borrowdale valley. There are some excellent places to stay to suite most budgets, including the Borrowdale camp site! Here you will find a number of posh hotels, 'gastro pubs', B&B, farmhouses, quaint pubs and a number of excellent Youth hostels.
I can thoroughly recommend The Borrowdale Youth Hostel situated next to Johnny's Wood, Longthwaite (just past Rosthwaite). It has a warm welcoming lounge; excellent self-catering facilities; a small library; an internet facility and a brilliant drying room :-) The YH is ideally placed for exploring the mountains and crags in the area, whether you are a climber or a walker and of course it is perfectly placed for kayaking and water sports.
My friends Marjorie and Henry have made me welcome here since I first visited them in 1991 :-)

Our First Wainwright as a Family l CASTLE CRAG
Our First Wainwright as a Family l CASTLE CRAG
Castle Cragg stands in the North Western Fells of the Lake District in Cumbria. It is the smallest of the 214 Wainwright's fells at 290 m (950 ft).
The summit area is believed to have been an ancient hill fort, although the western section has been silced away by quarrying. It can only be scaled by means of a sloping crack to the south. At the highest point sits rock outcrop about eight feet high and twelve feet across, with a memorial to Borrowdale men in World War I, affixed to the outcrop.
Our first Wainwright as a family, we enjoy a walk outdoors and views in the area. Starting with the smallest we head out and start our wainwright journey wih the kids.

Disused Slate Quarry near Grange, Borrowdale, Cumbria, The Lake District - England
Here is a disused slate quarry that is well worth taking a short detour to have a look at, that we found whilst out on a walk around the bottom of Castle Crag near Grange in Borrowdale in The Lake District, and is on The Cumbria Way & Allerdale Ramble footpath.
To get to it, take the signposted footpath towards Castle Crag at the side of the cafe in Grange, and walk past the campsite on your left until you enter the woods near the footbridge where Broadslack Gill joins the River Derwent. Here take the footpath through the gate to the left, through Gowde Dub (Footpath to Castle Crag vears off to the right) and walk along the footpath that runs almost alongside the river (on your left) into Low Howes Wood towards High Howes Wood. As you pass Wilkinson's Dub, about halfway along this short stretch, the old quarry is on your right hand side, just a few yards off of the track.
Part of the quarry has been excavated in such a way that it has left a roof and cave which has fairly safe with caution easy access to have a look around.
