Lourdes - The Fortified Castle and the Pyrenean Musem
Proudly towering over the town, the castle, which was listed as an Historic Monument in 1995, is a major reminder of the town's history from the 10th to the 19th century.
In keeping with the motto of its founders, Louis and Margalide Le Bondifier, the Pyrenean Museum is one of the finest museums of art and popular traditions in the Pyrenees. It displays the richness and variety of the mountain cultures with a range of costumes, furniture, funeral rites and agricultural, pastoral and artisanal practices. Other more recent mementoes bring bygone times back to life, such as the beginnings of Pyreneism with the first ascents by Ramond de Carbonnières and Henry Russel.

The château fort de Lourdes is a historic castle located in Lourdes in the Hautes-Pyrénées département of France. It is strategically placed at the entrance to the seven valleys of the Lavedan. Since 1933, it has been listed as a monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture.
Besieged in 778 by Charlemagne, it became the residence of the Counts of Bigorre in the 11th and 12th centuries. In the 13th century, it passed into the possession of the Counts of Champagne, part of the kingdom of Navarre before coming under the crown of France under Philippe le Bel. It was ceded to the English by the Treaty of Brétigny in 1360, before returning to France at the start of the 15th century after two sieges. In the 17th century, the castle became a royal prison, and a state prison after the French Revolution, continuing in this role until the start of the 20th century when it became the Pyrenean Museum (Musée Pyrénéen) (1921) which it remains
The castle's origins go back to Roman times. Various remains from this era (fragments of sculpture, votive offerings, wall foundations) were brought to light by military engineering work in the 19th century. However, a consequence of these works was the destruction of the greater part of the ancient walls. The finds are exhibited on the site.
Today, the oldest remains date from the 11th and 12th centuries and consist of the foundations of the present fortifications. The castle was reinforced in the 13th and 14th centuries (construction of the keep), and again in the 17th and 18th centuries. The Notre-Dame-du-Château chapel houses the furniture of the former parish church of Saint-Pierre de Lourdes, destroyed in 1904. The present chapel is constructed with recycled material from Saint-Pierre de Lourdes.

Lourdes is a town in southwestern France, in the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains. It’s known for the Sanctuaires Notre-Dame de Lourdes, or the Domain, a major Catholic pilgrimage site. Each year, millions visit the Grotto of Massabielle (Grotto of the Apparitions) where, in 1858, the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to a local woman. In the grotto, pilgrims can drink or bathe in water flowing from a spring.
Lourdes is a small market town lying in the foothills of the Pyrenees. It is part of the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region in south-western France. Prior to the mid-19th century, the town was best known for the Château fort de Lourdes, a fortified castle that rises up from a rocky escarpment at its center.
In 1858 Lourdes rose to prominence in France and abroad due to the Marian apparitions claimed to have been seen by the peasant girl Bernadette Soubirous, who was later canonized. Shortly thereafter the city with the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes became one of the world's most important sites of pilgrimage and religious tourism. Today Lourdes hosts around six million visitors every year from all corners of the world. This constant stream of pilgrims and tourists transformed quiet Lourdes into the second most important center of tourism in France, second only to Paris, and the third most important site of international Catholic pilgrimage after Rome and the Holy Land. As of 2011, of French cities only Paris had more hotel capacity.
According to believers, the Virgin Mary appeared to Marie-Bernadette Soubirous on a total of eighteen occasions at Lourdes. Lourdes has become a major place of Roman Catholic pilgrimage and of miraculous healings. The 150th Jubilee of the first apparition took place on 11 February 2008 with an outdoor Mass attended by approximately 45,000 pilgrims.
Lourdes is located in southern France in the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains near the prime meridian. It is overlooked from the south by the Pyrenean peaks of Aneto, Montaigu, and Vignemale (3,298 m), while around the town there are three summits reaching up to 1,000 m (3,280.84 ft) which are known as the Béout, the Petit Jer (with its three crosses) and the Grand Jer (with its single cross) which overlook the town. The Grand Jer is accessible via the funicular railway of the Pic du Jer. The Béout was once accessible by cable car, although this has fallen into disrepair. A pavilion is still visible on the summit.
The current municipal area of Lourdes was inhabited in prehistoric times. In Roman times it had to be, since the first century BC, an oppidum hill where today stands the fortress, as it is testified by the numerous finds came to light in the second half of the nineteenth century (remains of walls, fragments of statues and tombstones). At the foot of the citadel stood a pagan temple dedicated to the gods of water, whose buildings have come partially to light soon after the demolition of the parish of Saint Pierre
Yearly from March to October the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes is a place of mass pilgrimage from Europe and other parts of the world. The spring water from the grotto is believed by some to possess healing properties. The five-domed St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Lourdes was designed by Myroslav Nimciv, while its Byzantine interior polychrome decorations were executed by artist Jerzy Nowosielski. The church is about a 10-minute walk from the basilica and the grotto, on a street named in honour of Ukraine, 8 Rue de l'Ukraine, situated on a narrow piece of property close to the railroad station. Visible from the basilica, the height of the building makes up for its breadth.

Kendog Heart of Mary Pilgrimage 5-20-19
Today started with our pilgrimage walking to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception for Mass. I thinking the pilgrimage journeys set a personal touch with God and us especially when done as a group for mass. The priest from Canada, Fr. Cyril, had a memorable sermon about God and love using a Jimmie Durante story about not having to like someone, but loving them as someone made by God. After mass we walked to the Crypt and rubbed St Peter statue on the way for a safe journey. A small group of us strolled through the grounds on our way to see the medieval castle. The Castle Fort Pyrenean Museum was full of documented articles that showed the life of the French and Spanish Pyrenees over the centuries. I think for me was climbing the Tower steps that put relevance to the period as I looked out through some of the scratched plexiglass for a view of the surrounding countryside to get a real feeling of what these buildings meant to people living in the dark ages. The view was like being on top of the clouds as you can see the entire valley to the mountains. After the castle visit, our small group stopped for lunch and ended up with a pizza and something else that was like a quesadilla and was very filling, but I forget the name. Being full, I wanted to walk a little more, and Monica and Mike wanted some pictures of the modern apparition pictures in the Underground Brasilia of Pope Pius X. This acquiring took some time, and I didn’t appreciate the artwork until looking at them at home and bringing out their beauty even more. The evening had showers, but since it was our last night in Lourdes I wanted to see the evening events and get what I could in the way of pictures. I was taken aback by the number of people coming out in the rain to say the rosary and light their candles. For me this was very spiritual place and also a moving moment as my heart was sorrowfully filled with the thought of leaving tomorrow.

Lourdes
Lourdes (Gascon Occitan Lorda or Lourde) is a commune in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Midi-Pyrénées region in south-western France. The former regional language of this area used to be Gascon Occitan (or Gasconha, Occitània which was the spoken language at the time of Saint Bernadette Soubirous), but has been largely supplanted by French as in many regions of France.
Lourdes is a small market town lying in the foothills of the Pyrenees, famous for the Marian apparitions of Our Lady of Lourdes said to have occurred in 1858 to Bernadette Soubirous. At that time, the most prominent feature of the town was the fortified castle that rises up from a rocky escarpment at its centre.

The Cathedral Builders... St Jacques and the Cagot.
The Cagot were a shunned and despised people who resided in the foothill regions of the French Pyrenees. Forced to live separately, banned from intermarrying with locals, not allowed to walk barefoot and were accused of being lepers, cretins, webbed footed and without earlobes (among other things) they were, in fact, members of a Guild of Carpenters who had the sacred knowledge of the Sacred Art of the Cathedral.
