Inverness is a city on Scotland’s northeast coast, where the River Ness meets the Moray Firth. It's the largest city and the cultural capital of the Scottish Highlands. Its Old Town features 19th-century Inverness Cathedral, the mostly 18th-century Old High Church and an indoor Victorian Market selling food, clothing and crafts. The contemporary Inverness Museum and Art Gallery traces local and Highland history.
Inverness meaning Mouth of the River Ness) is a city in the Scottish Highlands. Inverness is the administrative centre for the Highland council area, and is regarded as the capital of the Highlands. Inverness lies near two important battle sites: the 11th-century battle of Blàr nam Fèinne against Norway which took place on The Aird and the 18th-century Battle of Culloden which took place on Culloden Moor.
Inverness is the northernmost city in the United Kingdom and lies within the Great Glen (Gleann Mòr) at its north-eastern extremity where the River Ness enters the Moray Firth. At the latest, a settlement was established by the 6th century with the first royal charter being granted by Dabíd mac Maíl Choluim (King David I) in the 12th century. The Gaelic king Mac Bethad Mac Findláich (MacBeth) whose 11th-century murder of King Duncan was immortalised in Shakespeare's play Macbeth, held a castle within the city where he ruled as Mormaer of Moray and Ross.
Inverness College is the main campus for the University of the Highlands and Islands. With around 8,500 students, Inverness College hosts around a quarter of all the University of the Highlands and Islands' students, and 30% of those studying to degree level.
Inverness is linked to the Black Isle across the Moray Firth by the Kessock Bridge. It has a railway station with Abellio ScotRail services to Perth, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Thurso, Wick and Kyle of Lochlash. Inverness Airport is located 15 km east of the city and has scheduled flights to airports across the UK including London, Manchester, Belfast and the islands to the north and west of Scotland. Inverness is connected to London Euston by the Caledonian Sleeper, which departs six times a week and by the Virgin Trains East Coast operated Highland Chieftain to London King's Cross which runs daily.

Explore the historic city of Inverness with a visit to Inverness Museum and Art Gallery. Situated right in the historic centre of the city at the foot of the Castle hill, the museum is a treasure trove of artifacts relating to the history of Highland Scotland.
Inverness' first museum was opened in 1826, since then the museum has undergone a number of transformations, most recently in 2007, when the building was extensively refurbished with a range of new displays and visitor facilities.
The exhibitions begin on the ground floor with geology and natural history as well as the rich archaeological heritage of the Highlands. Continue upstairs to discover the more recent history of the Highlands. Here you will find Jacobite memorabilia, Inverness silverware, authentic Highland weapons and bagpipes. The museum offers a great deal more than just exhibitions and displays, with a programme of lunchtime talks, workshops, recitals as well as activities for children and adults.
The Art Gallery hosts an exciting programme of local fine art and craft exhibitions, with a variety of changing featured artists.

Castle Stuart, near Inverness, Scotland.
Castle Stuart has all the romance and atmosphere of a typical scottish castle. When Mary Queen of Scots came back to Scotland in 1561, after the death of her husband, she gave this land to her half brother, James Stuart, granted him the title Earl of Moray and he ruled Scotland as Regent for her. Unfortunately, he was murdered and the Castle Stuart was finally completed in 1625 by James Stuart, 3rd Earl of Moray. Today, Castle Stuart is the second best castle in Europe for accommodation.

For Fun things to do in Aberdeen, Scotland see here:
During our MONTH IN SCOTLAND we did a LOT of family activities. In 10 Things to Do on your Family Trip to Inverness, Scotland - Capital of the Scottish Highlands we show you just some of the things to do at Inverness. Most lists focus on the day trips from Inverness you can take around the little city near Loch Ness. And there are a lot of things to do in the area, but we wanted to focus on the city itself. It's a charming, rather small, city on the Ness river where it flows into the Moray Firth. It's leafy and green in the summer and I think one of our favorite things was just walking along the river. It was so peaceful and beautiful. Your first stop is at Inverness Castle which provides a great view and is a great place for things to do Inverness. We hope you will enjoy these fun family activities, most of which are free, and let us know on the website, instagram, or facebook all the things we missed.
