Castle Gardens Lisburn; A Refreshing Walk in the Garden
If visiting Lisburn City - the Castle Gardens is a nice place for a walk - one of the best things to do in Lisburn - perfect for a family or just to chill for a little while. There are a few other nice places to check out in Lisburn as well - do check out some of our links below.
Lisburn is known to be the third largest city in all of Northern Ireland and this brings us to the point of visiting and exploring its streets and some of the most important touristic attractions which one should head for once being in the city. One of those most visited places and which happens to be the most important is the Castle Gardens in Lisburn.
Lisburn Castle Gardens is the ideal place for those who want to have a relaxing and refreshing walk by nature or even those who just want to sit in a place steeped in history and bring their minds to rest for some time. There are some statues located in the garden that would immediately link you to the history of the place and will bring you to know more about it all.
Actually, Lisburn Castle Gardens is the most historically significant open space in Lisburn and it was also the place where Lisburn Castle was once situated; a 17th century manor house that was once built by the Conway family, the landlords of Lisburn. This garden was not a public place until the death of the last landlord of Lisburn, Sir Richard Wallace, and his wife, Lady Wallace, that their heir Sir Murray Scott gifted it to the people of Lisburn in 1903. The Manor House was actually destroyed during the great fire that took place in Lisburn in 1707.
The upper section of the garden dates back to the Victorian times and it actually carries many historical significant features that include the 1677 red sandstone gateway, the Wallace drinking fountain, and a memorable erected in 1891 that honors Lisburn's landlord Sir Richard Wallace.
There were some archaeological excavations that took place in Lisburn Castle Gardens during its renovation times and at this point there were different 17th century artifacts discovered that include a double flight staircase and a gazebo; some of these different artifacts are now placed and found in Lisburn Museum which is located in Lisburn city centre.
What you are going to see in Lisburn Castle Gardens is not the same as the old one which used to be found back in the 17th century of course, there are different renovations done to the place
by Lisburn city council that was even supported by Grant Aid from The Heritage Lottery Fund in 2008.
It always feels different to visit a garden that dates to years and years back and takes its part in the history of the whole city, but in addition to the history of the place, it is also considered important to enjoy the place as being one green area that you could walk through, sit in, and have some kind of refreshed air away from all the tension that you might be passing by in your daily life.
Lisbrun city is not far away from Belfast, so it won't be hard to go and visit it if you have some spare time which you are willing to spend somewhere else - it is only 8 miles southwest of Belfast - and there are actually different things to visit there in addition to walking down the streets of the city.
While exploring Lisburn Castle Gardens, we also had the chance to visit the famous Irish Linen Centre and Lisburn Museum which would take you through the linen industry of the city and it also offers some workshops and free tours ( there is also the famous Christ Church Cathedral which was named St. Thomas Church before and which is also important when it comes to this city ( the Island Arts Centre is another place and option to consider ( and finally there's the famous Giant's Ring (
We have been to Lisburn before several times and in every single one of them we managed to explore something new about this beautiful city. We have been through a walk before that included passing by those different locations and we actually fell in love with it all; exploring the streets, passing by all these shops and boutiques, and at the same time knowing that one of Northern Ireland's biggest shopping destinations, the Bow Street Mall, is actually located in Lisburn and it has more than 70 shops (
If you are looking forward to explore a new city other than Belfast, you could head to Lisburn for being close, for once being part of the Belfast Metropolitan Area, and also for being situated on River Lagan forming the boundary between county Antrim and county Down.

Hillsborough Castle & Gardens

Hillsborough Castle is an official government residence in Northern Ireland. It is the residence of the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, and the official residence in Northern Ireland of Queen Elizabeth II and other members of the British royal family when they visit the region, as well as a guest house for prominent international visitors.
Hillsborough Castle, which is located in the village of Hillsborough in north-west County Down, is not a true castle. It is a Georgian country house built in the 18th century for the Hill family, Marquesses of Downshire, who owned it until 1922, when the 6th Marquess sold the mansion and its grounds to the British government.
In buying it, the government solved a practical problem. Under the Government of Ireland Act 1920 a new, distinct region of the United Kingdom called Northern Ireland had been created within the traditional province of Ulster but minus three counties—Cavan, Donegal, and Monaghan—which became part of the Irish Free State. Executive authority had been vested for both Northern Ireland and sister region Southern Ireland in the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, who was supposed to be one of two all-Ireland features (along with the Council of Ireland) in the new home rule structure. However, that office was abolished in a law change following the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921, which in effect aborted Southern Ireland (which had in reality only existed on paper) and established the Irish Free State.
A new office for Northern Ireland alone was created, that of Governor of Northern Ireland. As the Viceregal Lodge in Dublin became unavailable, physically and politically, a new residence was needed. Hillsborough Castle, though outside the largest city of Northern Ireland, Belfast, was deemed a suitable location. After some renovations, the first governor, The 3rd Duke of Abercorn, moved in during 1925. Upon becoming the official residence of the governor, the building was officially renamed Government House.
Lisburn Residence of Sir Richard Wallace 19 C. Philanthropist
I've just been exploring Castle Gardens Lisburn, with their Wallace statue, 1854 Sebastopol cannon, Wallace fountain and more. Coming on to Castle street I noticed this imposing obviously historic mansion.
It turns out that this was the Lisburn residence of Sir Richard Wallace when he found time to tear himself away from Paris. (Well who could blame him? Not a difficult choice-Lisburn or Paris. lol )
Sir Richard Wallace, 1st Baronet (21 June 1818 – 20 July 1890) was an English art collector.
He was the illegitimate son of Richard Seymour-Conway, 4th Marquess of Hertford, for whom he worked as secretary, and inherited his father's unentailed estates, and extensive collection of European art in 1871. Wallace expanded the collection himself, and in 1897, after his death, the collection was donated to the nation by Wallace's widow. It is now located in what was his London home, Hertford House, Manchester Square, London - which houses the Wallace Collection. His bequests to the people of Lisburn in Northern Ireland include the Wallace Park and The Wallace High School. His town house on Lisburn's Castle Street is now used as offices by the South Eastern Regional College.
Wallace achieved fame during the Siege of Paris for notable acts of charity. By the end of the siege, Wallace is estimated to have privately contributed as much as 2.5 million (1870) francs to the needy of Paris. This is perhaps equivalent to $6.5 million in 2010 money. As a result, Wallace was thought to be the most popular British citizen inhabiting Paris during the siege. The last balloon to leave Paris before its capitulation was named for him as was a Paris boulevard. He received a Legion d'Honneur for his efforts.
In 1872 he donated 50 drinking fountains, known as Wallace fountains, to the City of Paris and to Lisburn. Some can still be seen today. Upon his death in 1890, he was interred in Le Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.
Antrim Castle Gardens - County Antrim, Northern Ireland
Antrim Castle Gardens which is also referred to as Antrim Castle Gardens and Clotworthy House is considered a historic gem which people will never find anywhere else in Northern Ireland; it is the place that was supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund in order to become in the same measure of beauty which we see today.
As much as this location is considered a beautiful green space that one could stroll down to enjoy, it is also considered a historic place which tourists come to visit in order to check the Clotworthy House that is found inside - and which is the reason behind referring to it in the name of the whole place - and at the same time get the chance to visit the Garden Heritage Exhibition in order to know more about the story of Massereene Family.
Antrim Castle, which is located in the same place where the gardens are situated, was also referred to and known as Massereene Castle. The Massereene Castle passed through lots of stages in its development; it was erected in stages between 1613 and 1662, it was destroyed by fire in 1922, and it was finally demolished in the 1970's. In addition to the castle, there was an Italian tower built there in 1887 and a gatehouse which was built in 1818 with twin neo-Tudor towers, with older connecting walls.
People in county Antrim - and in Northern Ireland in general - consider Antrim Castle Gardens a living museum that carries over four centuries of culture and heritage. In these 60-acre gardens, there are some features which you will need to check and which include visiting the Large Parterre, Her Ladyship's Pleasure Garden and Yew Tree Pond. Along the walk in this garden, you will at some point come across the sculpture which is named The Massereene Wolfhound which is considered part of the history of this family that played a great role in bringing this garden to life and giving it the chance to become a historical place until this day.
In order to bring back lots of the things and features which used to make this garden different and take it back to its 17th-century reality, there were lots of things done and a lot of hard work exerted in the major programme that was dedicated to it by the Heritage Lottery Fund that was considered the biggest garden restoration project to be seen in Northern Ireland.
As much as the whole place is mainly about the old restored garden, you will also get the chance to see those new and ornamental gardens during your visit. It is easy to reach this garden and there you will find heritage, you will find education and interpretation, as well as community arts' facilities which you will find them scattered all around Clotworthy House that is part of Antrim Castle Gardens.
There are different events that sometimes take its place in this place and one of these examples is the Christmas event which we even got the chance to attend - it was beautifully different for us as adults as well as for the kids for the different games and other sweets which it managed to serve them ( - we definitely recommend this place for those who are trying to visit a place in county Antrim which will mix between heritage and history as well as the new features and informative things which are all found there.
County Antrim, which is one of the six counties that are found in Northern Ireland, carries several destinations and touristic attractions that people could go to and visit. From the long list that is found out there, we would recommend Bushmills Distillery which is located in Bushmills that is in county Antrim ( Another option is the famous Dark Hedges which is located in Ballymoney in county Antrim as well and which became even more famous after it appeared in the famous Game of Thrones movie series ( Carrickfergus is one destination in county Antrim which we have been to before and which we would recommend as well ( and we would also recommend Carnfunnock Park which is one of the things that we believe should be done in county Antrim - especially if you have kids and want them to enjoy the time along with you - (
There are actually lots of things and places in county Antrim and the suggestions always depend on the place you are residing in and how far you will be from all these different places; always search our channel according to your location and you will definitely find lots of places on it which you could visit and lots of things which you could actually do when it comes to Northern Ireland.
Our trip to Antrim Castle Gardens was all worth it, we enjoyed the mix of history and modernity and that is exactly why we are recommending the place to you all.

Muiderslot Castle Gardens, Netherlands
On my second day in Amsterdam, I took a tour out to Muiderslot Castle. This is a look at the vegetable garden (warmoeshof). I don't know the names of everything in the garden but this a walk through it with me. Lend in to the conversation that I'm having with myself and comment below if you know any of the plants. There is not much information available on the gardens. I did look for a book in the museum shop but they just don't have one in print.
Thanks for watching, Have a Great Day!

Lisburn City - A Walk Through the City - County Antrim. Check out Lisburn Northern Ireland
A short walk around Lisburn City - only 8 miles southwest from Belfast City Centre - on the River Lagan - well worth a visit.
For people wondering where is Lisburn in Northern Ireland - it's just outside of Belfast - so it is easy to get to, if you have some time to spare to check out the area.
Lisburn is the third largest city in Northern Ireland and that gives it much of importance just like the attention that is always given to Belfast - it is even 8 miles northwest from Belfast's city centre, which means that it is also close for people to reach and check what it has for them.
This city, Lisburn, is situated on River Lagan and thus it forms the boundary between county Antrim and county Down. Lisburn is also part of Belfast Metropolitan Area and it has several touristic attractions or places that people could visit while they are in the city, which include the Irish Linen Museum ( Christ Church Cathedral ( as well as Lisburn Castle Gardens.
During our visit to Lisburn - was not the first time though :-) - we managed to walk down the streets of the city, check those shops and boutiques scattered all around the place, and eventually entering those touristic attractions and landmarks which managed to be the spotlight of Lisburn in general, and for all the shopping lovers out there, Lisburn is also considered one of the biggest shopping destinations in Northern Ireland with Bow Street Mall that occupies over 70 stores.
The Irish Linen Centre and Lisburn Museum started its journey with dealing with the local history regarding Lisburn and the Lagan Valley but it was then integrated with the history of textiles in 1994 when the Irish linen centre opened. This linen centre and museum is worth the visit because it collects and preserves items from the history of both Ireland's linen industry and the Lagan Valley.
In this museum, there are even some galleries to walk through and see those materials which are placed regarding Lisburn's cultural scene that focuses on local personalities, artists, poets, and writers.
In addition to visiting the place to explore more about the history of Lisburn when it comes to this industry, in this place there are also some free guided tours offered as well as those workshops that help the visitors in exploring the history of Irish linen and also a good day out for the school children :-)
Our next stop in Lisburn city was the Christ Church Cathedral. The Christ Church Cathedral was first called and referred to as St. Thomas's Church. This church was previously burnt down and the work which you will find standing today is commenced in 1708 after this incidence. After the reconstruction that took place in 1662, St. Thomas was designated the cathedral church. From that point, Christ Church Cathedral became one of the most important places to visit when it comes to Lisburn city in Northern Ireland.
Moving forward with the rest of our trip, we reached the next stop which we also recommend for all those who would be visiting Lisburn which is the Castle Gardens ( Lisburn Castle Gardens might be one of the most visited places in the city that also carries some ties with history. This place is good for those who want to walk among nature or just sit there relaxing their minds, it is also a perfect destination for those who want to see some of the old statues which might be taking their place in the garden.
The upper section of the garden dates back to the late Victorian times and there are some historical significant features that include the 1677 red sandstone gateway, the Wallace drinking fountain, and a memorable erected in 1891 that honors Lisburn's landlord Sir Richard Wallace.
All these things tell that the gardens is related back to history and that even comes in addition to some of the artifacts which were found in it and which most of them are displayed at the museum in the centre of the city.
Lisburn is filled with places to visit and inspect and in addition to those which we have mentioned and been to, there is also the Island Arts Centre ( the famous Giant's Ring ( and checking those different events which might be only taking place in the city annually, such as the Christmas market for example ( or else checking something like the Foote Farm which is held annually and which allows people to get to the farm on weekends and experience the day there (
Being the third largest city in Northern Ireland should be enough to convince you to come and check this city, but also the attractions will bring you right here.

Places to see in ( Hillsborough - UK )
Hillsborough is a village, townland and civil parish in County Down, Northern Ireland, situated 19 km from the city of Belfast. It is within the Lisburn and Castlereagh District Council area. A prominent feature of the east and south approaches to Hillsborough is a 5-mile wall which encloses the Park Dam, an artificial lake, and the forest surrounding it. In 2007 Hillsborough won 3rd place in the Ulster in Bloom large village competition.
The historic centre of the village contains significant amounts of Georgian architecture. The village was originally a compact settlement hosting a regular market. More recently land to the north of the village has been developed as housing and Hillsborough has become part of the commuter belt of Belfast. In recent years townhouses and apartments have been built closer to the centre of the village, and the former civic building of Lisburn Borough Council has been converted to residential use. That building is in twentieth century neo-Georgian style. Development to the east of the village is continuing to swell Hillsborough's population. The associated settlements of Culcavy and Aghnatrisk to the north-west are also growing.
Before 1661, the townland was known as Crumlin or Cromlin (from Irish Cromghlinn, meaning 'crooked glen'). By 1661 the townland and the settlement within it had been renamed Hillsborough. It was named after Sir Arthur Hill, who built Hillsborough Fort in 1650 to command the road from Dublin to Carrickfergus. The Hill family became the Earls of Hillsborough, then Marquises of Downshire.
A prominent memorial to the 3rd Marquis of Downshire (and closely resembling Nelson's column in Trafalgar Square, London) stands to the south of the village and is visible throughout much of the surrounding area.
Hillsborough Castle a two-storey Georgian mansion, was Government House from 1924 until 1973 and is the official residence of Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom (and other royal family members) when visiting the province and the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland from 1973. Hillsborough Castle was the venue for the signing of the Anglo-Irish Agreement in 1985. Former Prime Minister Tony Blair stayed at the castle on many occasions during negotiations related to the peace process, and he hosted George W. Bush at the Castle for a one night visit in 2003
There are many interesting walks and local pubs offering delicacies to enjoy; and is home to a public forest park and lake that form the picturesque setting for the original fort residence of Lord Hillsborough. Hillsborough hosts an International Oyster Festival each year, generally September. This attracts thousands of visitors from as far away as Japan, Russia, the United States and Argentina) The festivities include boat racing, parachuting, garden fêtes, oyster eating and Guinness drinking – all in the name of fun, revelry and charity.
The historic Parish Church dedicated to Saint Malachy is one of the finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture. It was built by the 1st Marquis of Downshire between 1760 and 1774, in the hope that the church would become the cathedral of the diocese of Down. In addition to its imposing setting, it boasts two 18th century organs, a peal of ten bells and a number of works by notable craftsmen of the era, including the Colours of the County Down Battalion of Carson's Ulster Volunteers. Today it is a vibrant parish in the Church of Ireland Diocese of Down and Dromore
Hillsborough is (in somewhat exaggerated terms) said to be the birthplace of the United States – due to a disastrous meeting that took place between Benjamin Franklin and Lord Hillsborough (then the acting Secretary of State for the Colonies) in the early 1770s. They are reported to have hated each other at first sight and, on leaving three days into a week-long visit, Franklin returned home to convince the dissident colonists he represented that there was no alternative but to initiate immediate revolution. The 'Declaration of Independence' in July 1776 followed shortly after Franklin's return.

BBC News McGuinness slept in Queens bed at Hillsborough Castle
Northern Ireland's Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness raised a few laughs - and perhaps just as many eyebrows - when he revealed he had slept in the Queen's bed at Hillsborough Castle.
Mr McGuinness, a former IRA leader, told the story during an after dinner speech at the 18th century castle, the Queen's official residence in Northern Ireland.
Hillsborough was used during hot-house political talks in 2010 over the transfer of policing powers to Stormont from Westminster.
Mr McGuinness told 150 delegates attending a gala opening of the international business conference that Sinn Féin was assigned the Queen's bedroom during days of negotiations with the Government.

Antrim Castle Gardens Christmas - Enchanted Winter Garden
Antrim Castle Gardens Christmas display is a great day/night out in November & December each year. The Antrim & Newtownabbey Council event has built up a great buzz in recent years and is very popular - so do get down early!
The official information includes the following: Bigger and better than ever before, come and see the Gardens transformed into an enchanted world.
Christmas is the favorite part of the year for almost all the people out there and this goes back for all the lights, the decorations, and the special treats which are only related to it - we should say that we are the same; its our favorite month of the year too!
One of the different places which we wanted to go visit and check was the Enchanted Winter Garden in County Antrim and which has been there for a couple of years, so we also wanted to see the kind of change that might be taking place this time.
This place is created for all the members of the family out there - kids and adults - and it is related to Antrim Castle Gardens ( This year's magical Christmas highlight and experience is different with the 40m Ferris Wheel that will give all the visitors the chance to star gaze all over Antrim Town and beyond.
From the other different attractions for this place this year, there is the Christmas train which is for all those younger members of the family, the old fashioned carousel which the kids will fall in love with its colors and lights, the sparkling swings that twinkle and glitter in the gardens and give the little ones the happiness they came for while swinging through the lights, and there is also the Christmas boat that swings its passengers high and low among the trees and gives them all a thrilling whoosh through the winter garden.
In addition to those rides which the kids could enjoy, there are still other beautiful things that one could enjoy about the Enchanted Winter Garden in County Antrim, such as the lighting installation of this year which is even more dazzling and different than the last ones since there are thousands of sparkling bulbs and twinkling fairy lights that awash the trees and turrets in color, wonderland wood where visitors should stroll to the sugar drop stop and wander through the lollipop lane, the festive fayre which serves different yummy treats and which we got the chance to try the marshmallows on fire (S'mores), and the old Christmas Inn which will be serving different drinks in the heart of Clotworthy Courtyard and which might include hot chocolate, mulled wine and hot fruit punch in order to bring cheer to the young as well as the old.
In addition to all previous things mentioned about the things to be found inside the Enchanted Winter Garden in Antrim Castle and in order to keep the experience complete, there is live music that will be surrounding all those people strolling around the place, for local musicians who will be playing brass, silver, strings, and different other instruments. There is a schedule for this musical part, with a different act for every evening; so if you are planning to visit more than once then don't worry because if you changed the day, you will not be walking the place listening to the same music.
Like any other Christmas place, the Antrim Castle Gardens for Christmas offer a place where people could have some offers for Christmas shopping and where they could buy some gifts. The Baubles & Bows is the gift shop in the Enchanted Christmas Garden that offers some beautiful things you should check if you are there.
Every country will have its special lights, gardens, and markets to celebrate Christmas and here in Northern Ireland, we did not only enjoy those beautiful decorations and lights in the Antrim Castle Gardens where the Enchanted Winter Garden is located, but we have also been to Belfast Christmas Market where we enjoyed the new 20 stalls which are added this year and also loved walking through the lights, seeing what the people have to offer there, and at the same time enjoying the hot drinks along with some treats and goodies which are offered in those markets as well. Since we were in Belfast, it was also good to go to Victoria Square in the centre of Belfast where we believe that it is considered the best place for Christmas shopping for all the shops it has and at the same time for being the place where one could find all the things that he/she is searching for ( you could also check our visit to Belfast Christmas Market last year and enjoy our experience there as well (
If you are near then you should go have some fun walking around the place and give your kids the cheer they want with riding all those things found out there - Merry Christmas ????
