HOW TO REACH THE CASTLE HILL IN BUDAPEST -- True Guide Budapest
The Buda Castle is located on top of the Castle Hill on the Buda side of the river Danube. Despite its elevated location, it very easy to access.
In this video, I show you 3 traditional methods (walking, taking bus #16, taking the funicular), 2 lazy methods (taking one of the lifts or an escalator) and 1 touristy method.
I. Traditional methods:
(1) walking
- steep hill walk starting from the left side of the funicular in Clark Adam ter
- stairs from the other side of the tunnel
- taking a tram to Batthyanyi ter, walking through the square by the left side of the market, little Paris square, hidden staircase and lift by the side of the Hilton
(2) take bus #16, 3 stops and you're there
(3) Funicular / Cable car (we call it Sikló that stands for water snake), be prepared for long queues
II. Lazy methods:
(1) Take one of the lifts

With only a short amount of time in Hungary we knew Budapest had to be the place to visit, travel and vlog. Today was exploring the Buda side of the city starting with Chain Bridge, then up to Buda Castle and further around to Fishermans Bastion.
The Chain Bridge has so many interesting stories about it's build, but we love the story of the Hungarian stunt pilot flying underneath, year before we visited in 2018.
Walking over the Chain Bridge we arrived at the base of the Buda Castle, aka Budapest Castle. There was a festival on so we couldnt get full access to the Castle grounds sadly, but the view back over the city of Budapest and the Chain Bridge made it worth it.
Further around to Fishermans Bastion we discovered the most epic little church, more views of Budapest and hundreds of people. Definitely walk the back streets of Fishermans Bastion and get lost in the little lane ways.

Budapest Castle Hill Funicular Tram (Budavári Sikló) Cable Car - Budapest attractions
We are in Budapest the capital city of Hungary. My wife and I were here for a 4-5 day long weekend during the Easter in April. This footage is of the Funicular Railway which was opened on March 2, 1870. The Funicular train or Budavári Sikló as it is called in Hungarian connects the Adam Clark Square and the Széchenyi Chain Bridge with the higher lying absolutely must see Budapest Tourist attraction, The Budapest Castle (Budapest Palace).
The Funicular cable car is operated by the Budapest public transport company the BKK, but even though my wife and I had a Budapest 72 Hour Tourist card which entitled us to unlimited public transport we still had to pay the fee to ride this rather unique cable train. The price was not very much and I think that the Budapest Card even allowed for a discount. We bought a return ticket to the top of the Buda Castle Hill and back. The view at the top is breathtaking and this is definitely a Must see Budapest attraction / Must try Budapest attraction (the Buda Castle in itself is the top attraction in Budapest or at least on the top of the top attractions list).
From the top of the hill the views of the Danube River with the Chain Bridge (Széchenyi) passing over it, not to mention the parliament building the cathedral and grand luxury hotels such as the Four Seasons or the French Luxury Hotel Chain, The Sofitel. This is a fantastic place to view the city of Budapest in both daylight and just as breathtaking with the cities night lights turned on.
And now for a little Technical information:
The Funicular Tram's railway line is 95 meters long and ies at a height of 51 meters. The railway is operated with two Double Decker Tram Cars with a capacity of 24 passengers per car. The two tram trains are named Margit and Gellert.
And here is a definition by wiki of what a Funicular Train is:
A funicular, also known as an inclined plane or cliff railway, is a cable railway in which a cable attached to a pair of tram-like vehicles on rails moves them up and down a steep slope; the ascending and descending vehicles counterbalance each other.
Funicular Tram Railroads are quite common around Europe and around the world. Some of European oldest Funicular cable cars can be tried in Austria (Festungsbahn from 1892), Czech Republic (Petřín funicular from 1891).
Wiki writes about Budapest, Budapest, Hungary’s capital, is bisected by the River Danube, and the 19th-century Chain Bridge connects its hilly Buda district with flat Pest. A funicular runs up Castle Hill to Buda’s Old Town, where the Budapest History Museum traces life from Roman times onwards. Trinity Square is home to 13th-century Matthias Church and the turrets of the Fishermen’s Bastion, which offer sweeping views...

Buda Castle and Buda Hill - Budapest, Hungary.
Castle Hill is a large limestone plateau, where you'll find many of Budapest's most important historic sites and tourist attractions. The most popular way to reach the Castle Hill is by funicular, even though: car, bus or walking are possible options. Settlement here dates as far back as the Stone Age, resulting in an interesting mix of important medieval ruins and architectural highlights from the last few centuries.
Today, the most prominent building is Buda Castle, a huge palatial structure that dominates the hill and offers views over the beautiful Danube. Like much of Budapest, it's a great area to explore after nightfall, when it's lit up in spectacular fashion. Built in the 13th century, the first castle was located on the south spur of Castle Hill to provide protection from attacks by Mongols and Tartars. The current incarnation of Buda Castle is a massive 18th-century Neo-Baroque-style structure of more than 200 rooms. These are arranged in a symmetrical layout around the 62-meter-high central dome facing the Danube. The castle was badly damaged in WWII, but much of the exterior has been restored. Some parts are open to the public, and these contain its museums and galleries: the Hungarian National Gallery, the Budapest History Museum, and the Széchenyi National Library.
The Matthias Fountain, is a monumental fountain in the western forecourt of Buda Castle. Alajos Stróbl’s, Neo-Baroque masterpiece is one of the most frequently photographed landmark in the Hungarian capital. It is sometimes called the Trevi Fountain of Budapest.
The Fountain of the Fishing Children on the Danube terrace, is the work of sculptor Károly Senyey from 1912. It depicts two children grappling with a fish. The fine workmanship of the fishing net is remarkable. The fountain was removed in 1955 and re-erected at Rakoczi Square in Pest, but brought back to its original place in 1976. It was restored in 2001.
To the southeast of the Habsburg Steps entrance, just in front of the Royal Palace, stands a statue of Eugene of Savoy, the Habsburg prince who wiped out the last Turkish army in Hungary at the Battle of Senta in Serbia in 1697. Designed by József Róna 200 years later, it is considered to be the finest equestrian statue in Budapest.
With thousands of years of history, beautiful statues and architecture, Budapest is a city you can explore for weeks and always find something new and fascinating. Perhaps, that might be some other story..
