Castle Hill National Historic Site, Placentia, Newfoundland and Labrador (by Peter Bull)
Last summer, after leaving Cape St. Mary's, we headed to Placentia to check out Castle Hill National Historic Site. The hill has the remnants of English and French fortifications from the 17th and 18th centuries. Many a battle was waged over this strategic piece of high ground. We took in the visitor center first and then headed to the castle. The day was perfect for taking in the easy hiking trails around the hill. We used the headsets available at the visitor's center to learn more about the history as we walked around. Castle Hill is definitely worth the stop if you are in the Placentia Bay area.

Placentia is a town located in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador Canada, It consists of the Argentia Industrial Park and amalgamated communities of Townside, Freshwater, Dunville, and Jerseyside. Placentia has many features that make is a popular tourist attraction in Newfoundland and Labrador. It has a unique lift-bridge that spans the tumultuous tides of 'the gut' (the narrow opening to the harbour). Around Placentia, countless buildings and sites reflect the deep history of the area. There are many archaeological sites (some partially re-constructed), several excellent examples of late-19th century Newfoundland architecture, two museums (O'Reilly House and Castle Hill), and one of the two Marine Atlantic ferry links from Newfoundland to Nova Scotia (via Argentia). It is 130 kilometres from the capital city, St. John's, and is within easy distance of the scenic Cape Shore (including the Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve), and St. Mary's Bay, Conception Bay, and the inner reaches of Placentia Bay. In 2009, Placentia celebrated the opening of the Placentia Bay Cultural Arts Centre with a month of artistic events, including drama productions, art exhibitions (three shows recognizing art from elementary students, high school students, and adults), and musical performances. The town has an established summer stock theatre troupe, Placentia Area Theatre D'Heritage (PATH), which performs historical plays of significance in the Placentia area. The primary production is Faces of Fort Royale, performed at Castle Hill National Historic Site, depicting the lives of the early inhabitants of Placentia under the leadership of Governor De Broullion. They also perform a dinner theatre cabaret set in the 1950s during the Argentia Base heyday, and a ghost walk. The troupe generally consists of post-secondary students under the direction of the province's finest theatre producers.

Marine Atlantic, Placentia Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, North America
Placentia Bay is a body of water on the southeast coast of Newfoundland, Canada. It is formed by Burin Peninsula on the west and Avalon Peninsula on the east. Fishing grounds in the bay were used by native people long before the first European fishermen arrived in the 16th century. For a time, the French controlled the bay. They built their capital at Placentia on the east coast. The British gained Placentia during the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. The town and nearby Castle Hill are national historic sites. English settlement followed in the bay and today the main communities are Burin, Marystown, and Placentia. On 14 August 1941 NS Argentia located in Little Placentia Sound was the site of the Atlantic Conference for the Atlantic Charter, where Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt met face to face for the first time since both took office and the start of World War.

From Renews to Castle Hill, Newfoundland - Canada HD Travel Channel
Renews is a small fishing village on the south coast of Newfoundland. According to legend, the Mayflower anchored here in 1620 to load water and supplies before traveling to Plymouth.
We drive on to Portugal Cove in the south of the peninsula to the wide open space of the tundra.
Between 1500 and 1700 the area around St. Stephen's - Peter's River at the east entrance of St. Mary's Bay was frequently visited by French and Portuguese fishermen.
We drive through a beautiful landscape where the streams are so blue that it looks nearly kitschy. As we can see in the Cataracts Provincial Park, it is because they are black-water Rivers in which the sky is particularly reflected.
We finally reach Castle Hill. Here you have the best panoramic view of Placentia. The place was founded by Basque fishermen in the 16th Century. In the Castle Hill National Historic Site you can see the remains of French and English fortifications from the 17th and 18th centuries.
