In 1877, James Livingston, known as the Flax and Oil King of Canada, decided to build his castle. The elegance was evident on the exterior, but it was the inside that drew the most attention.

The land on which the Baden Hotel is located was purchased by Christoph Kraus from Jacob Beck, the village planner and founder, in 1858. Kraus originally built a frame hotel, which was replaced by the current hotel, in 1874.
The centrally-located Baden Hotel is located on the main street, in the Village of Baden, and is adjacent to the Grand Trunk Railway Station. As a result of their close proximity, the Baden Hotel provided the public a place to wait for the arrival and departure of the trains. The commercial life of the community was centred around the Baden Hotel. As train travel decreased the hotel served as the first bus depot in the village.
The Baden Hotel's location on the village's main street also served to make the hotel the centre of social activities. Band practices, community dances, weddings and meetings were frequently held at the hotel. Baden's politicians often ate here after their meetings and also treated voters after successes on Nomination Day.

Dundurn Castle - Hamilton, Ontario
I hope you enjoy this little peek at one of my favourite places to visit in southern Ontario. Every time I go, I see or learn something new. This Canadian National Historic Site is not really a castle at all. Dundurn Castle was built by Sir Allan Napier MacNab, and completed in 1835 at a cost of $175,000.00. Seventy-two rooms made up its 18,000-square-footage (1,700 square metres) and 42 of them are now open to the public after being restored to what they would have been in 1855. Sir John A. MacDonald, first Prime Minister of Canada, and England's King George VII were among those entertained there.
Some interesting facts from the tour:
-- Dundurn Castle was the first home in the province to have gas lighting and running water. The water was pumped through the house by a young boy who earned $2.00 per month for his service.
-- The Scullery Maid was a young girl of 9 or 10. She washed the dishes from the entire household's seven meals each day. Her wage -- $1.30 per month.
-- Refined sugar was delivered in a solid, paper-wrapped cone. It was shaved or chipped off when needed. The cost of a cone of sugar - $75.00. The cost of a new home - $100.00.
-- Sir Allan MacNab was often accused of treating his servants too well. :)
The Victorian Kitchen Garden was a project undertaken by the City of Hamilton as part of the restoration. This formal garden is walled in Scottish fashion, and has a series of walkways and beds full of fruit, flowers, herbs and vegetables that would have been grown during Sir Allan NacNab's lifetime at Dundurn. The garden is maintained the old fashioned way by hand, and all natural.
Baden, Ontario ????????Why It's So Underrated
Baden Ontario. Baden, in Wilmot Township, is about a fifteen to twenty minute drive from Kitchener, straight down highway eight. This little town is a great place to live with small mom-and-pop joints, some solid near-by golf courses, parks, two elementary schools, a high school, a museum… the list goes on. With Kitchener housing prices on the rise, Baden has seen a spike in their real estate in recent years as demand for this area has continued to grow, and with no great surprise as this really is a beautiful place to live.
Whether you're thinking of Moving to Baden Ontario or lived here your entire life, this applies to you!

If you travel down any of the country or side roads surrounding Baden, you’ll find farm fields and bush for miles. The Nith River is near-by and the small creeks and rivers that flow off the Nith and the farm fields wind their way through and around Baden. It’s perfect for a peaceful, country drive where you can most definitely spot some wildlife. Spongy Lake and Hofstetter Lake are both around the corner and while neither are a place for fishermen, they are both fantastic for bird watching. In town, you can find a few parks and playgrounds sprinkled around including, but not limited to, Sir Adam Beck Community Park and Schneller Park. Schneller is a great place for toddlers with equipment specifically designed for the little tykes. Sir Adam Beck is an eleven acre park in the middle of Baden complete with baseball diamonds, picnic cover, tennis courts, sports fields and a skatepark.

Baden PS - 2018 Grad Song “This Is Me” (Highlights)
June 27, 2018 - BADEN Public School (Wilmot Township, Waterloo Region, ON CAN)
The graduating class of 2018 embraces & celebrates authenticity, uniqueness and diversity as the theme to their graduation ceremony. The song “This Is Me”, from the movie The Greatest Showman, was chosen as this year’s grad song and perfectly aligned with the theme of the night. Under the direction of music teacher, Mrs. Janet Sunga, the Gr. 8’s surprised the audience with a spectacular production of the grad song that included singing, dancing, hockey sticks, live marching drums and acrobatics. It was truly a special moment for the students to share and for their family & friends to witness. Bravo!
