Lisburn City - A Walk Through the City - County Antrim. Check out Lisburn Northern Ireland
A short walk around Lisburn City - only 8 miles southwest from Belfast City Centre - on the River Lagan - well worth a visit.
For people wondering where is Lisburn in Northern Ireland - it's just outside of Belfast - so it is easy to get to, if you have some time to spare to check out the area.
Lisburn is the third largest city in Northern Ireland and that gives it much of importance just like the attention that is always given to Belfast - it is even 8 miles northwest from Belfast's city centre, which means that it is also close for people to reach and check what it has for them.
This city, Lisburn, is situated on River Lagan and thus it forms the boundary between county Antrim and county Down. Lisburn is also part of Belfast Metropolitan Area and it has several touristic attractions or places that people could visit while they are in the city, which include the Irish Linen Museum ( Christ Church Cathedral ( as well as Lisburn Castle Gardens.
During our visit to Lisburn - was not the first time though :-) - we managed to walk down the streets of the city, check those shops and boutiques scattered all around the place, and eventually entering those touristic attractions and landmarks which managed to be the spotlight of Lisburn in general, and for all the shopping lovers out there, Lisburn is also considered one of the biggest shopping destinations in Northern Ireland with Bow Street Mall that occupies over 70 stores.
The Irish Linen Centre and Lisburn Museum started its journey with dealing with the local history regarding Lisburn and the Lagan Valley but it was then integrated with the history of textiles in 1994 when the Irish linen centre opened. This linen centre and museum is worth the visit because it collects and preserves items from the history of both Ireland's linen industry and the Lagan Valley.
In this museum, there are even some galleries to walk through and see those materials which are placed regarding Lisburn's cultural scene that focuses on local personalities, artists, poets, and writers.
In addition to visiting the place to explore more about the history of Lisburn when it comes to this industry, in this place there are also some free guided tours offered as well as those workshops that help the visitors in exploring the history of Irish linen and also a good day out for the school children :-)
Our next stop in Lisburn city was the Christ Church Cathedral. The Christ Church Cathedral was first called and referred to as St. Thomas's Church. This church was previously burnt down and the work which you will find standing today is commenced in 1708 after this incidence. After the reconstruction that took place in 1662, St. Thomas was designated the cathedral church. From that point, Christ Church Cathedral became one of the most important places to visit when it comes to Lisburn city in Northern Ireland.
Moving forward with the rest of our trip, we reached the next stop which we also recommend for all those who would be visiting Lisburn which is the Castle Gardens ( Lisburn Castle Gardens might be one of the most visited places in the city that also carries some ties with history. This place is good for those who want to walk among nature or just sit there relaxing their minds, it is also a perfect destination for those who want to see some of the old statues which might be taking their place in the garden.
The upper section of the garden dates back to the late Victorian times and there are some historical significant features that include the 1677 red sandstone gateway, the Wallace drinking fountain, and a memorable erected in 1891 that honors Lisburn's landlord Sir Richard Wallace.
All these things tell that the gardens is related back to history and that even comes in addition to some of the artifacts which were found in it and which most of them are displayed at the museum in the centre of the city.
Lisburn is filled with places to visit and inspect and in addition to those which we have mentioned and been to, there is also the Island Arts Centre ( the famous Giant's Ring ( and checking those different events which might be only taking place in the city annually, such as the Christmas market for example ( or else checking something like the Foote Farm which is held annually and which allows people to get to the farm on weekends and experience the day there (
Being the third largest city in Northern Ireland should be enough to convince you to come and check this city, but also the attractions will bring you right here.

Lisburn is a city in Northern Ireland. It is 8 mi southwest of Belfast city centre, on the River Lagan, which forms the boundary between County Antrim and County Down. Lisburn is part of the Belfast Metropolitan Area.
Formerly a borough, Lisburn was granted city status in 2002 as part of Queen Elizabeth II's Golden jubilee celebrations. It is the third-largest city in Northern Ireland. Lisburn is one of the constituent cities that make up the Dublin-Belfast corridor region which has a population of just under 3 million.
The north and south divide in Lisburn can be seen either side of the railway line that goes through the centre of the city. North Lisburn is home to many of the residential neighbourhoods, and contains the notable landmarks of the Theipval Barracks, and the Laurelhill Sportszone.
Lisburn is notable for its large number of churches, with 132 churches listed in the Lisburn City Council area. One of two cathedrals in the Church of Ireland Diocese of Connor is in Lisburn, Christ Church Cathedral.
Lisburn railway station was opened on 12 August 1839. The railway remains a popular means of transport between Lisburn and Belfast, with the express trains taking 10–15 minutes to reach Belfast's Great Victoria Street. The Lagan Canal passes through Lisburn. This connected the port of Belfast to Lough Neagh, reaching Lisburn in 1763 (although the full route to Lough Neagh was not complete until 1793). Lisburn has become one of the main towns/cities in Northern Ireland for shopping. Bow Street Mall, on Bow Street, houses over 70 stores, many eateries (including a food court) and a multi-storey car park with over 1000 spaces.

Antrim Castle Gardens - County Antrim, Northern Ireland
Antrim Castle Gardens which is also referred to as Antrim Castle Gardens and Clotworthy House is considered a historic gem which people will never find anywhere else in Northern Ireland; it is the place that was supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund in order to become in the same measure of beauty which we see today.
As much as this location is considered a beautiful green space that one could stroll down to enjoy, it is also considered a historic place which tourists come to visit in order to check the Clotworthy House that is found inside - and which is the reason behind referring to it in the name of the whole place - and at the same time get the chance to visit the Garden Heritage Exhibition in order to know more about the story of Massereene Family.
Antrim Castle, which is located in the same place where the gardens are situated, was also referred to and known as Massereene Castle. The Massereene Castle passed through lots of stages in its development; it was erected in stages between 1613 and 1662, it was destroyed by fire in 1922, and it was finally demolished in the 1970's. In addition to the castle, there was an Italian tower built there in 1887 and a gatehouse which was built in 1818 with twin neo-Tudor towers, with older connecting walls.
People in county Antrim - and in Northern Ireland in general - consider Antrim Castle Gardens a living museum that carries over four centuries of culture and heritage. In these 60-acre gardens, there are some features which you will need to check and which include visiting the Large Parterre, Her Ladyship's Pleasure Garden and Yew Tree Pond. Along the walk in this garden, you will at some point come across the sculpture which is named The Massereene Wolfhound which is considered part of the history of this family that played a great role in bringing this garden to life and giving it the chance to become a historical place until this day.
In order to bring back lots of the things and features which used to make this garden different and take it back to its 17th-century reality, there were lots of things done and a lot of hard work exerted in the major programme that was dedicated to it by the Heritage Lottery Fund that was considered the biggest garden restoration project to be seen in Northern Ireland.
As much as the whole place is mainly about the old restored garden, you will also get the chance to see those new and ornamental gardens during your visit. It is easy to reach this garden and there you will find heritage, you will find education and interpretation, as well as community arts' facilities which you will find them scattered all around Clotworthy House that is part of Antrim Castle Gardens.
There are different events that sometimes take its place in this place and one of these examples is the Christmas event which we even got the chance to attend - it was beautifully different for us as adults as well as for the kids for the different games and other sweets which it managed to serve them ( - we definitely recommend this place for those who are trying to visit a place in county Antrim which will mix between heritage and history as well as the new features and informative things which are all found there.
County Antrim, which is one of the six counties that are found in Northern Ireland, carries several destinations and touristic attractions that people could go to and visit. From the long list that is found out there, we would recommend Bushmills Distillery which is located in Bushmills that is in county Antrim ( Another option is the famous Dark Hedges which is located in Ballymoney in county Antrim as well and which became even more famous after it appeared in the famous Game of Thrones movie series ( Carrickfergus is one destination in county Antrim which we have been to before and which we would recommend as well ( and we would also recommend Carnfunnock Park which is one of the things that we believe should be done in county Antrim - especially if you have kids and want them to enjoy the time along with you - (
There are actually lots of things and places in county Antrim and the suggestions always depend on the place you are residing in and how far you will be from all these different places; always search our channel according to your location and you will definitely find lots of places on it which you could visit and lots of things which you could actually do when it comes to Northern Ireland.
Our trip to Antrim Castle Gardens was all worth it, we enjoyed the mix of history and modernity and that is exactly why we are recommending the place to you all.

Belfast yen There is another specialty. The building is surrounded by beautiful gardens is the Belfast Castle. Size is not large, but it is quite tasteful and Adam. In the 1860s the castle was first built interior is also quite gorgeous to have been used primarily as a banquet room of the lord and the aristocracy. Honeymoon suite for newlyweds is ahead of the wedding dress and the traditional form of marriage beds inside the castle has gotta reproduce. Belfast Castle gotta open to the public since the 1920s, close to the near 100 years and has been the most beloved wedding venues in Belfast. I wish the newlyweds happiness of numerous liver through here so far. Holding a souvenir shop located in the castle basement. Bringing a sense of something different from the entrance. Various lighting, handicrafts, painting, model toys, etc. strutting pretty appearance, is attracting attention. You can not fall into the pride of the Belfast million. It sells a variety of antiques kind. Maybe these days it's a lot of bags sold Titanic-related memorabilia. Prints, models, badges, etc. are all well get out. But the figure of the emperor golf is something wrong. The pigtails sticking plaster attached to the face of Tiger Woods. Direct from the store interior is? Yes. I will direct. Direct creates, directly and decorate it to me. Tiger Woods of the world, the sharp tip of the brush even early realist painter Anything more you can get around.

Donegall Place & Royal Avenue; Main Shopping Area in Belfast
Are you searching for the places where you are supposed to shop in while being in Belfast? Donegall Place and Royal Avenue are those where the international brands and shops are located and where you will most probably find all what you are searching for.
Donegall Place is the main shopping street in Belfast that runs from the north side of Donegall Square which is located in the centre of Belfast city. The name of the street or the square is taken from the Donegall family and in this area you will most probably find all the services which you might be searching for and which include the need for a bank for example.
In every single city out there in the world, there will be a specific street or area where one will get the chance to do some shopping and where the most well known brands are located, this of course comes in addition to some of the big centers and malls which might be scattered in other parts of the city.
When it comes to Belfast, Northern Ireland, and the places where one could do some shopping, Donegall Place and Royal Avenue will be the right answer. Both streets are right next to one another and the best thing about them both is that they are situated in the centre of the city so close to some of the most popular attractions that are found in Belfast.
Royal Avenue is another shopping street in Belfast that is located in the Cathedral Quarter ( and it has been recently identified with the more recent Smithfield and Union Quarter. Royal Avenue street might be even considered more famous when it comes to shopping than the Donegall Place because it has been the city's principle shopping thoroughfare since its establishment in 1881.
Heading to any of these two different streets in Belfast for shopping might be the first thing to come to your mind, but we have to say that they also stand as historical attractions that one might visit in this city. Royal Avenue street for example used to host the Grand Central Hotel which is the most prestigious hotel in Belfast which welcomed many famous figures back in time, such as King Leopold III of Belgium, Sir Winston Churchill, The Beatles and the Rolling Stones (
Royal Avenue begins from the Donegall Place junction with Castle Place and Castle Street, the road runs north to the North Street crossing where the former Bank of Ireland stands then it angles northeast to the Donegall Street intersection continuing in a northeasterly direction as York Street. This brings us to one important conclusion at the end which is that both streets are next to one another and walking through one will eventually take you to the other.
Royal Avenue is more historical than the Donegall Place and it even had its effects back during the time of the Troubles since it was targeted by the Provisional IRA due to its economic importance as a commercial zone and the presence of the British Army military barracks.
From the top attractions of Belfast which are located close to Donegall Place and the Royal Avenue street which you could visit, you will be close to St. Anne's Cathedral ( City Hall is very close to the Donegall Place since it is considered in the centre of the city ( and the Commercial Court which is situated in the Cathedral Quarter (
Walking the streets of Belfast might bring you to some attractions which you didn't even think about and they might not be all related to historical buildings and museums, but they might be related to old areas, walls, and it could be even about graffiti art ( such as those which are found in the Cathedral Quarter (
These two streets might be the most famous ones when it comes to Belfast shopping streets but in this city you will also find some important and famous shopping malls and centres that might not be as historical as those streets. The most famous shopping malls in Belfast are the CastleCourt Shopping Centre and Victoria Square and these come directly after the Donegall Place and Royal Avenue streets - another option you could go for if you are searching for a shopping place and you don't care about looking deeper into the history of the city itself.
If you don't want to do any shopping while you are visiting Belfast and touring the city, you could still have a walk through these two important streets because they might provide you with some good history and they will also give you the chance to know more about the atmosphere related to the centre of the city, keeping in mind that lots of attractions are located very close to these two different streets.
