Lorca Castle (Spanish: Castillo de Lorca) in Lorca, Murcia, Spain, is a fortress of medieval origin constructed between the 9th and 15th centuries. It consists of a series of defensive structures that, during the Middle Ages, made the town and the fortress an impregnable point in the southeast part of the Iberian Peninsula. Lorca Castle was a key strategic point of contention between Christians and Muslims during the Reconquista. It is listed as a Site of Cultural Interest. It is 640 m long and 120 m wide, and one of the largest castles in Spain.

Archaeological excavations have revealed that the site of the castle has been inhabited since Neolithic times. There were archaeological excavations conducted between 1999 and 2011, in conjunction with other excavations conducted in the centre of the town of Lorca. The excavations revealed the existence of an Argaric town that extended from the castle to the actual site of the current town. The excavations revealed funerary sites, homes, and a wall.

It has not been determined exactly when a castle or fortress was first built on the hill. The first written documentation referring to a castle at Lorca is of Muslim origin, which in the 9th century, indicates that the city of Lurqa was an important town in the area ruled by Theudimer (Tudmir), who ruled seven cities in southeastern Spain, mentioned in the Treaty of Orihuela that was preserved by the Andalusian historian Ibn Adarí in the thirteenth century: Orihuela, Valentila (possibly an equivalent for Valencia), Alicante, Mula, Bigastro, Eyya (probably Ojós), and Lorca.

During Muslim rule, Lorca Castle was an impregnable fortress and its interior was divided into two sections by the Espaldón Wall. In the western part, there was an area used to protect livestock and grain in times of danger. The eastern part had a neighbourhood called the barrio de Alcalá.

Lorca was conquered by the Castilian Infante Don Alfonso, the future Alfonso X, in 1244, and the fortress became a key defensive point against the Kingdom of Granada. For 250 years, Lorca Castle was a watchpoint on the border between the Christian kingdom of Murcia and the Muslim state of Granada.

Lorca Taller del Tiempo (“Lorca Time Workshop”) is a company that uses the castle as a theme park for medieval re-enactments and includes a touristic train that travels throughout the city, departing from the Visitor Centre (formerly the Convent of La Merced).

Lorca is a municipality and city in the autonomous community of Murcia in southeastern Spain, 58 kilometres southwest of the city of Murcia.Lorca is the municipality with the second-largest surface area (after Cáceres) in Spain with 1,675.21 km2 (646.80 sq mi). The city is home to Lorca Castle and the Collegiate church dedicated to St. Patrick.

The municipality of Lorca extends to the Mediterranean. There are many beaches in its 8 km (5 mi) litoral stretch of the coast line surrounded by hills with coves with sparse to dense vegetation. Some of the popular beaches are: The Calnegre, a sand beach, 1200 m long and 20 m wide, is peaceful with the calm sea; Cala Leña, part of the Blana Cove with backdrop of hills covered with good vegetation and facing crystal clear sea water; El Ciscar, a gravel beach surrounded by low hills; El Muerto beach with volcanic black sand and rock faces; La Galera gravel beach in the backdrop of a cove and rock cliffs covered by vegetation; Los Hierros, a gravel beach; Larga beach, a 500 m wide gravel beach; and La Junquera, a small gravely beach with rocky landforms

The Lorca Castle, which overlooks the city of Lorca from a strategic location, and is thus distinctly visible from a distance, was built by the Moorish inhabitants during the 13th century. The Plaza de España (Spanish Square) is one of the most emblematic monuments of the city, located in the heart of Lorca's historical centre. Containing the Collegiate San Patricio and the Chambers of the Collegiate members, the Casa del Corregidor and Posito, the granary of the 16th century, amongst others. The Collegiate Church of San Patricio is a Renaissance-style building situated on the Plaza de España. The city has many museums of which the Museo de Arqueologico Municipal maintained by the Plaza de Juan Moreno is popular. There is also an embroidery museum. The city hall has many paintings of battles that were fought in and around Lorca. Paintings of local artists are also on display here. The Archaeological Museum of Lorca is located in the renovated House of Salazar which had been built in the early seventeenth century. La Casa de Guevara is one of the ancient baroque buildings built between 16th and 18th centuries by the Guevara family. Another historical monument is the Iglesia de San Mateo, which has an impressive vaulted interior.

A Roman Milepost of 10 BC of Emperor Augustus period over which a statue of San Vincente erected in the 15th century is an important landmark on the Columnia Milenaria. It is located on the located on the Calle de la Corredera

GASTRONOMÍA
La huerta de Lorca es uno de los grandes vergeles del sureste peninsular. Cada primavera se puebla de infinidad de hortalizas, frutas y verduras que junto al cerdo, son la base gastronómica de esta rica zona del municipio. Destacan los guisos, como la olla fresca, la olla podrida y el potaje. En primavera suele cocinarse la olla gitana. Si cae alguna lluvia inmediatamente aparecen los caracoles y se cocinan con tomate, con salsa picante, y con los arroces. Ensaladas: remojón, pipirrana y la ensalada campesina. Destacan también la fritá, el pisto y las empanadillas lorquinas, el gazpacho lorquino; la torta de pimiento molío con sardinas y los crespillos, aperitivo único y exclusivo de Lorca.
Gozan de reconocida fama los arroces de Lorca, en especial el arroz y pavo, así como las pelotas (albóndigas), exquisito plato plenamente huertano, y fundamental en las bodas y otras celebraciones.

FIESTAS -- SEMANA SANTA
Numerosas fiestas tienen lugar a lo largo del año en Lorca, desde carnaval, fiestas en honor a la patrona de la ciudad Santa María La Real de las Huertas el 8 de septiembre, moros y cristianos el 23 de noviembre con motivo de la celebración de San Clemente, patrón de la ciudad, y un largo etcétera. Destaca de manera singular la Semana Santa de Lorca, declarada Fiesta de Interés Turístico Internacional. Durante la Semana Santa se celebran las procesiones y los desfiles bíblico-pasionales, donde personajes del Antiguo y Nuevo Testamento desfilan a pie, a caballo o sobre carros y carrozas alegóricas, ataviados con ropajes y túnicas bordados en seda y oro, algunas de ellas declaradas Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC), máxima distinción que puede recibir una obra de arte, siendo los únicos textiles con este galardón en todo el mundo.

Lorca is a municipality and city in the autonomous community of Murcia in southeastern Spain, 58 kilometres southwest of the city of Murcia. It had a population of 92,694 in 2010, up from the 2001 census total of 77,477. Lorca is the municipality with the second-largest surface area (after Cáceres) in Spain with 1,675.21 km2 (646.80 sq mi). The city is home to Lorca Castle and the Collegiate church dedicated to St. Patrick.

In the Middle Ages Lorca was the frontier town between Christian and Muslim Spain. Even earlier to that during the Roman period it was ancient Ilura or Heliocroca of the Romans. The city was seriously damaged by a magnitude 5.1 earthquake on 11 May 2011, killing at least nine people. Due to shallow hypocenter, the earthquake was much more destructive than usual for earthquakes with similar magnitude.

Archaeological excavations in the Lorca area have revealed that it has been inhabited continuously since Neolithic times, 5,500 years ago. The earliest permanent settlement is in the Guadalentín River valley, likely because of its presence of water sources, mineral resources, and lying along a natural communication route in Andalusia. On the hillside below the castle and the town archaeological digs have revealed the remains of an important population of the El Argar culture during the Bronze Age.

The town is situated at an elevation of 370 metres (1,200 ft) in eastern Spain between Granada and Murcia. It was part of the hura of Tidmir in the Muslim period when it became well known for its fertile soil and subsoil, and for its strategic location. It is situated on the southern slopes of the Siera del Cano mountains. The Guadalentín River flows through the town

Its history dates back to the Islamic period when it was built between 8th and 12th centuries; some remnants of which are still seen in the form of water systems in the older part of the castle. The Alfonsí Tower is of a rectangular shape which is built in the castle. The castle has a polygonal floor plan. The tower has three sections. Gothic vaulted ceilings are seen in its three sections.

The Collegiate Church of San Patricio is a Renaissance-style building situated on the Plaza de España. It was declared a National Historic-Artistic site by decree of January 27, 1941. The Collegiate is the only one in Spain which is under the patronage of St. Patrick. The dedication to the Irish saint, has its origins in the Battle of Los Alporchones, fought on March 17, 1452 (St. Patrick's Day) against people of the city of Granada.

The Archaeological Museum of Lorca is located in the renovated House of Salazar which had been built in the early seventeenth century. The museum is a store house of all the archaeological antiquaries found during excavations in several historical areas of Lorca and from other regions in Spain.

Baza é uma cidade situada no noroeste da província de Granada, o seu nome provem de Basti, nome que os Romanos deram à cidade. por aqui passaram também os Visigodos e os Cartagineses, depois vieram os Árabes que lhe deram o nome de Medina Bastha.
