Sabie – Bridal Veil Falls – Lonecreek Falls – Horseshoe Falls/ Panorama Route Day 1 of 4
Time stamps of each waterfall we checked out.
4:09 View of Sabie River Camp
5:24 Bridal Veil Falls
8:52 Lonecreek Falls
9:53 Horseshoe Falls
We were only in Sabie for a long weekend and packed in as much as we could each day, but still didn’t get to see everything there was to see.
We camped at the picturesque Sabie River Camp, on the Sabie river, only arriving and setting up camp in the dark.
In the morning we had breakfast at The wild Fig Tree in Sabie to fuel us for a day of waterfalls.
Our first waterfall was Bridal Veil Falls, just outside of Sabie. It’s a lovely walk up the footpath to the 146-meter waterfall, and the footpath leads all the way round behind the waterfall, and with the low hanging clouds it lived up to its name, showing off its veil.
Next up was Lone Creek Falls, which was a much shorter walk to the 70-meter falls, which drops into a crystal-clear shallow pool at the bottom. The falls are part of the Blyde river watercourse, which we see more of in the following days.
The last falls of the day was Horseshoe falls, named for the rock formation forcing the water into two falls forming a horseshoe shape. These unusual falls have been declared a national monument.
We had coffee at The Woodsman Pub and Restaurant in Sabie, before heading back to our campsite for a dip in the heated swimming pool.

Hermits Wood Campsite – Garden Castle Nature Reserve // South Africa Safari Day 3 of 25
We leave buttresses of Golden Gate Highlands National Park, the most northerly part of the Maloti-Drakensberg World heritage site, heading south to the most southerly campsite – Hermits Wood Campsite in the Garden Castle Nature Reserve (Mkhomazi Wilderness area).
The 36 km drive into the mountains from Underberg takes about an hour and is magnificent, even passing through Drakensberg Gardens Resort golf course! The gates close at 18h00 in winter and 19h00 in summer.
There’s no electricity at the campsite, but the view of the #Drakensberg is stunning and well worth it.
After setting up camp, we hit the rock pools – Hippo Pools – until sunset, found another puddle for the #jeep and had marshmallows over the fire.

God's window+Three Rondavels+Wonderview - Panorama Route
With magnificent views, canyons, rock formations and waterfalls, God's Window is truly an area of breathtaking scenic splendour. It is no wonder that Mpumalanga is known as Paradise Country.
Gods Window is so called for the panoramic view of the Lowveld more than 900 m down into lush indigenous forest clad ravine. The majestic cliffs plunge over 700 meters to the Lowveld and the private game reserves which have made the area one of South Africa's main wildlife destinations. God's Window is a small part of a 250km long earthwork of sheer cliffs and extravagant beauty. One can observe the hills and forests as far as the eye can see. In fact, it seems as if one can see forever!
Exactly as they sound, the Three Rondavels are three round mountain tops with slightly pointed tops, very similar to the traditional round or oval African homesteads made with local materials called rondavels. They are sometimes also called the Three Sisters (although this confuses them with a similar threesome visible from the N1 in the Free State lower down in the country).
Wonder View is the highest viewpoint on the Panorama Route and offers a 180 degree view over the Lowveld. The drop down to the Lowveld from the Panorama Route is approximately 900 m. On a clear day it is possible to see the Kruger National Park and the Lebombo mountain range in the distance.
Blyde River Canyon, Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve, Mpumalanga, Drakensberg, South Africa, Africa
The Blyde River Canyon is a significant natural feature of South Africa, located in Mpumalanga, and forming the northern part of the Drakensberg escarpment. It is 16 miles (26 km) in length and is, on average, around 2,500 feet (762 m) deep. The Blyderivierpoort Dam, when full, is at an altitude of 665m (2182 feet). The Canyon consists mostly of red sandstone. The highest point of the canyon, Mariepskop, is 6,378 feet (1,944 m) feet above sea level, whilst its lowest point where the river leaves the canyon is slightly less than 1,840 feet (561 m) above sea level. This means that by some measure the Canyon is over 4,500 feet (1,372 m) deep. Blyde means glad or happy in Dutch, a name derived from a voortrekkers' expedition. The 'happy river' was thus named in 1844, when Hendrik Potgieter and others returned safely from Delagoa Bay to the rest of their party of trekkers who had considered them dead. While still under this misapprehension they had named the nearby river where they had been encamped, Treurrivier, or 'mourning river'. The Blyde River canyon supports large diversity of life, including numerous fish and antelope species as well as Hippos and Crocodiles, and every primate species that may be seen in South Africa (including both Greater and Lesser Bush Babies, Vervet Monkeys and Samango Monkeys). The diversity of birdlife is similarly high, including the beautiful and much sought Narina Trogon as well as species such as the Cape Vulture, Black Eagle, Crowned Eagle, African Fish Eagle, Gymnogene, Jackal Buzzard, Whitebacked Vulture, Bald Ibis, African Finfoot, Knysna Lourie, Purple-crested Lourie, Gurney's Sugarbird, Malachite Sunbird, Cinnamon Dove, Emerald Cuckoo, Red-backed Mannikin, Golden-tailed Woodpecker, Olive Bush Shrike, Green Twinspot, Taita Falcons (very rarely sighted, a breeding pair lives in the nearby Abel Erasmus Pass), Cape Eagle Owl, White-faced Owl, Wood Owl, Peregrine Falcon, Black-breasted Snake Eagle, Wahlberg's Eagle, Long-crested Eagle, Jackal Buzzard, Lanner Falcon, Red-breasted Sparrowhawk, Rock Kestrel and others. At 200 metres (660 ft), the Kadishi Tufa waterfall is the second tallest tufa waterfall on earth. A tufa waterfall is formed when water running over dolomite rock absorbs calcium, and deposits rock formations more rapidly than they erode the surrounding rock. In the case of the Kadishi Tufa fall, the formation that has been produced strikingly resembles a face which is crying profusely, and is thus sometimes known as 'the weeping face of nature'. The Canyon and the surrounding Drakensberg escarpment is a very popular tourist region with a well-developed tourism industry supported by good public infrastructure.
