The Story of Castle Rushen: One of Europe's best-preserved Medieval Castles
Castle Rushen on the Isle of Man is one of the best preserved medieval castles anywhere in Europe.
It was started by the last of the Manx Viking Kings in the 13th century and since then it has witnessed extraordinary events and been lived in by some extraordinary people.
Presenter Charles Guard discovers its history, learns how it worked as a defensive building and tells the story of some of its more colourful characters.

Castle Rushen is the best example in the British Isles of a medieval castle. Believed to be built around 1200, the Castle served as a residence of the last Norse King of Man, who died in 1266. Part of the Castle was destroyed in a siege by Robert the Bruce in 1313, but was rebuilt by Sir Williamde Montacute in around 1344. In the clock room, formerly used as the castle chapel, lies a clock presented by Queen Elizabeth I in 1597, while she held the island in trust pending a dispute. The clock is of simple construction with only one hand, but still keeps very good time.

SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go visit the historic Peel Castle which is a castle in Peel on the Isle of Man, originally constructed by Vikings. The castle stands on St Patrick's Isle which is connected to the town by a causeway. It is now owned by Manx National Heritage and is open to visitors during the summer.
The castle was built in the 11th century by the Vikings, under the rule of King Magnus Barefoot. While there were older stone Celtic monastic buildings on the island, the first Viking fortifications were built of wood. The prominent round tower was originally part of the Celtic monastery, but has had battlements added at a later date. In the early 14th century, the majority of the walls and towers were built primarily from local red sandstone, which is found abundantly in the area. After the rule of the Vikings, the castle continued to be used by the Church due to the cathedral built there – the see of the diocese of Sodor and Man – but was eventually abandoned in the 18th century.

In September 2017 Historic England gave a grant for emergency roofing works and stonework repairs. Alison Hobbs talks about the castle, its restoration and how Historic England have helped.

The Isle of Man is home to picturesque countryside, fascinating history and some gorgeous wildlife.
Greg got to share his love of history, exploring both Peel and Rushen Castle as well as riding not just on his beloved steam trains but also on the only electric mountain railway tram on the British Isles. While Greg obsessed over his historic railways, Felicity found something more to her taste at The Sound, where wild seals live on the rocks beneath and around The Calf of Man Island.
Only once did they feel the need to escape - from an escape room at Exit Strategy!
Overall the Isle of Man made for a fun filled adventure which we hope you enjoy.

Exploring Castle Acre Castle In The Heart Of Norfolk England Part 1
ABANDONED CITY CAMO CREW EXPLORE
Castle Acre Castle and town walls are a set of ruined medieval defences built in the village of Castle Acre, Norfolk. The castle was built soon after the Norman Conquest by William de Warenne, the Earl of Surrey, at the intersection of the River Nar and the Peddars Way. William constructed a motte-and-bailey castle during the 1070s, protected by large earthwork ramparts, with a large country house in the centre of the motte. Soon after, a small community of Cluniac monks were given the castle's chapel in the outer bailey; under William, the second earl, the order was given land and estates to establish Castle Acre Priory alongside the castle. A deer park was created nearby for hunting.
After civil war broke out in England in 1135, the third earl, also called William, set about improving the defences of the castle. He began to build a tall keep on top of the motte, reinforcing the surrounding earthworks with stone walls. A planned settlement was established alongside the castle, surrounded by its own earthworks and walls, and the Peddars Way was redirected to pass by the castle, town and priory, all important symbols of the de Warennes' power in the region. Hamelin de Warenne acquired the castle through marriage and curtailed the building work on the keep around 1165, but completed the construction of three large stone gatehouses in the castle and town. One of these, the town's bailey gate, still survives intact.
The de Warennes continued to hold the castle until 1347, when it was inherited by Richard Fitzalan, the Earl of Arundel. By 1397 the fortifications were in ruins and, despite restoration work by Sir Edward Coke at the start of the 17th century, the decline continued until the 20th century. In 1971, Thomas Coke, the Earl of Leicester, placed the castle into the guardianship of the state. In the 21st century, it is managed by English Heritage and open to visitors. Historic England consider the castle's huge defensive earthworks to be among the finest surviving in England.
