Appin and Castle Stalker Cycle Path Argyll August 2017
Pictures taken during a walk along a section of the cycle path between Oban and Fort William, in Scotland, in August 2017. This is just a short section of just over a mile in length at Appin, by Castle Stalker. There is quite a lot to see along this section with the castle, Linnhe Marina and the Isle of Shauna. Its on an old rail track bed, so its quite nice and flat, and well paved, so good for all ages whether walking or cycling.
Castle Stalker Loch Laich Appin
Castle Stalker on Loch Laich, an inlet off Loch Linnhe in Appin, is believed to have been built much in it's present form around 1446 by Lord of Lorn, Sir John Stewart. Now owned by the Stewart Allward family, we believe tours are available. What we do know for sure, is that the views are spectacular, and the Castle Stalker View Cafe & Gift Shop, as well as excellent food, has an envious location with panoramic views of Castle Stalker and Loch Linnhe. Monty Python fans may recognise it as Castle Aaaargh from the cult classic film Monty Python and the The Holy Grail.
Castle Stalker Cine-Vlog 005
Castle Stalker Cine-Vlog 005 is the cinematic section from my Vlog How to film with a DJI Mavic Pro - Vlog 014 which you can view here:
In this episode I film Castle Stalker – in the Gaelic, Stalcaire, meaning Hunter or Falconer – is believed originally to have been the site of a Fortalice (a small fortified building) belonging to the MacDougalls when they were Lords of Lorn, and built around 1320. The MacDougalls lost their title after their defeat by King Bruce at Brander Pass in 1308 but regained it for a period after 1328. In about 1388 the Lordship of Lorn passed to the Stewart's, the lands including Castle Stalker.

Castle Stalker Loch Laich Argyll Scotland
Tour Scotland travel video of Castle Stalker on a tidal islet on Loch Laich on ancestry visit to Argyll. The original castle was a small fort, built around 1320 by Clan MacDougall who were then Lords of Lorn. Around 1388 the Stewarts took over the Lordship of Lorn, and it is believed that they built the castle in its present form around the 1440s. The Stewart's relative King James IV of Scotland visited the castle, and a drunken bet around 1620 resulted in the castle passing to Clan Campbell. After changing hands between these clans a couple of times, the Campbells finally abandoned the castle in about 1840, when it lost its roof. In 1908 the castle was bought by Charles Stewart of Achara, who carried out basic conservation work. While most castle scenes in the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail were filmed in and around Doune Castle, Castle Stalker appears in the final scene as The Castle of Aaaaarrrrrrggghhh . First the castle is seen from a distance; next, a French castle guard, John Cleese, taunts King Arthur, Graham Chapman, in a French accent from its battlements; finally, a massive attack is launched against the castle, after which police officers who were investigating the death of a historian earlier in the film arrive and are in the process of arresting Arthur and the other knights for killing him when one officer places his hand over the camera's lens cap and ends the film's visuals. The castle also makes a brief appearance in the film Highlander: Endgame. Castle Stalker is the inspiration for Castle Keep in the children's book, The Boggart.
Scottish castle lake, Castle Stalker
Castle Stalker, Loch Laich, an inlet off Loch Linnhe, Scotland.
Castle Stalker (Scottish Gaelic: Caisteal an Stalcaire) is a four-storey tower house or keep picturesquely set on a tidal islet on Loch Laich, an inlet off Loch Linnhe. It is located about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) north east of Port Appin, Argyll, Scotland, and is visible from the A828 road around mid-way between Oban and Glen Coe. The islet is accessible (with difficulty) from the shore at low tide. The name Stalker comes from the Gaelic Stalcaire, meaning hunter or falconer, and should therefore be pronounced stal-ker, with the l sounded, not as in the pronunciation of the English word stocker and some L-dropping accents' pronunciation of stalker. In recent times the castle was brought to fame by the Monty Python team, appearing in their film Monty Python and the Holy Grail. It also appeared in the film Highlander: Endgame.

Castle Stalker Argyll March 2013
Pics taken at Castle Stalker, Appin, Argyll in March 2013. It was quite a crisp day with clear blue skies, so quite pretty. Nice to see the geese as well. Although the castle is on a small island, it is reachable by foot on a low spring tide, although with the need for wellies.
