Paderne Castle Near Albufeira was built in the 12 century by Berbers. The Castle is believed to be one of seven castles represented on the coat of arms of the Portuguese National Flag. Built from Sandstone and Taipa. The castle is any easy day trip from Albufeira and is on a high hilltop with nice country views. Open on a Wednesday for visitors.
We stop in the town of Paderne to visit the towns graveyard with impressive mausoleum architecture.

Sesimbra Castle - Wonderful Medieval Castle - Sesimbra, Portugal
In one of the most beautiful places on the outskirts of Lisbon stands Sesimbra Castle. With a view of the town’s incredible bay, it was built at a time that pre-dates the founding of the Portuguese nation, even though the walls you see when you visit date from 1200.
Constructed by King Sancho I in the Romanesque style, it made use of the previous Moorish fortifications, from which it gained its name in the region as the “Castle of the Moors”.
The view from it of the amazing landscape of the region, and in particular the Tróia peninsula, Tejo and Sado river estuaries and the impressive Cape Espichel, is unique. In an excellent state of preservation and with original elements still standing – including the church of Nossa Senhora do Castelo, built in 1160 – this imposing monument to the history of Portugal is well worth a visit.

Best Christmas Village In A Portuguese Medieval Castle
Óbidos in Portugal is well known for the Best Christmas Village set inside Medieval Castle walls. Vila Natal 2018 had an additional 80's theme with a discotheque set up for the kids and Adults to dance. Our little toddler Story loved the dance floor and we struggled to get her off it!
We ate Roasted chestnuts by the castle all decorated for Xmas and watched a bubble show that Story loved.
Later in the evening at sunset we took a ride in the Roda Gigante (Giant Ferris Wheel) and it gave us a fantastic view over Óbidos as the sun glowed orange.
As the blue of dusk crept in we went to see the beautiful lights illuminate the medieval castle walls and backstreets.

Castle of Silves Algarve
In the town of Silves in the Algarve, Southern Portugal is the Silves Castle. It was built over the centuries between the 8th and 13th and is a great example of Moorish architecture. There is more to be discovered as yet and excavation is still going on with more early buildings being discovered just outside the castle walls.

O Castelo de Paderne é um hisn, pequena fortificação rural, fundado pelos almóadas na 2ª metade do século XII. Na construção das suas muralhas, que envolvem uma área com cerca de 1 hectare a que atualmente se acede por um único portão, foi exclusivamente utilizado um processo construtivo já esquecido, a taipa militar: amassaduras de terra local acrescidas de inertes e estabilizadas com cal aérea, que foram compactadas, entre taipais, por apisoamento. Uma vez expostos a prolongada carbonatação, os blocos assim obtidos adquiriam a resistência da pedra com que chegaram aos nossos dias.
O dispositivo defensivo foi dotado de uma torre albarrã com planta quadrangular, que se conserva ainda com uma altura superior a 9 m.
No interior do castelo, as intervenções arqueológicas exumaram estruturas habitacionais, demonstrando que, ao abrigo das muralhas, o espaço foi totalmente urbanizado com ruas estreitas mas de traçado ortogonal, percorridas por um complexo sistema de esgotos que conduziam as águas residuais para o exterior do recinto fortificado. As ruas formavam quarteirões, com uma densidade de ocupação própria dos contextos urbanos da época islâmica, com caraterísticas habitações de pátio central descoberto ao qual se acedia desde todas as salas.
Após a conquista cristã do Algarve instalou-se no castelo uma nova população, que adaptou ou alterou, com conceitos distintos, o modelo doméstico inicial. Duas cisternas dão testemunho dos dois principais momentos de ocupação do castelo - o islâmico e o cristão.
The Paderne Castle is a Hisn, small rural fortification, founded by the Almohad in the 2nd half of the twelfth century.
The defensive system was equipped with a barbican tower with quadrangular, which still retains with a height of 9 m.
Inside the castle, the archaeological excavations exhumed housing structures, demonstrating that, under the walls, the space was completely urbanized with narrow streets but orthogonal layout, covered by a complex system of drains that lead waste water to the outside of the enclosure fortified. The streets formed blocks, with a specific density of occupation of urban contexts of the Islamic era, with central courtyard housing characteristics discovered which was acceded from all rooms.
After the Christian conquest of the Algarve settled in the castle a new population, who adapted or changed with different concepts, the initial domestic model. Two cisterns give testimony of the two main castle occupancy times - Islamic and Christian.

Silves is a municipality in the Portuguese Algarve of southern Portugal. The population in 2011 was 37,126, in an area of 680.06 km². The urbanized area includes approximately 11,000 inhabitants. Silves is the former capital of the Algarve and is of great historical importance. The region of Silves has been inhabited since the Palaeolithic, as attested by archaeological remains, including several menhirs. The river Arade, which was navigable in historical times, linked the hinterland to the open ocean and allowed the transport of produce and commerce. The town of Silves (Cilpes) was possibly founded during the times of Roman domination, when the region was part of the Lusitania province.
After 713, when the Moors invaded Iberia, Silves became part of the Umayyad Emirate of Córdoba under the Arabic name of Shilb (شلب). In the 10th century it was one of the most important towns of western Al-Andalus. Silves became an independent taifa in 1027 under the rule of Ibn Mozaine and his son, who was dethroned in 1051 by al-Mu'tadid, the governor of Seville. al-Mu'tamid ibn 'Abbad, the son of al-Mu'tadid and a famous poet, ruled the taifa of Silves until 1091. After the Almoravid conquest the town became Almohad in 1156. In 1189 King Sancho I of Portugal conquered the town with the aid of Northern European crusaders, but lost it again to the Almohads. Periodic raiding expeditions were sent from Al-Andalus to ravage the Iberian Christian kingdoms, bringing back booty and slaves. The governor of Córdoba attacked Silves in 1191, and took 3,000 Christian slaves. Again under Muslim rule, the city would then prosper to the point of being called the Baghdad of the West. The town was finally taken from the last Muslim king Ibn Afan by Paio Peres Correia, Grand-Master of the Order of Santiago in 1242, after the Alentejo and most of the coast had already fallen in 1238. The great mosque was changed into Silves Cathedral (Sé Catedral). Silves declined in importance thereafter and was eclipsed in the region by Faro during the colonial period. In 1491, the town was given to queen Leonora by King João. Parts of the Almohad town wall, constructed from poured concrete, have been preserved, as well as the Almedina-gate (Porta de Loulé). Other sights include the Santa Misericórdia Church with a fine door in Manueline style (the main body of the church was built in 1727-28); a museum for cork and the production of bottle corks in a defunct factory which is now also a centre for cultural events called Fábrica do Inglês (The Englishman's Factory); and the municipal museum (Museu Municipal de Arqueologia) with findings from the palaeolithic onwards. The town is situated on a hill above the Arade River. Silves Castle (Castelo dos Mouros, Moorish Castle) is located on the top of the hill. It occupies ca. 12,000m². Archaeological excavations have shown that the oldest buildings date back to the 8th century, the stratigraphy is almost 6m deep and contains Iron Age remains as well. The walls are made of red sandstone (grés de Silves) with a pisé-core and have been heavily restored in the 1940s. Protruding towers of albarra-type protect the Northern slope. After the Christian conquest, the castle served as the seat of the alcaide-mor (provincial governor) till the middle of the 16th century, afterwards the towers were used as a prison. The municipality is crossed by the Arade River, which was navigable in historical times and was key to the prosperity of the city of Silves. The waters of the river form the dams of Arade and Funcho. The landscape of the municipality is generally hilly. To the south the municipality borders the Atlantic Ocean. Silves is built on top of one of the largest underground aquifers in the south of Portugal, The Querença-Silves Aquifer , and has many orange groves, a fruit introduced by the Moors.

Portugal: Medieval Market and Bow Shooting
After a long day of hiking along the rocky coast and enjoying the beautiful beaches in Lagos we went back to the city to take a look at the Medieval Market but first we made a stop at a asian restaurant. Apparently it was the last day of the market and the end of the weekend so it wasn't that crowded anymore but it was still fun to see the people in customes and it was a great atmosphere. Shooting a bow next to the old castle walls was the highlight of the evening, it was really fun. Looking back, I think we really chose the right time to visit Lagos. Beautiful town at the Algarve. Lagos is one of the most visited cities in the Algarve and Portugal, due to its variety of tourist-friendly beaches, rock formations, bars, restaurants and hotels, renowned for its vibrant summer nightlife and parties. Yet, Lagos is also an historic centre of the Portuguese Age of Discovery.
