Spring at Logothetis Castle - Samos
Lovely Spring on the island of Samos in Greece. High green grass and multiple colours of blooming flowers in March and April seen on castle hill in Pythagorion. Only in early Spring one can see this unique set of blooming flowers, ancient ruins and the castle of Lykourgos Logothetis close to the agean sea. Usually these grasses and most of the flowers will be withered and gone when the season starts in May.

Lykourgos Logothetis ), born Georgios Paplomatas, was a Samian who became the island's leader during the Greek War of Independence.The son of a wealthy shipowner, Logothetis received a good education at Constantinople and then served as an official in the Phanariote administration of Wallachia.His political career experienced great vicissitudes: he served as an elder in his home island, taking the side of the progressive-radical Karmanioloi and the reactionary Kallikantzaroi who represented mostly the traditional land-holding elites.Under Logothetis, the Karmanioloi ruled Samos from 1807 until the intervention of the Ottoman authorities in 1812, which restored the Kallikantzaroi to power and forced the Karmanioloi to flee the island.

PYTHAGORION SAMOS
Pythagorion on Samos is a beautiful city with a lot of tourists and a good base for trips around this 70 km long and 40 km wide island. Along the harbor promenade there are plenty of bars and tavernas, where it is great to sit and watch people and all the boats in the harbor. A quarter further behind it is apparently quieter. Far west in the center you can see Lykourgos Logothetis' house, the castle ruins and the Metamorphic church.
On the hillside of the city is Moni Panagia Spilanis, a monastery with a great view of the city and a 100m deep cave dedicated to Virgin Mary. The remains of the antique theater, which are modernized and in use today, are located in the lia under the abbey.
A little further west on the hillside is Efpalineio Orygma, a 1000 meter long aqueduct built to secure water to the city, in the 5th century BC. Forget the claustrophobia and take a trip into this masterpiece from ancient times. (the sights around the city may come in a separate video clip)
Pythagorion på Samos er en vakker by med stor pågang av turister og et godt utgangspunkt for turer rundt på denne 7 mil lange og 4 mil brede øya. Langs havnepromenaden er det massevis av barer og tavernaer, der det er flott å sitte og se på folk og alle båtene i havna. Et kvartal lengre bak er det påtakelig roligere. Lengst vest i sentrum ser man Lykourgos Logothetis’ hus, borgruinene og Metamorfosiskirken.
I åssiden over byen ligger Moni Panagias Spilanis, et kloster med flott utsikt over byen og en 100 m dyp grotte viet jomfru Maria. I lia under klosteret ligger rester av det antikke teateret, som er modernisert og i bruk også i dag.
Litt lengre vest i åssiden ligger Efpalineio Orygma, en vel 1000 meter lang akvedukt, bygget for å sikre vann til byen, i det 5. århundret f.kr. Glem klaustrofobien og ta en tur inn i dette mesterverket fra oldtiden. (severdighetene rundt byen kommer kanskje i en egen videosnutt)

Der Küstenort Pythagorio (Πυθαγόρειο ) liegt im östlichen Teil der Ebene von Chora etwa 13 km südlich der Stadt Samos. Pythagorio wurde auf den Ruinen der antiken Stadt Samos, einer der bekanntesten Städte der Antike, erbaut. Während der Osmanischen Herrschaft war im Ort lediglich ein Wachposten stationiert. Der Freiheitskämpfer Lykourgos Logothetis ließ 1824 am südwestlichen Ende des Ortes eine Burg errichten. Unter der Herrschaft von Miltiades Aristarchus (1859-1866) begann ab Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts die Wiederbesiedelung auf den antiken Ruinen um den alten Hafen. Das Dorf wurde Tigani (Τηγάνι) genannt. Zu Ehren des Philosophen und Mathematikers Pythagoras wurde der Ort 1955 in Pythagorio umbenannt.
Tales of Samos, 'I see dead people'
We spend over an hour at the graveyard of the Lykourgos Logothetis castle. It puzzled us when we noticed that, although the place looked old, the graves only showed very recent burials, no more than 10 years. We also noticed that many graves seemd to be reused, over and over again. We 'got it' when we found several rooms containing hundreds of boxes with dug-up human remains. Apperently the number of graves id fixed and a first in, first out roulation system is applied for new arrivals. Amazing.
