Places to see in ( Galicia - Spain ) Castle of San Anton
Places to see in ( Galicia - Spain ) Castle of San Anton
The castle of San Antón is a 16th century castle that together with the Castle of Santa Cruz and San Diego Castle formed a strategic network of castles and batteries to defend the city of La Coruña in the autonomous community of Galicia , Spain . It was declared Historical Artistic Monument in 1949 and since 1994 has come to be considered as a Cultural Interest with Monument category. Since its inauguration in 1968, it houses the Archaeological and Historical Museum of La Coruña .
This old fortress was built in what was then a small islet in the middle of the bay of Coruña, where was a small hermitage dedicated to San Anton . Its purpose was to defend the city from attacks from the sea. Its construction began in 1587 , according to an inscription on the front page of the fortress.
During the English attack of 1589 by the English Navy , the castle contributed effectively to the defense of the city, despite being unfinished. After the attack, its construction was continued until the completion of the works in 1590 . From the XVIII century the fortress became a prison, a function that would maintain until its transfer to the City council of Corunna in 1960 .
In the ground floor, old dependencies of the garrison of the castle , pieces of the different periods of the Prehistory and Old History of Galicia are exposed , mainly coming from archaeological excavations in deposits of the province . Special mention should be made of the collection of pre and protohistoric gold and silver jewelery, with such notable pieces as the Leiro Bronze Age helmet, Xanceda's torques, Elviña's treasure or Cícere's chalcolithic goldsmith set (strip choker, diadems and other pieces).

La Coruna Spain P&O cruise E324 - Elizabeth goes cruising again HD
Elizabeth goes cruising Visited La Coruna on the P&O ship Oceana Cruise E324 and Cunard Queen Victoria cruise V621 in 2016. La Coruna is a busy port and one of the most beautiful cities in north-west Spain. The Tower of Hercules is the world's oldest functioning lighthouse and well worth a visit. The Castle of San Anton museum has some very interesting archaeological exhibits, especially the gold pieces, but the real attraction is the castle itself. The views of the harbour are excellent.
