The ruin of a late 18th century castellated house known as ‘Byrne’s Folly’ stands on top of the mound. It was built by Patrick Byrne, a well-known pirate, in 1780 ad.
The motte is built on the site of a pre-Christian fort called Dún Dealgan, meaning ‘The Fort of Dealga’. This site is important in Irish mythology as it is said to be the birthplace of the legendary warrior – Cúchulainn.

When we say CÚ CHULAINN I don't mean the history going back year s ago because nothing ever came threw the spirt box of cu cullinan and never did WHY? I don't no.
But it the people who have taken their own life in the woods surrounding cu chúláin have come threw.

The story goes he was a irish SOILDER who gamble everything he had and went up to cu chúláin and hung himself of the tree that lookes down on the the town of dundalk.
This story does not stop yet many outher lady and men have fallowed the soldiers suitition and taken the rope
