$13 Boat Tour from Cat Ba Island, Vietnam
On New Year's Day we went on a full day boat tour from Cat Ba Island. We were picked up at ~8am from the tour booking office and were driven to the boat docks.
Our boat had approximately 12 people on the tour, which was a really nice size.
1. Our first stop was Monkey Island. We were given 45 minutes to explore the island.
According to a few sources, the monkeys are not native to the island, but were brought there (maybe to drive tourism?)
Take a bag of peanuts or popcorn with you to share with the monkeys. As long as you treat them with respect, the monkeys will be calm and happy to be fed. There is an alpha male that will scare off other monkeys to keep the food for himself, so if you he lar him shouting, he's not shouting at you ;)
There are some beautiful peaks that you can hike here. I highly recommend because the view is spectacular, even if you don't make it to the top.
2. Kayaking. We were given 60 minutes to kayak around and through mountains.
After Monkey Island our boat went to pick up a few kayaks that it hauled to the kayaking location. There were single kayaks and double kayaks available. The kayaks were a bit wet, so I recommend you take an extra change of clothes and put all of your valuables in a waterproof bag.
3. LUNCH. 60 minutes
Upon returning from our kayak adventure, the boat staff had prepared lunch. We ate lunch on the boat, which was a really nice experience. Lunch consisted of rice, chicken, pork, egg, veggies, and tofu. You could purchase a drink if you didn't bring one with you.
4. Swimming and jumping off the boat deck. 60 minutes
5. Boat ride back to docks. 90 minutes.
Go to the boat's deck to really enjoy this part of the ride to the fullest. You'll get the best photos and video from here.
When you pass the floating village, keep an eye out for the dogs. It's so entertaining to see them playing and running around.

Cat Ba Island, Vietnam - Cost of Living - Travel Guide
From June through July, Cat by Island is a very active place during the offseason, it is fairly empty, and living on the island for a month could easily be less than $700, making it an attractive place for an extended visa run. The main strip of Cat Ba Island is full of hotels, restaurants, and shops. Cat Ba town is rather small, so getting around town by foot is easy. For many people, Cat Ba may be too small for long term living since most activities are for tourists visiting for a short time and foreign residents tend to be nomadic, However, it can be a great place for a short-term getaway.
Cat Ba Restaurants:
There’s plenty of fresh seafood around town and a few western options too. There are several karaoke restaurants in the bay. You can catch a taxi boat from the pier that will shuttle you to the restaurants. Like Coffee serves real espresso and cappuccino and it’s a great place to try Vietnamese egg coffee. Oasis is an all-around good restaurant during the day and bar at night. Mona’s Rooftop Is your best choice for vegan options and has a nice rooftop restaurant with a chill environment. They also have nice, sea view rooms with balconies. Yummy Restaurant also has vegetarian options and excellent Vietnamese BBQ. Their Thai style soup with a fresh fruit shake is just $2.64 or with a fresh coconut for $2.86.
Cat Ba Accommodations, where to stay on Cat Ba Island:
It’s best to stay in Cat Ba Town. During high season, it’s best to book a room ahead of time. During the low season, many hotels will offer a good discount for a long-term stay. I booked a simple room with a balcony, off the main strip, for $6 per night and stayed there for two nights while I looked around and found this beachfront room, on the main strip, on the top floor for $270 USD for the month. During the off-season, rooms can be found much cheaper.
Getting Around Cat Ba Island:
From Cat Ba Town, you can easily walk to several nice beaches, a few resorts, and many restaurants.
To explore the island, you’ll want a motorbike. The asking price is about $5-6 per day. I asked around a few places and found one off the main strip for $3.50. per day.
You can get to and from Cat Ba Island and Hanoi as well as other cities by booking a bus/boat/bus combo Prices start around 11 USD. I booked my trip through Good Morning Cat Ba and they included hotel pickup and drop off.
Cat Ba Island Things to Do:
Boat trips to Ha Long Bay are the main attraction of the area. A day cruise will cost about $20 per person and an overnight cruise, will be around $50-100 USD per person. I don’t recommend more than one night on the boat since many of the cruises repeat the same activities at the same places on the third day.
Cat Ba Island Tours, Cat Ba Ventures:
Boat tours will usually include several activities like; sightseeing stops in Halong Bay, kayaking in calm bays with caves to explore, a good lunch prepared on the boat, swimming, snorkeling, a stop at a pearl farm and a visit to Monkey Island.
Ha Long Bay, Vietnam:
Booking a boat tour of Ha Long Bay from Cat Ba island has a couple of advantages. They tend to be cheaper than trips booked from other areas and you also will see parts of the bay that are less traveled by the many cruises departing from the mainland.
There are several nice swimming beaches on Cat Ba within walking distance from the town. The beaches have bars and restaurants that are reasonably priced.
There’s a nice walkway around the peninsula that connects two of the beaches. Catba Sunrise Resort has a bar and restaurant, and sun-shaded beach chairs available for about $3.00.
On the point just outside of town, you’ll find Le Pont Club and Le Pont Bungalow Hostel It’s a great place to enjoy a sunset view over Lan Ha Bay.
Cat Ba National Park:
The national park is a good place for hiking. For a small fee, you can hire a guide at the national park entrance. Another place that’s worth a stop is the Temple at the bay by the North Ferry Terminal. There’s a wooden footbridge about a kilometer long that leads to the temple.
Cat Ba Island Climbing:
Rock Climbing is also popular on the island with Butterfly Valley and Hidden Valley are the most popular. Rock climbing guides are available several places in town.
Cat Ba Island Weather – Best Time to Visit Cat Ba:
In general, for the nicest weather, the best time to visit Cat Ba Island is between April and November.
June through August, the energy level is high as the island gets filled with tourists.
If you want to escape from the crowd and visit Cat Ba Island during its low season. The crowds start dropping off in September. Visiting during October and November is an ideal choice.
Some people find the winter months a little depressing, others enjoy the town when it’s calm ant the beaches are uncrowded.

Many of you guys might have heard about Ha Long Bay but did you know there is a hidden Gem within Ha Long Bay. There is one island along Halong Bay which serve great Seafood, have wonderful views and scenery and also has a beach along the Island.
Welcome to Cat Ba Island, located along the southeastern edge of Lan Ha Bay in Northern Vietnam. Cat Ba Island is the largest island in the Bay and half of the area is covered by national Parks. So if you are a nature lover the island is just the place for you.
We got here through Sliver Sea - 4 Star Cruise and transfer to a smaller boat to fetch us to Cat Ba Island while we stay there there for a night. We tried to explore as much as we can, like going to a Seafood Market, strolling down a beach, drinking at a local Bar, having a massage and many more.

Vietnam Cat Ba Adventures
I have spent 7 days in Cat Ba Island, in Woodstock beach camp, it was awesome, and I met awesome people. So, I would like to share those moments with you guys.
Cat Ba Island Vietnam
Cat Ba Island Vietnam - Cat Ba is the biggest island in the Bay and roughly half of its location is covered by a National Park, which is the home of the extremely jeopardized Cat Ba langur. This golden-headed langur is hardly ever seen, as less than 60 specimens are believed to endure in the wild, although it is the topic of a well-organised preservation programme; the Cat Ba Langur Preservation Program, a worldwide NGO that has its workplace at the National Park Head Quarters. The Park covers both land and aquatic locations and has a high biodiversity, although it is at danger from too quick a boost in tourist. Other mammals in the Park consist of civet felines and asian huge squirrels. Beyond Cat Ba town is a gorgeous island with much to check out.

How to get to Cat Ba?
There are several ways to get to Cat Ba. First of all you can book tickets which include the bus and ferry rides. But you can also book a single bus ticket to Hải Phòng, where the ferry leaves to Cat Ba. In Hải Phòng you can buy the ferry ticket to Cat Ba island. Where ever you book, make sure they take you to Cat Ba town (this is where the hotels and backpackers are).
bus from Tam Cốc to Hải Phòng
-minibus ride (6:30-09:50)
-costs around 120.000 VND (4,60 €/$4,30/£3,40)
-we booked in the Long Hotel in Tam Coc (staff is not nice and tries to scam people)
bus from Ninh Binh to Hải Phòng
-public bus from bus terminal
-83.000 VND (3,20 €/$3,65/£2,35)
ferry from Hải Phòng to Cat Ba town
-ferry leaves at the Bến Bính Pier (company: Hadeco)
-1.5 hour boat and bus ride
-a single ticket costs 170.000 VND (6,55 €/$7,50/£4,80)
-the ferry ticket includes a bus ride, as the ferry doesn’t always go to Cat Ba town. In this case you get transferred and they take you by bus to Cat Ba town.
The public transport from Cat Ba to Ha Noi is much cheaper as this is the capital of Vietnam. So you can book a ticket from Ha Noi to Cat Ba town and vice versa for around 230.000 VND (8,90 €/$10,15/£6,50) including all bus and ferry rides.
Where to stay on Cat Ba Island?
You definitely need to stay in Cat Ba town. You find many hotels for around 10-15 USD. But be careful, the prices on weekends triple. For us it was impossible to find a hotel room cheaper than 40 USD. We would recommend to go to Cat Ba during the week. Luckily we got two beds in CatBa Central Hostel (5$ incl breakfast). Even though we shared a dorm with 28 people, the room was quiet and nice.

Cat Ba Island Bus Transfer (Halong Bay, Vietnam)
We are off to Cat Ba Island!! Cat Ba Island is located aside of Halong and Lan Ha Bay! This area is known for the stunning and iconic floating limestone islands! We decided to hop on a bus with a one way ticket to check out this area! We weren't sure how many days we wanted to stay here and we ended up extending our time here as well!
