We Went to Cat Island Bahamas, This is What Happened
Cat Island in The Bahamas is a quiet, chill-vibes only type of place. A place you go to explore and make your own fun. That's what Castaway Crystal and myself did. For 5 days we traveled all across the island, stopping at rustic beach bars, pouring rum drinks, chatting up locals, feeding potcake pups, climbing the highest peaks and much more. This video give you a pretty good taste of what a trip to Cat Island, Bahamas is like.
Cheers!

Who Is RumShopRyan:
Howdy! I’m Ryan and I hail from the land-locked, can’t get any further from the ocean, state of Kansas. I moved to laid back southwest Florida in 2001. I didn’t know a single person and didn’t have a job. Risky I know, but the ocean was calling and I had to answer.
I’m a huge fan of Kansas City sports, so you’ll probably see a lot of Jayhawks, Chiefs and Royals attire in my photos. Kansas City is a great town and I’m glad I’m from there, but the coastal life was calling. It’s kind of like Kenny Chesney’s “island boy” song. Check out the lyrics and you’ll see what I mean.
I write because I’m passionate about the Caribbean and the island lifestyle, and it’s my way to share it with you. If it has anything to do with the Caribbean, rum drinks, beach style music, or Caribbean culture, you’ll be able to find it on this site.
When in the Caribbean you’ll find a camera around my neck and note pad in my pocket. This is how I document the experiences in unique and interesting ways and bring it back to you, the Castaways.
Who is Castaway Crystal:
I was raised in Southwest Florida so it’s no surprise that I have a love for beaches, water and nature. As a child, most weekends were spent fishing in the warm gulf waters on the family boat. As an adult, most weekends are spent soaking up the sun on Ft. Myers Beach. Even though I have always loved the coastal life, I don’t think I fully appreciated it until I moved to Nashville, TN. I’m all about experiencing new things, and as a Licensed Massage Therapist I thought it would be amazing to massage some of Nashville’s biggest stars (a girl can dream right?). But I missed the sun and sand too much—and let’s not forget the rum runners! After a year I couldn’t take it anymore, this sun bunny moved back to her coast of somewhere beautiful.
I’ve always been passionate about photography and writing but my passions never really had a purpose until I met Ryan. I couldn’t be happier being Ryan’s first mate and sharing my photos and stories with you. May they inspire you to go after your tropical dreams and wishes. Make a plan…Set a date…Just go!
Cat Island - The REAL Bahamas HD
Welcome to the Out Islands of the Bahamas, or as we like to call it the REAL Bahamas. This video is about the island of Cat. It is our intent to show a glimpse of our two hosts (Kevin Oestenstad and Jennifer Fox) discovering the Out Islands of the REAL Bahamas for the first time.
Join them on their journey to discover truly authentic Bahamian destination experiences in Cat Island. They get off the beaten path and SEEK what historical, natural, and cultural wonders these beautiful islands in the Bahamas offers to visitors.
What they found in Cat completely changed their perspective of what they thought about the Bahamas. The Out Islands is not a place for everyone, so if you are looking for touristy resorts, crowded beaches, casinos and cruise stops, or marine life behind aquarium glass, don't come to the Out Islands.
More importantly, our hosts found themselves. These tranquil islands of the Bahamas also allow you to RECONNECT to yourself and your loved ones. Learn more about the resorts where you can stay and the activities you can do on Cat Island and the REAL Bahamas at
If you have a great story about Cat Island, we would love for you to share them with us.
Cat Island, Bahamas - Fountain Bay Resort Room Tour
Hey Castaways! Here is a look at where we stayed during out stay on Cat Island in the Bahamas. Fountain Bay Resort is where we called home during our 5 days visit to this quiet Bahamian island.
The resort is located in the New Bight settlement, just a short drive from the New Bight airport.
Fountain Bay Resort has 5 of these cottages and they are located on the souther end of the property on the beach. The beach looks out on to a blue tidal lagoon. I believe one of the Cottages on the end looks out on to the open water.
This video will give you a look at the modern rooms that have all the comforts you could need during your stay. King size bed, full kitchen, large bathroom, even and outdoor shower!
Enjoy the tour of Fountain Bay Resort's Beach Cottages.
You can find out more about Cat Island and Fountain Bay Resort on

Fountain Bay Resort, Cat Island Bahamas
Fountain Bay Resort is located on Cat Island in the Bahamas. This rustic Bahamian island offers up stunning beaches, great local food and friendly people. Fountain Bay Resort is in New Bight settlement, about right in the middle of the island on the lee side. The resort features 5 upscale cottages, a clubhouse restaurant and bar, water sports and some stunning crystal clear water. We enjoyed our stay and hope you will to!
Definitely grab a kayak or paddle board and explore the two tidal lagoons on either side of the bay. You could see stingrays, sea turtles, and small sharks. They also have a pig beach! Just ask and they will take you out there.
More cottages are coming and they are currently building a marina for you boaters. Cheers!

Cat Island exploration - post Hurricane Katrina.wmv
Sailing our custom Offshore 39 cutter to Cat Island (Gulf Barrier Islands) and exploring the barrier island post hurricane Katrina. The deserted island shows dramatic ravages from the hurricane Katrina when 10 meter ocean waves and tital surge covered the whole island. We wrecked boats washed-up into the island dunes, evidence of many animals living on the island such as racoons, snakes, armadillos, and sea otters (maybe alligators?). Very shallow approach from the North side of the island. We had to anchor our deep draft sailboat nearly 1 mile out in the Mississippi Sound and motor in with the inflatable dinghy.
Japan's Cat Island - Incredible!
This is the first video of a special video series featuring Japan's Cat Island! To experience the amazing history and culture of Japan's Cat Island, watch the acclaimed Japanese documentary Cat Heaven Island (English Subtitled):
Watch the Cat Island Video Series. New episodes will be added so be sure to subscribe!
Like Tashirojima, Aoshima island (青島), Ehime, has become one of the popular destinations for the cat lovers. The island has 15 people (between 50-80 years old) and more than 100 cats. There is neither inn, restaurant nor vending machine.
During WWII, many people escaped to the island from the main land. The island population hit the highest of 655 people in 1960. There have not been enough job so many people left the island. On 1976 the island's only primary school shut down. In early 2000 the cat population started to grow while the human population hit then new low, 50. Today you only see 15 people( 4 fishermen and the rest retirees) on the island.
There are nos car or even a bike on the island, so there are real threats to the cats, where they live peacefully among the many abandoned houses.
Another cat island in Japan is Tashirojima Island (田代島) in Ishinomaki, Miyagi, with 86 inhabitants and more than 100 cats. On this island, the cat is enshrined. There is a cat shrine and also a cat photo competition!

THE CAT ISLAND EXPERIENCE with Shore Thing Fishing Charters
7 miles off the coast of Mississippi is Shore Thing Fishing Charters one of kind, all inclusive, Cat Island Experience. Everything is included (guided fishing trips, meals, lodging, kayaks, tours, etc). You gotta see it to believe it!!!
Pigeon Cay Beach Club, Cat Island, Bahamas
This is Pigeon Cay Beach Resort on Cat Island in the Bahamas... Nice place... I was there working on a top secret video that will be released soon but loved visiting this place so much, I couldn't help getting the drone up for a few shots. You can book yourself a room there by visiting their website
The place is a little tricky to get to. But if you don't like the big Atlantis resort kind of vacation; if you want undeveloped white sand beaches with very few people around you, then the extra effort is worth it. This is a real discovery not yet ruined by top ten lists in travel mags.
This place is so low key, you can take a 3 mile walk on the beach and not see another person. Water clarity and temp is perfect and the best quality you will see anywhere on the planet. I've been to the Maldives and the Seychelles which are good, but not any better than this.
Rooms are more like penthouse suites with a living room and full kitchen and all are only steps from the sand with excellent views. They are very clean and comfortable.
This is not a place for well healed people who like to wear high heals to dinner. It's a place for people who don't expect 24/7 service and find pleasure in waking up the hotel owner to cook you breakfast. Drinks are always available at the bar but it's self serve and you write up your own ticket on an honor system.
Hotel owners Leslie and Ned have been holding the fort here for over 20 years. Some people complain about Ned being a little prickly but he's actually got a heart of gold. His crusty nature is also his charm. He's a real guy's guy and cooks like a professional chef. You will love his cooking once you learn to just find him and say I'm hungry, can you cook up something? He never refuses.
The only time Ned got a little antsy with me was when I started buzzing his dogs with my drone. I think that is enough of that, don't you? he said. I agreed and brought it down for good.
Unfortunately Leslie was not there during our stay, but from the family pictures you can view in the office/gift shop she looks like a really warm and pleasant person.
It's a unique experience that will change the way you look at vacation travel. Let me know if your experience is as good as mine was.
Sailing to Cat Island
Sailing a 2012 SeaEagle SailCat 14sc Catamaran from Long Beach, MS to Cat Island, MS. I also plan on sailing my Oday 22 here soon for an overnight trip, doing some work on my outboard motor and other things I have to do first. Actually an overnight is possible with Danny's sail cat shown in this video. It's just a matter of bringing a tent, plenty of places to setup right on the beach.

047 Cat Island
A brief introduction to Cat Island, Bahamas.
2019 03 Cat Island
March 10, 2019
After waiting a month in Marsh Harbor I replaced the engine’s coolant pump. I ran the boat down to the southern anchorages in the Sea of Abaco. I Jumped from Abaco to the Spanish Wells area (Royal Harbor) to beat a cold front. A wonderful heavy rain allowed me to clean the boat and top off the fresh water tanks. Onward I sailed south in Eleuthera to Rock Sound. RS has a well protected anchorage, supermarket and a Laundromat. Southward bound I am in Cat Island where I stayed a few days at Bennett’s Harbor. I had met most of the Americans/Canadians who are seasonal visitors there. I am currently near the southerly tip of Cat waiting for the easy weather widow so I may sail to Long Island.

2014 04 April's visit to Shear Madness at Cat Island, Bahamas
This is a photo slideshow of family member April's visit to Shear Madness at Cat Island. We find beautiful beaches, kayak a lovely creek, experience some local food and drink, climb to the highest point in the Bahamas, meet some fellow cruisers and see some underwater life while snorkeling.
The Hermitage, Cat Island Bahamas
We finally made it to The Hermitage on Cat Island in the Bahamas. At 206 feet above sea level, it’s the highest point in the Bahamas.
I had a crazy idea to propose to Castaway Crystal here a few years ago, but bad weather and my own bad planning didn’t let that happen, probably for the best! So when we finally made it to Cat Island, The Hermitage was the first thing on our list to see. Enjoy the video and let us know if you’ve been and what you thought. Cheers!
