Catalina, is a rocky island off the coast of the U.S. state of California in the Gulf of Santa Catalina. The island is 22 miles (35 km) long and 8 miles (13 km) across at its greatest width. The island is located about 22 miles (35 km) south-southwest of Los Angeles, California. The highest point on the island is 2,097 feet (639 m) Mt. Orizaba. Santa Catalina is part of the Channel Islands of California archipelago and lies within Los Angeles County.
Catalina was originally settled by Native Americans who called the island Pimugna or Pimu and referred to themselves as Pimugnans or Pimuvit. The first Europeans to arrive on Catalina claimed it for the Spanish Empire. Over the years, territorial claims to the island transferred to Mexico and then to the United States. During this time, the island was sporadically used for smuggling, otter hunting, and gold-digging, before successfully being developed into a tourist destination by chewing gum magnate William Wrigley, Jr. beginning in the 1920s. Since the 1970s, most of the island has been administered by the Catalina Island Conservancy.

Avalon is the only incorporated city on Santa Catalina Island of the California Channel Islands, and the southernmost city in Los Angeles County. The population was 3,728 at the 2010 census.
Before European colonization, the island was inhabited by the Tongva people. From the late 19th century to the early 20th century, several different developers tried to develop Avalon into a resort destination community, but most went bankrupt. In 1919, William Wrigley, Jr. gained control of Avalon. Wrigley oversaw much of the development of Avalon, including the construction of the landmark Catalina Casino.
The city remains primarily a resort community. Most of the waterfront is dominated by tourism-oriented businesses. The older parts of the town on the valley floor consist primarily of small houses and two and three-story buildings in various traditional architectural styles. Avalon attracts about 1 million visitors a year and is frequently visited by cruise ships.

CIMI: Catalina Island Conservancy
Students visiting Catalina Island Marine Institute for the first time make various exclamations, and one of the most popular is, “Why is the water so clear here compared to the mainland?” With 88% of Catalina Island protected, it is no wonder that the land and surrounding oceans are pristine. But, who do we have to thank for ensuring the continuation of an unmarred coastline? The Catalina Island Conservancy acts as the protectors and ecologically safe tour guides of this natural, wild island.

AMERICA'S MOST BEAUTIFUL ISLAND |ST. CATALINA ISLAND | AVALON | LONG BEACH TO ENSENADA MEXICO
ST. Catalina Cruise from Long beach Carlifonia to Ensenada, a port city on the Pacific coast of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula. Santa Catalina, one of California’s Channel Islands, lies southwest of Los Angeles. It's known for its wildlife, dive sites and Mt. Orizaba, its highest peak. The resort town of Two Harbors lies to the north. To the south, in the city of Avalon, palm trees and cabanas line Descanso Beach. Avalon’s circular, art deco Catalina Casino is a cultural center with a movie theater, ballroom and museum. Most of the island is controlled by the Catalina Island Conservancy, a private nonprofit organization. The mission of the Catalina Island Conservancy is to be a steward of its lands through a balance of conservation, education and recreation. The Conservancy protects the natural and cultural heritage of Santa Catalina Island, stewarding approximately 42,000 acres (170 km2) of land (88 percent of the island), 50 mi (80 km) of shoreline, an airport, and more than 200 mi (320 km) of roads. Glass bottom boats tour the reefs and shipwrecks of the area, and scuba diving and snorkeling are popular in the clear water. Lover's Cove, to the east of Avalon, and Descanso Beach, to the west of the Casino, are popular places to dive. At Casino Point is the Avalon Underwater Dive Park, which was the first non-profit underwater park in the United States. Catalina has also been an active port of many cruise lines since the 1990s, with Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruises, and Carnival Cruise Lines making the port a regular for Baja cruises.

History of Catalina Bison: Hollywood, Tourism and Ecology
In prehistoric times, millions of bison roamed North America, but by the late 1800s, they were nearly extinct. Through conservation efforts, they can now be found in all 50 states, including national parks, private lands and even on one of the Channel Islands off the coast of Southern California. As VOA's Elizabeth Lee reports, the story of how the bison crossed 45 kilometers of ocean to get to Catalina Island is right out of a Hollywood movie.

Soaring Over Catalina celebrates the newly repaired runway at the Conservancy's Airport in the Sky and the landmark partnership for strategic training with the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Navy to execute this project. The Airport in the Sky is a historic and critical asset to Catalina Island, providing access for first responders, travelers and more than three million pounds of freight each year. Although privately owned by the Conservancy, the Airport in the Sky serves the public welcoming thousands of general aviation flights and encouraging a unique type of recreation to visitors and locals alike.
These vital repairs to the newly named ACE Clearwater Airfield will ensure aviation on Catalina Island will continue for many years to come.

Jefferson Graham brings the Photowalk cameras to Catalina Island, off the Los Angeles, for episode #46 of the Photowalk travel adventure series.
This edition inspired by Apple, which has named its latest macOS operating system after the island, macOS Catalina.
The Photowalk is all about searching for the best photo spots on the island, including the historic Casino, former William Wrigley mansion Inn at Mt. Ada, and where to get the best sunset and sunrise shots on the island. (Start with the best view shots on the boats.)
Along the way, Jeff takes a trip to the back country of the island, to Two Harbors and Airport in the Sky and meets some fascinating local characters.

Tracks in the Sand: Saving the Catalina Island Fox
In 1999, the Catallina Island Fox faced extinction. Canine distemper had been introduced to the island -- likely by an infected dog from the mainland. The foxes had no immunity to the disease and 90 percent of them perished. Only 100 foxes remained at the west end of the island beyond Two Harbors, and the foxes were listed as a federally endangered species in 2004.
The Santa Catalina Island Conservancy (catalinaconservancy.org) immediately committed resources to saving the foxes and enlisted the help of Dave Garcelon's Institute for Wildlife Studies (iws.org) to develop and implement a plan. First, they had to discover why the foxes were dying. Then they had to save the remaining foxes and repopulate the island.
Today, there is a happy ending! At the end of 2013, the Conservancy estimated that over 1800 foxes populated the island. And although the population has rebounded, the foxes remain on the endangered species list.
This 10 minute video summarizes the efforts of the Conservancy to save the foxes. A longer 30 minute version was produced that won Videographer and Telly awards in Environmental and Fundraising categories.

Hollywood's Magical Island -Catalina Trailer
Through the remarkable eye of first time film director, Greg Reitman, we get a first hand glimpse of The Magic Isle. While exploring historical, social, and environmental changes, the film captures the mystical splendors, natural beauty and romance of Santa Catalina Island. Using a mix of rare 16mm, archival film and old black and white stills, inter-cut with interviews of islanders, historians and celebrities; the viewer is taken on a journey during America’s golden era. It begins with the acquisition of the Santa Catalina Island Company in 1919 led by William Wrigley, Jr. He set a course for Catalina’s future in the world of art, sports, music and entertainment that was unmatched in US history even through present day.
The film documents architectural achievements, many first of a kind buildings and innovations that transformed Catalina from a simple island into a modern day state-of-the-art playground. The film highlights many of the individuals including stars of the Big Band Era, Marilyn Monroe, and the island’s role as Hollywood’s secret playground for the stars. The island even played a role in helping to elect a President. We witness the island’s tragedy and heartache – deftly captured in the film with heartfelt interviews and a score that tugs at the emotions. Utilizing interviews with Jean-Michel Cousteau, heirs of the Wrigley family, residents and visitors of the island; we learn of William Wrigley, Jr’s dream of preserving the island’s natural beauty as well as providing a magical place for all to enjoy. The film concludes with Art Good Jazz Trax, Fender’s Catalina Island Blues Festival, and a visual kaleidoscope of modern day Catalina Island as an ecological paradise highlighting the revival of the island as a place of leisure and entertainment.

Prior to the modern era, the island was inhabited by people of the Gabrielino/Tongva tribe, who, having had villages near present-day San Pedro and Playa del Rey, regularly traveled back and forth to Catalina for trade. The Tongva called the island Pimu or Pimugna and referred to themselves as the Pimugnans or Pimuvit. Archeological evidence shows Pimugnan settlement beginning in 7000 BC. The Pimugnans had settlements all over the island at one time or another, with their biggest villages being at the Isthmus and at present-day Avalon, Shark/Little Harbor, and Emerald Bay. The Pimugnans were renowned for their mining, working and trade of soapstone which was found in great quantities and varieties on the island. This material was in great demand and was traded along the California coast.
Since Catalina Island was never connected to mainland California, it was originally lacking in all terrestrial life. Any plants or animals that arrived on the island had to make their way across miles of open ocean. The original species to come to the island arrived by chance by blowing over on the wind, drifting or swimming over the ocean, or flown over by wing. Starting with the Native Americans and continuing today, animals and plants have also been introduced by humans, both intentionally or accidentally.
Catalina is home to at least fifty endemic species that occur naturally on the island and nowhere else in the world. This limited distribution of a species may result from the extinction of the original population on the mainland combined with its continued survival on the island where there may be fewer threats to its continued existence.
The island is also home to a number of non-native animals, notably including the American bison.
