History of Catalina Bison: Hollywood, Tourism and Ecology
In prehistoric times, millions of bison roamed North America, but by the late 1800s, they were nearly extinct. Through conservation efforts, they can now be found in all 50 states, including national parks, private lands and even on one of the Channel Islands off the coast of Southern California. As VOA's Elizabeth Lee reports, the story of how the bison crossed 45 kilometers of ocean to get to Catalina Island is right out of a Hollywood movie.

The second largest of the Channel Islands, just 22 miles from California's coast, Catalina makes a great family weekend.
Our kids had a blast on the hour-long ferry from Dana Point to the island, where we spotted sailboats, kayakers, and a pod of frolicking dolphins.
Once you disembark in Avalon Bay, grab a golf cart for a tour around the island, and then take a stroll along Crescent Drive, Catalina's main boardwalk, and check out the Catalina Casino (Avalon Casino).
Here, kids can enjoy a treat of spun taffy, ice cream or caramel apples at the old-fashioned confectionary Lloyds of Avalon — — or enjoy a few video games and skee ball at the Metropole Marketplace arcade.
A trip to the island isn't complete without a stroll along the Green Pleasure Pier, where you can grab some fish and chips at Eric's restaurant and then go for a cruise on the bay.
The Undersea Tour aboard the Starlight and Emerald semi-submersible vessels is a must-see.
During the voyage, you'll explore the clear waters of Lover's Cove and a protected kelp forest where you'll come face to face with bright orange garibaldi, spotted calico bass, and opaleyes — among many other types of marine life. The 45-minute tour is also offered at night.
To explore Catalina's rugged interior and native wildlife, hop aboard the Classic Inland Motor Tour, which follows the 1800s stagecoach route. In Middle Ranch, you'll meet Tachi, an endangered Santa Catalina Island Fox who acts as an educational ambassador for her species. You'll also see a herd of wandering bison, native woodpeckers, and perhaps a bald eagle or two.
At El Rancho Escondido, the Wrigley family's Hidden Ranch, you can enjoy an Arabian horse demonstration and then spend about 45 minutes walking through the ranch. Pet the horses in their stables, play with a wandering kitty, or watch a short film on the ranch's history. A small museum displays Bohlin saddles, carriages and family memorabilia.
After your tour, the Golf Gardens are just steps away. Known as one of the world's most challenging and beautiful miniature golf courses, the lushly landscaped grounds offer 18 holes of family fun.

AMERICA'S MOST BEAUTIFUL ISLAND |ST. CATALINA ISLAND | AVALON | LONG BEACH TO ENSENADA MEXICO
ST. Catalina Cruise from Long beach Carlifonia to Ensenada, a port city on the Pacific coast of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula. Santa Catalina, one of California’s Channel Islands, lies southwest of Los Angeles. It's known for its wildlife, dive sites and Mt. Orizaba, its highest peak. The resort town of Two Harbors lies to the north. To the south, in the city of Avalon, palm trees and cabanas line Descanso Beach. Avalon’s circular, art deco Catalina Casino is a cultural center with a movie theater, ballroom and museum. Most of the island is controlled by the Catalina Island Conservancy, a private nonprofit organization. The mission of the Catalina Island Conservancy is to be a steward of its lands through a balance of conservation, education and recreation. The Conservancy protects the natural and cultural heritage of Santa Catalina Island, stewarding approximately 42,000 acres (170 km2) of land (88 percent of the island), 50 mi (80 km) of shoreline, an airport, and more than 200 mi (320 km) of roads. Glass bottom boats tour the reefs and shipwrecks of the area, and scuba diving and snorkeling are popular in the clear water. Lover's Cove, to the east of Avalon, and Descanso Beach, to the west of the Casino, are popular places to dive. At Casino Point is the Avalon Underwater Dive Park, which was the first non-profit underwater park in the United States. Catalina has also been an active port of many cruise lines since the 1990s, with Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruises, and Carnival Cruise Lines making the port a regular for Baja cruises.

Elizabeth Turk: Tipping Point Exhibition at the Catalina Island Museum
MacArthur Genius Fellowship Awardee Elizabeth Turk began working on the Tipping Point exhibition in the Fall of 2018 during a month-long open studio/live exhibition at Orange Coast College. Highlighting various attributes of this continent's birds, Turk developed unique symbols exploring the greater concept - Extinction. The Sound Columns juxtapose the ephemeral with the external. Inspired by recordings of extinct birds Turk created an evocative sculptural metal maze. The imagery creates beautiful interactive moments where the audience becomes both victim and aggressor in the fate of our planet. The interactive moments become even more dramatic when illuminated after dark. More information can be found at CatalinaMuseum.org.

THE S.S. CATALINA REMOVED FROM THE ENSENADA HARBOR
As you entered Ensenada Harbor in the past you would have seen a curious sight to starboard that may have shivered your timbers. Half submerged and arising from the harbor mud was the carcass of a once proud ferry that served the run between California ports and Catalina in times past. For more than 20 years this navigation hazard kept vigilance on the busy port activities in Ensenada Harbor. Brought to Ensenada 26 years prior to serve as an entertainment center and gambling casino, the historic ship had been the subject of controversy for many years and now has been removed by the Port of Ensenada.
She was the million dollar steamship, in the days when a million dollars was a lot of money. She was built with chewing gum, or more correctly of steel, bought with the profits from a chewing gum empire created by Mr. William Wrigley, Jr., who happened to own an island about 24 miles off the coast of Southern California called Santa Catalina. The only major town on the island was Avalon, an almost Mediterranean-like setting, far removed from the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles, on the other side of the San Pedro Channel. By the 1920's, tourism to the island was booming, thanks in part to a strong economy and Mr. Wrigley's various enterprises on the island, including a training camp for his Chicago Cubs baseball team, and his own steamship line known as the Wilmington Transportation Company.
The new steamship S.S Catalina, was built in 1924 to provide additional capacity and more elegant transportation to the island. William Wrigley Jr., himself laid the keel on December 26, 1923 at the yards of the Los Angeles Shipbuilding and Drydock Company. Situated in the heart of Los Angeles harbor, this location later became the Todd Shipyard. The new ship was designated hull number 42. After a quick construction period the new vessel was ready to take to the water for the first time. Named for the island which she would serve, the S.S. Catalina was launched on May 3, 1924, by Miss Marcia A. Patrick, the daughter of Joseph Patrick, president of the Santa Catalina Island Company. The Mayor of Los Angeles, along with 3,000 other people were on hand to witness the event. A little over eight weeks later the ship commenced her maiden voyage from Wilmington, California to Avalon on June 30th, under the command of Captain A. A. Morris. Few on that first voyage could have envisioned that 25 million people would follow them onto those same decks, enjoying a 2 hour cruise to Catalina Island during an active career of 51 years!
The S.S. Catalina holds the honor of being listed on the National Register of Historic Places. But unlike the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum or the Mission San Fernando Rey, which share these accolades, the S.S. Catalina carried 25 million passengers in her heyday, and ferried more troops in World War II than any other military transport. A 2006 panga ride around the 302-foot-long, 52-foot wide vessel found much of the vessel's port railing stripped away, revealing a bizarre sight of sea lions bellied up to the U-shaped wooden bar where passengers once gathered to sip cocktails. Imagine the luminaries that once walked these decks!

Immigration[edit]
In the beginning of 2012, people of foreign background and their descendants were estimated to have formed 25% of the total population.[2]
Of these 'New Belgians', 1,200,000 (49%) are of European ancestry and 1,350,000 (51%)[3] are from non-Western countries.
Since the relaxation of the Belgian nationality law more than 1.3 million migrants have acquired Belgian citizenship and are now considered new Belgians. 89.2% of inhabitants of Turkish origin have been naturalized, as have 88.4% of people of Moroccan background, 75.4% of Italians, 56.2% of the French and 47.8% of Dutch people.[3]
In 2007, there were 1.38 million foreign-born residents in Belgium, corresponding to 12.9% of the total population. Of these, 685 000 (6.4%) were born outside the EU and 695 000 (6.5%) were born in another EU Member State.[4]
Mysterious Catalina - Catalina Island Giants
Glidden had opened a museum and displayed his finds to the public. According to Jim’s research, Glidden had not only combed Catalina island looking for artifacts and skeletons, but many of the other islands in what make up the Channel Island chain. Glidden was successful in his endeavors as he unearthed hundreds of Native American skeletons. He was also employed by the Heye Museum who displayed his discoveries in its museum.
However, there seemed to be another race of beings which Glidden also found on the island and these were the giants of upward of 9 feet! These finds were sensationalized in the Los Angeles Times. 11The Mysterious Children’s Graves on Catalina Isle – Alma Overholt – Los Angeles TImes (1923-Current File); Nove 6 1932 ProQuest Historical Newspapers Los Angeles TImes (1881 – 1989)!

3000 Six Fingered Giants Found In Channel Islands?

Ralph Glidden has a rather interesting story to tell, a story which he continued to tell well after his death from beyond the grave...
While digging on Catalina Island in the Gulf of California between 1919 and 1928. He found, according to him, and numerous newspaper articles from the time, numerous skeletons, but what made his claims particularly interesting however, was the claim that their average height was around 7 to 9 feet.
The question arrived at, by all those who have heavily researched his story is, where are these skeletons today?
Could it really have just been a publicity stunt? - or did Glidden actually, somehow, find the remains of a lost race of giants?
Santa Catalina Island, also just known as Catalina Island, is one of the Channels Islands off the coast of California in USA.
The Channel Islands holds the title as the location of the earliest evidence for seafaring in the Americas, and also the earliest evidence of humans in North America.
Ralph Glidden who worked on the islands for several decades, was an amateur archaeologist who successfully uncovered ancient burial sites on Catalina Island.
From 1919 to 1928: it is said that he excavated more than 800 grave-sites from about 100 individual locations around the island.
In addition to finding thousands of artefacts he also stated that he dug up almost 4000 human skeletons, a claim which has often received allot of negative attention, many claiming he lacked respect for the dead.
However, his reasoning was quite profound, He claimed that there once lived an advanced, ancient race of tall, fair haired Indians on Catalina Island and the adjacent islands.
With the male adults around 7 feet in height, the largest skeleton he claimed to have found being that of a towering 9 feet 2 inches tall being.
Glidden lost his sponsor after digging for almost 10 years and the general opinion today is that he was just bluffing about finding giant skeletons, with the motive of creating interest and making money.
however, he never made much money from his finds, and received little financial attention. Additionally, Ralph Glidden was not the first to find a giant skeleton on Catalina Island. According to Pittsburgh Press July 20, 1913, and also the Daily Telegraph on July 26; a German naturalist named Dr. A.W Furstenan unearthed an 8-foot skeleton on the island. The skeleton was found with artefacts such as mortars, pestles and arrowheads; all different from the ordinary Indian burials, Plus a strange, flat stone, bearing unknown symbols.
Furstenan had, while in Mexico, heard the legend regarding the noble race of giants that had once lived on Catalina Island, long before the white man had arrived.
He would find the skeleton along Avalon Bay, in black, hard sand, yet alas, the remains have since vanished.
It is not only on Catalina island that giant skeletons have been found, all over the islands there are countless reports. According to several newspaper articles, Santa Rosa Island was the site of a dig in 1959 where they discovered several skeletons more than 7 feet tall. The tops of the skulls were painted red, and the skulls were described as having sloped foreheads.
On San Nicolas Island west of Catalina in 1897, a party of relic hunters stayed three weeks on the barren island and Newark Daily Advocate, would subsequently tell of them finding Bones of a Giant Race on San Nicolas Island whether these bones finally, made it into private collections is unknown.
In 1930 Glidden was ready to sell his collection including his whole series of secrets regarding the island. In return, he requested an annual annuity for life, funding for five expeditions, and the necessary financing for various planned publications that included a large monograph chronicling all of his excavations.
But it seems, sadly, regardless of Gliddens confidence, nobody wanted to buy his miraculous finds, and in 1962, at the age of 81 years old, he sold his collection for a mere $5,000.
Just 6 years later Glidden died.
However,,
In March 2012, an unlabelled box was discovered, resting deep within the Catalina Island Museum archives. In this box, was Gliddens collection of secret records.
Among which, was, most importantly, a series of unique photographs showing Ralph Gidden indeed excavating one of his authentic, giant, and very ancient skeletons.

Hollywood's Magical Island -Catalina Trailer
Through the remarkable eye of first time film director, Greg Reitman, we get a first hand glimpse of The Magic Isle. While exploring historical, social, and environmental changes, the film captures the mystical splendors, natural beauty and romance of Santa Catalina Island. Using a mix of rare 16mm, archival film and old black and white stills, inter-cut with interviews of islanders, historians and celebrities; the viewer is taken on a journey during America’s golden era. It begins with the acquisition of the Santa Catalina Island Company in 1919 led by William Wrigley, Jr. He set a course for Catalina’s future in the world of art, sports, music and entertainment that was unmatched in US history even through present day.
The film documents architectural achievements, many first of a kind buildings and innovations that transformed Catalina from a simple island into a modern day state-of-the-art playground. The film highlights many of the individuals including stars of the Big Band Era, Marilyn Monroe, and the island’s role as Hollywood’s secret playground for the stars. The island even played a role in helping to elect a President. We witness the island’s tragedy and heartache – deftly captured in the film with heartfelt interviews and a score that tugs at the emotions. Utilizing interviews with Jean-Michel Cousteau, heirs of the Wrigley family, residents and visitors of the island; we learn of William Wrigley, Jr’s dream of preserving the island’s natural beauty as well as providing a magical place for all to enjoy. The film concludes with Art Good Jazz Trax, Fender’s Catalina Island Blues Festival, and a visual kaleidoscope of modern day Catalina Island as an ecological paradise highlighting the revival of the island as a place of leisure and entertainment.
