Cataloochee Valley, Great Smoky Mountains National Park
© Great Smoky Mountains Association 2012.
Cataloochee is a beautiful, fairly remote valley nestled on the North Carolina side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Known today for Great Smoky Mountains National Park's elk reintroduction program, Cataloochee was once a farming community complete with a school, church, post office, and store. Of the nearly 200 structures that once stood in Cataloochee, only a handful remain. This is the park's best remaining example of historic frame construction. Hattie Caldwell Davis was born in Cataloochee and kindly shared some of her memories and knowledge of its history.

The Bugling of the Elk in the NC Smokies!
The Bugling of the Elk in the NC Smokies!
Cataloochee Valley is one of the most remote and most beautiful areas of the park, and a unique place to explore both the natural and cultural history of the Smokies. Once a populous settlement and mountain community, Cataloochee Valley is perhaps now best known for elk, which were reintroduced in the valley in 2001 after disappearing from North Carolina in the late 1700s as a result of over-hunting and loss of habitat. Early morning and late evening are regarded as the best times for viewing the elk (usually as they graze along the roads and in the meadows). Other wildlife, including black bear, white-tailed deer and wild turkeys, also roam the area. Cataloochee Valley is rich in history; with original homesteads still standing (tour a school, churches, a barn, and several homes), learn what life was like for early settlers of the area. There's also plenty of hiking, camping and fishing to be had here, so make sure a trip to Cataloochee Valley is on your itinerary while visiting Haywood County.

BHTV: Opportunities Abound for Equestrian Living in WNC
One of the ways to enjoy living in Western North Carolina is with horses. Opportunities abound here to enjoy horses or even live an equestrian lifestyle. Whether you own horses or just like to ride, our area has everything you need to Live the Life You Choose.
Community Information: Tryon, NC:
“Every summer we came to this area to horse show in the summers at Blowing Rock and the Asheville area,” says Martha Hall, Tryon resident. “And one summer, I had sold my property in Florida, and I was at the horse show in Asheville that used to be at the Biltmore. And I opened a magazine and saw the real estate prices and I thought, ‘Why am I living in Florida?’ And next thing I knew, I owned property here and I moved here 10 years ago, with Elmo and a couple of my other horses and I've never looked back. I have no desire to go anywhere else. It's just the greatest place to live.
“One main attraction that brings a lot of people to this area is the trail system,” says Hall. “A lot of these areas all have their own trail systems. And people that have their horses at their farm and wanna ride on the trails find it to be a very unique situation that you don't find very many places.”
And if you just enjoy riding, there are a number of trails that are open to the public. In Maggie Valley, Cataloochee Ranch is an incredible spot, as is the nearby Great Smoky Mountains National Park. At the Biltmore Estate, you can even bring your own horse and ride the miles of trails along this historic property.
“A lot of people live in a place where they don't ever see a horse,” says Judy Sutton of Cataloochee Ranch. “They don't live in a rural area where they drive by a horse pasture on their way to work. Here there are. In the mountains, hopefully here or other places, they're going to be able to get on a horse and go out on the trail. They're going to be able to see something more than the ring. I think that's a big draw here. You can trailer your horse into Cataloochee Valley, for instance. You can trailer it to different places and ride the park. The Great Smokies is 500,000 acres of trails. That's a horse friendly park. Most trails in the park you can ride on horseback. You're in the mountains. It's different every day. Depending on when you ride, you might even right the same trail one day, the next day it's going to look different because the leaves have changed or the flowers have changed. So it's different every day.”
“And this is not only a lifestyle here, it's a great community of people with real interesting backgrounds” says Hall. “It's got a great network of different disciplines, besides just showing, horse shows, and show jumping. There's the dressage community. There's a driving community. There is the eventing community. And we love Asheville and the Hendersonville area. There's all kinds of natural resources. We like to hike. We take our horses up to the Biltmore and do trail riding in DuPont Forest. So there's lots of things to do. You can even go skiing from here. All those just within an hour, two hours, you're in another world. We enjoy the benefits of having all that right in our own backyard.”
With vacant land still abundant, ranch and farm properties can be found in all but our most urban of areas. Waynesville, Tryon, and Fairview are just a few spots where you'll find horse properties available for purchase. And to find more communities with equestrian opportunities, use the community search function at beverly-hanks.com.

Beautiful Western North Carolina, Beautiful
God has created an awesome wonder in western North Carolina. The Blue Ridge and Smokey Mountains converge in this area. There are many scenic drives, such as the Cherohala Skyway, Tail of the Dragon, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and many others. There are many state and national parks that are a must-see. The back-road scenic drive from Colletsville to Blowing Rock is a great place to experience the wonders of a mountain stream called Wilson Creek. Cataloochee Valley is a great place to view wildlife such as the roaming elk. Maggie Valley is a great take-off point, as is Blowing Rock, Robbinsville, and Andrews. Fall is the best time to visit this area for the wonderful Fall Foliage experience. Grandfather Mountain and Mount Mitchell are two of the most scenic mountains in the eastern United States. Lake Lure, the site for the lake scenes of Dirty Dancing, is a great scenic walk with the lake and the mountains for a background. This area is truly one of the most beautiful in the United States. It is a great place to experience the beautiful handiwork of our Father who art in Heaven. God's not dead! He's still here! He's just hiding in the mountains waiting on true seekers.
