Good morning, fellow adventurers!
It is day 20 and we have just arrived in Recife, Brazil.
First stop was to Olinda, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site, founded in 1530 by the Portuguese.
We stopped to see a couple of churches and then we went through some of the markets. They have beautiful colors and all kinds of wonderful tchotchkes that you can buy.
Olinda and Recife is an exciting metropolis and is a mix of new high rises and old colonial structures and it is a lot of fun to go through some of these old towns with the cobblestone streets and fantastic colonial architecture.
This city is thriving! There are beautiful coastal beaches. Looking at the city beaches, it's very obvious how they got the name for Recife, which means reef.
Next we went to this church. This church was gold inside and they used 260 pounds of gold in order to turn this church into the magnificent gilded gold throughout.
Next stop was this shopping center that was formally a prison and each one of the cells was made a boutique, and we bought a couple of things while we were there.
What was interesting is there was one cell left empty, which I took a picture of so that you could see that that cell, which wasn't very big, held 20 prisoners.
They have restored this building and it is a great marketplace that almost all the tour buses go to.
Next, we went onto this boat ride because Recife, there's like three islands and the Dutch came in for about 20-something years and they built a lot of the harbor and many buildings in Recife, and we took a Catamaran that went under all of these bridges.
I would call Recife like the Amsterdam of Brazil as the Dutch had gone into Recife for about 20 something years - built the harbor and all of these bridges connecting all of these islands.
I am so sorry to be leaving Brazil so quickly as this country has so much to offer, and I will probably be talking about it for quite some time.
In closing, my wish for you is that you will love abundantly, protect your health, and be adventurous for life. You are beautiful. Let your light shine, Aloha!
