First Basin Chairlift
n 1972, a magnificent chairlift was built spanning the huge natural basin often filled by the surging waters of the South Esk River.
The chairlift covers some 457 metres, with terminal buildings at the First Basin (West Launceston) end and idling station at the Cliff Grounds side (Trevallyn).
The central span of 308 metres is believed to be the longest single chairlift span in the world.
Seating includes a safety bar which can be operated by either the passenger or attendant.
The slow speed of the chairlift enables passengers to appreciate fully and photograph the spectacular views of this ancient rock gorge..
Cataract Gorge & First Basin History
The earliest recorded visit to this area was made by settler William Collins in 1804 when exploring the Port in the ship Lady Nelson. He was particularly impressed by the South Esk and its cataract and wrote, Upon approaching the entrance I observed a large fall of water over rocks, nearly a quarter of a mile up a straight gully between perpendicular rocks about 150 ft high.
The beauty of the scene is probably not surpassed in the world. For the early development of this resort we are indebted to a private organization call The Launceston City and Suburbs Improvement Association, formed in December 1899. This body undertook to construct an access along the Cataract Gorge, which took eight years to complete. In 1940, a suspension bridge was constructed across the South Esk River at the head of the First Basin to connect the two sides of the River area.
Further up the River, at Duck Reach , a turbine-driven power station was constructed by the Council and it is understood that Launceston had the distinction of being the first City south of the Equator to be lit by electricity, generated by water power. On the 10th December, 1895, electricity was officially switched on.
Apart from the magnificent vistas along the cataract there are the very enjoyable developed areas in the vicinity of the Cliff Grounds Restaurant and the First Basin swimming pool. There is an extremely interesting variety of natural flora totalling more than 70 species native to the area which is also inhabited by many different species of native fauna and approximately seventy different species of birds have been seen in the Gorge including nine species endemic to Tasmania.

Good views
The bridge is the main focus point of the gorge, so it gets quite busy with people. But you can still find opportunity to take photos in either direction. The views from the bridge are great. ---- TimT941

TAS Day1 來看看我們今天做了什麼?ランセストンで宇宙旅行気分? Launceston/Pod inn/Penny Royal Adventures/Cataract Gorge Reserve

LAUNCESTON | TravelingTwo Tasmania | CATARACT GORGE | Study Abroad Australia
This week we went to Tasmania! We visited the town of Launceston and the Cataract Gorge. We flew from Melbourne to Launceston, which was a quick and easy flight. If you plan well ahead of time, it can very cheap to fly there. We took a hotel shuttle from the airport, as there was little public transport and no Uber. Our hotel (called Hotel Launceston / The Mecure Launceston) was in easy walking distance to the city. There were a few shopping areas in the city and lots of cute cafes! There was also a beautiful park right across the street from our hotel, highly recommend stopping by (called the City Park). The next day we walked to the Cataract Gorge, about a 30 min walk, but very enjoyable and easy. We crossed Kings Bridge and walked on the right side (the easy path) on the way there. Once we got to the main areas, there was an abundance of wildlife and beautiful nature. We had lunch at the Basin Cafe, which was good and had a nice view. We walked back on the other side of the Gorge, which had many stairs but was not too difficult. Overall it was a great day, and there was quite a bit to do there!
