Aalexandra suspension bridge Launceston.
History:
Opened 30 November 1904.
The total length is 220ft., the clear span between the centres of the steel towers being 150ft. The bridge structure is formed of steel frames, hung by steel rods from the main cables, and carrying
a wood decking, with a galvanized steel lattice guard at each side, giving a path way 3ft. 6in. wide. There are two main cables, taking the whole of the weight.
These are made of plough steel wire, of the highest quality, and are 1¾in. in diameter. Anchored at each end to the solid rock, they are passed over steel towers 32ft high, between which they depend in graceful curves.

Cataract Gorge & First Basin History
The earliest recorded visit to this area was made by settler William Collins in 1804 when exploring the Port in the ship Lady Nelson. He was particularly impressed by the South Esk and its cataract and wrote, Upon approaching the entrance I observed a large fall of water over rocks, nearly a quarter of a mile up a straight gully between perpendicular rocks about 150 ft high.
The beauty of the scene is probably not surpassed in the world. For the early development of this resort we are indebted to a private organization call The Launceston City and Suburbs Improvement Association, formed in December 1899. This body undertook to construct an access along the Cataract Gorge, which took eight years to complete. In 1940, a suspension bridge was constructed across the South Esk River at the head of the First Basin to connect the two sides of the River area.
Further up the River, at Duck Reach , a turbine-driven power station was constructed by the Council and it is understood that Launceston had the distinction of being the first City south of the Equator to be lit by electricity, generated by water power. On the 10th December, 1895, electricity was officially switched on.
Apart from the magnificent vistas along the cataract there are the very enjoyable developed areas in the vicinity of the Cliff Grounds Restaurant and the First Basin swimming pool. There is an extremely interesting variety of natural flora totalling more than 70 species native to the area which is also inhabited by many different species of native fauna and approximately seventy different species of birds have been seen in the Gorge including nine species endemic to Tasmania.

This is part of a batch of Tasmanian and other videos I managed to recover from a failed hard drive, so this batch is long-lost.
This is apparently one of the longest chairlifts in the world. It is an alternative to taking the ground trails and spans the gorge itself.

Our Cataract Gorge - Launceston
Cataract Gorge Reserve, or The Gorge as we call it, is a unique natural formation within a two-minute drive of central Launceston - a rare and natural phenomenon in any city.
In 15 minutes we can walk from the city center along the banks of the Tamar River into The Gorge.
From here one follows a pathway along the cliff face, originally built in the 1890s, looking down onto the South Esk River. The Kings Bridge over The Gorge was floated into place in 1867.
The First Basin, on the southern side, features a swimming pool (though it was flooded with the high water level today) and an open area surrounded by bushland.
In contrast, the shady northern side, named the Cliff Grounds, is a Victorian garden where wilderness is created with ferns and exotic plants - nature is enhanced by art. There's a Restaurant and kiosk, rolling lawns and a rotunda, a pub with a view, a footbridge and chairlift across the river, peacocks in the trees, wallabies at dusk. This may be the nation's most alluring
urban reserve........ (っ◕‿◕)っ
