FLORIDA | Episode 18 | Key West, Florida 2018 | Opening Week Lobster Season
Florida lobster season officially began August 6th, 2018 and we we fortunate enough to make the 13 hour drive down to the farthest point in the continental U.S. to take part. Join us as Da Spencer Adventure meets up with a bunch of new friends at the epicenter of Lobstering in the southern United States. It was our first try at it and I must say we did pretty good. The plan was to find enough keepers to enjoy at least one good lobster meal for the family. Thanks to Captain Frank and the crew of the Lady Elaine, we were able to bring in a great catch! Ensure you are properly licensed and adhere to all State and Federal regulations. As always, leave the land and sea better than you found it for future generations to come.
The Florida Keys stretch span approximately 100 miles from Key Largo to the North down to Key West in the south. What a blast it was enjoying the water in one of our absolute favorite vacation spots on the east coast. Please visit the websites below to start planning your trip to the Keys:

FLORIDA KEYS VACATION ???? FISHING IN THE FLORIDA KEYS!????
The kids wanted to go fishing in the Florida Keys, so we went off to World Wide Sportsman (Bass Pro) to pick up some supplies and fishing we went!
The Florida Keys:
The Florida Keys are a coral cay archipelago located off the southern coast of Florida, forming the southernmost portion of the continental United States. They begin at the southeastern coast of the Florida peninsula, about 15 miles (24 km) south of Miami, and extend in a gentle arc south-southwest and then westward to Key West, the westernmost of the inhabited islands, and on to the uninhabited Dry Tortugas. The islands lie along the Florida Straits, dividing the Atlantic Ocean to the east from the Gulf of Mexico to the northwest, and defining one edge of Florida Bay. At the nearest point, the southern part of Key West is just 90 miles (140 km) from Cuba. The Florida Keys are between about 23.5 and 25.5 degrees North latitude.
The climate of the Keys is defined as tropical savanna according to Köppen climate classification. More than 95 percent of the land area lies in Monroe County, but a small portion extends northeast into Miami-Dade County, such as Totten Key. The total land area is 137.3 square miles (356 km2). As of the 2010 census the population was 73,090 with an average density of 532.34 per square mile (205.54/km2), although much of the population is concentrated in a few areas of much higher density, such as the city of Key West, which has 32% of the entire population of the Keys. The US Census population estimate for 2014 is 77,136.
The city of Key West is the county seat of Monroe County. The county consists of a section on the mainland which is almost entirely in Everglades National Park, and the Keys islands from Key Largo to the Dry Tortugas.
The Keys were originally inhabited by Calusa and Tequesta Native Americans, and were later found and charted by Juan Ponce de León in 1513. De León named the islands Los Martires (The Martyrs), as they looked like suffering men from a distance. Key is derived from the Spanish word cayo, meaning small island. For many years, Key West was the largest town in Florida, and it grew prosperous on wrecking revenues. The isolated outpost was well located for trade with Cuba and the Bahamas, and was on the main trade route from New Orleans. Improved navigation led to fewer shipwrecks, and Key West went into a decline in the late nineteenth century.

Why did I go to Oklahoma
Why visit Oklahoma? Well the answer is simple, Family! We raised our nephew while his Mom and Dad were deployed overseas. During this time, we developed a very strong bond with Jerimiah and other than FaceBook phone calls, we don’t get to see him very often since they have returned him. Jerimiah now has a baby sister that we had not seen in person and the time came open that I could go out and visit. This is my first solo trip and vlog so don’t criticize me too hard lol.

Our Damage from Hurricane Irma in the Florida Keys
Arriving home after Hurricane Irma. Vlog #014. We arrive back into the Florida Keys and make our way home. We had optimism but it vanished quickly. So far we feel as though we have lost the boat, our entire living room suit, bedroom suit, tons of decorative furniture, cabinetry, it’s just a mess. We are both basically unemployed at this point as are many of us in the Keys. Places are just too damaged to be open. Things are really going to start getting tight I won’t lie. It was very cool to see the outpouring of assistance from all over the United States. So many police, fire, EMS, and Utility workers all coming together to help our community rebuild and get in some shape of livability. We are devastated by the condition of the boat. We were prepared for the home, but really thought by going above and beyond ad having the boat pulled it would be ok, but instead we chose the one marina that suffered the greatest damage. The Red Cross has been very helpful with food for the community and we were not too proud to get a hot meal from them, and it was delicious. We have more to come so stay tuned.

HAND FEEDING TARPON AT ROBBIES IN THE FLORIDA KEYS! ???? | ROBBIES ISLAMORADA????
We went hand feeding tarpon at Robbie's Marina in Islamorada in the Florida Keys.
Robbie's Marina
Robbie’s rests peacefully among coconut palms with shimmering views of the nearby islands where the unspoiled Florida Bay and the exquisite Atlantic Ocean converge. Cooled by the gentle tradewinds, and cantilevered over crystal-clear aquamarine waters, with a private sandy beach, one cannot help but understand why so many artists have chosen this place to immortalize in paintings. Robbie’s comprises quaint and discreet pavilions surrounded by lush tropical landscaping offering a taste of everything the Keys has to offer.
Feeding Tarpon
“Amazing,” “breathtaking” and “impressive” are words we often hear from first-time visitors. What they’re referring to is the school of more than 100 tarpon that come here daily and linger for hours. Occasionally, a tarpon actually rises up from the water in a powerful flash of silver and green to meet the fish as it leaves your hand. It’s a sight to behold! Maybe the “Silver Kings” just come here to see the humans, but toss a baitfish among them and the water churns as these monsters and the resident pelicans vie for the snack, causing quite a spectacle. Admission to the dock is $1 per person, and each bucket of fish is $3 (tax not included).
Robbie and his wife Mona started feeding Scarface in 1976. Scarface appeared floundering in the shallow waters near the dock; Robbie saw the struggling tarpon and, thinking it had swum too shallow and gotten stuck on the bank, went out into the water to free it. He lifted the fish and saw that the right side of its jaw was torn open. Hoping to revive the tarpon, Robbie placed it in the oxygen-rich shrimp tank and called old Doc Roach. The doctor showed up with his wife’s mattress needles and some twine, and Scarface became the first known tarpon with stitches. After several days of force-feeding, Scarface showed good recovery and weight gain; six months later he was released into the waters off the dock. Afterwards, Scarface continued to frequent the docks; sometimes bringing a friend. Soon more and more of the fish began to appear. Today, the tradition continues, with visitors from all across the world coming to marvel at the spectacle and offer these magnificent creatures a snack.
Islamorada, a Village of Islands, is an incorporated village in Monroe County, Florida, United States. It is located on the islands of Tea Table Key, Lower Matecumbe Key, Upper Matecumbe Key, Windley Key and Plantation Key in the Florida Keys.

How To Catch Blue Runners - The Easiest Live Bait **Tutorial**
Blue Runners are loved by commerical fisherman, but not so much by the recreational crowd. Could it be because they are so easy to catch? Just about everyday you can find blue runners off the beaches, under anchored cargo ships, markers, etc.
When used as Live Bait, Blue runners entice some of the BIGGEST FISH. This is why we call them the big fish bait'. Whether you are slow trolling, kite fishing, or dropping down on wrecks - Blue Runners make an excellent bait as they are hardy and send off a ton of vibration attracting attention for a wide range of game fish.
So when the pilchards or your favorite bait is scarce don't count out blue runners as a great bait to fish offshore.
Tight Lines,
Captain Mike
