Catedral Primada Santa Maria de Toledo Spain
Building of the Primate Cathedral of Saint Mary was begun in 1226 under the rule of Ferdinand III. The site had previous been used as a Visigoth basilica, its 2nd version was consecrated in 587, later it had become a mosque. The intention of the cathedral builders was to cover all of the sacred space of the former city mosque with the cathedral, and of the former sahn with the cloister. It also combines some characteristics of the Mudéjar style, mainly in the cloister, and with the presence of multifoiled arches in the triforium. The spectacular incorporation of light and the structural achievements of the ambulatory vaults are some of its more remarkable aspects.

Toledo, Catedral Primada Santa Maria
The Primate Cathedral of Saint Mary of Toledo (Spanish: Catedral Primada Santa María de Toledo) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Toledo, Spain.
The cathedral of Toledo is one of the three 13th-century High Gothic cathedrals in Spain and is considered, in the opinion of some authorities, to be the magnum opus of the Gothic style in Spain. It was begun in 1226 under the rule of Ferdinand III and the last Gothic contributions were made in the 15th century when, in 1493, the vaults of the central nave were finished during the time of the Catholic Monarchs. It was modeled after the Bourges Cathedral, although its five naves plan is a consequence of the constructors' intention to cover all of the sacred space of the former city mosque with the cathedral, and of the former sahn with the cloister. It also combines some characteristics of the Mudéjar style, mainly in the cloister, and with the presence of multifoiled arches in the triforium. The spectacular incorporation of light and the structural achievements of the ambulatory vaults are some of its more remarkable aspects. It is built with white limestone from the quarries of Olihuelas, near Toledo.
It is popularly known as Dives Toletana (meaning The Rich Toledan in Latin)

The Primate Cathedral of Saint Mary of Toledo is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Toledo, Spain. Catedral Primada is the seat of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Toledo.

The main façade of Toledo cathedral faces an irregular square containing the town hall and the Archbishop's Palace. To the left is the bell tower and to the right the projecting Mozarabic chapel that occupies the place where the second tower was to be built.
The Portal of the Clock is the oldest of the portals, begun in the 14th century and located in the façade of the north side. In addition, it is also known as:
Portal of the Fair, because it opened to the street where the fair was celebrated.
Portal of the Chapinería (shoe-maker shop), because it fronts the street which bears that name, the place where clogs were made and sold.
Portal of the Ollas, because in its decoration some ollas can be seen.
Portal of the Monarchs, alluding to the iconography of its sculpture.
Portal of the Lost Boy, also because of the iconography.
The retable of the Cathedral of Toledo is an extremely florid Gothic altarpiece; it is one of the last examples of this artistic style, which was disappearing as the Renaissance began to take hold in Spain. Commissioned by Cardinal Cisneros, the work was begun in 1497 and finished in 1504. Among the architects, painters and sculptors who collaborated in this collective masterwork were: Enrique Egas and Pedro Gumiel (design), Francisco de Amberes and Juan de Borgoña (estofado: the technique of finishing sculpture of wood with gilding and punched patterns, and polychromy), Rodrigo Alemán, Felipe Vigarny, Diego Copín de Holanda y Sebastián de Almonacid (religious images), and Joan Peti (carving and filigree).

The cathedral of Toledo, Catedral de Santa Maria de la Acunciòn de Toledo, is a masterpiece of the Spanish Gothic. The construction started under the rule of Ferdinand III in 1226. Originally, there was a Visigoth church at the place. It was torn down and the Moors erected a mosque. One wanted to remove this influence of the Islamic religion radically. Presumably, the architect Master Martin started the construction, which was continued later by Pedro Perez. He probably also designed the choir together with Villard de Honnecourt.
The construction of the west façade with its two towers started in 1418 and was completed at the beginning of the 16 century. The north tower, built by Alvar Martinez and Anequín de Egas Cueman, is 90 m high and contains the treasure vault in the lower floor.
The dome of the lower southern tower is designed by Jorge Manuel Theotocopuli, son of El Greco. Anequín de Egas Cueman also designed the southern portal, the Portal of the Lions (Puerta de Los Leones)
The interior was modeled after the Bourges Cathedral with five naves. To the east are several chapels, the burial places of well-known personalities.
We marvel at the gigantic nave first and then go to the high altar. This consists of innumerable pictures which are edged by gold-painted ornaments. Petit Jean, Copin of Holland, Felipe Bigarny and Sebastion de Almonacid carved the altar. Gilded and painted by Francisco de Amberes and Jean of Burgundy. The altar was completed in 1504, the year of Queen Isabella's death.
The artistically arranged choir room is opposite to the high altar.
We go on around the high altar and find ourselves in a fanciful arranged chapels and cave landscape. We then visit the cloister located in the north.
Although we have already visited a number of cathedrals in Spain now, we cannot say that we would have liked one better than another one. All of them are gigantic in their dimensions and magnificently crafted. Infinitely much effort was invested in these buildings and worldwide unique works of art were created. But the people have probably paid for it.
