Episode 15 - US Veteran Travels to Chihuahua - My Backpacking trip to Northern Mexico!
Is it safe to go #backpacking in Northern Mexico? You betcha! I had a blast learning about the culture up here, eating the delicious food, and getting to meet the locals. Just like in the US, the culture in #Mexico is different in different parts of the country. Getting to see the border town of Ojinaga, the cowboy boots in #Chihuahua, the Museo de Desierto in Delicias, and the sunset over Torreon is something I won't ever forget. Join me on my adventure!

Mexican Murals and Architecture: Palacio de Gobierno - Chihuahua Mexico - 4k UHD
Instead of visiting our family in the tourist trap known as Cancun, my wife and I decided to explore Chihuahua Mexico. We weren't disappointed. The city has amazing infrastructure, music, food and art. At the Palacio de Gobierno (Government Palace) we enjoyed splendid architecture and amazing murals. Some of the best in Northern Mexico. A nice respite from Texas.

Palacio de Gobierno, Chihuahua, México 03/Jan/2014 #1
The government office faces viewed from the North, that is, from the Angle Plaza. A young man is telling me that there is a tree made of bottles only and I can enter the office from the front to see this nice tree.

MEXICO:CARDINAL JUAN JESUS POSADAS OCAMPO SHOOTING, NEW EVIDENCE
Spanish/Nat
New evidence indicates that a Roman Catholic Cardinal killed in Mexico in 1993 was deliberately shot and not caught in a crossfire between drug traffickers as the Mexican government claimed at the time.
The death of Cardinal Juan Jesus Posadas Ocampo was the first of three high-profile killings that have shaken the credibility of the Mexican government.
Mexico is caught in the grip of narcotics trafficking...and yet another startling revelation.
Mexican anti-narcotics police have begun to stage periodic raids in known drug regions, but have not managed to stem the growth of the drug trafficking rings.
A recent shootout between members of the Mexican police and drug traffickers in the northern state of Sinaloa, near the border with the United States, show traffickers are as well armed as the police force.
Today's news sheds further light on the strength of the Mexican drug lords.
There is new evidence that the 1993 death of Cardinal Juan Jesus Posadas Ocampo was a hit and not an accidental death as the previous Mexican government had claimed.
Footage of the Cardinal's bullet-ridden body shocked the entire nation. His driver and five other bystanders were slain during the shoot out in May 1993.
Many Mexicans didn't believe the previous government's theory of the Cardinal's death - that Posada's death was an accident after he was caught in a shoot out between rival drug traffickers.
Chapo Guzman was arrested as a suspect in the case but many had suspicions that the death was a direct attack on the Cardinal.
But now government sources say new evidence suggests Cardinal Posadas was assassinated.
The source refused to elaborate on motive or new suspects but he said the attorney general's office would make an announcement by next week.
Until now the government had contended that the clergyman was mistaken for a drug trafficker because he was in a white 1993 Gran Marquis and dressed in black, as is common among traffickers.
The new revelations about the cardinal's death present yet another problem for the government of Ernesto Zedillo.
In addition to fighting the drugs war, the president is trying to cope with a beleaguered economy, rebels in Chiapas and scandals involving his predecessor.

WELCOME TO HOUSE OF CID - WEEKLY VIDEOS ON TRAVEL, EATS, STYLE & MORE! SUBSCRIBE TO OUR CHANNEL!
I've been going to visit family in Cuidad Juarez for over 30 years, and never have I been to Chihuahua. The city of Chihuahua is the capital of the state of Chihuahua. It's only about 3.5 hours from the border with El Paso/Juarez. I took a road trip with the family, and this was my first time in Chihuahua. This was also my first trip taking video on my own, I used a GoPro camera, so my apologies if the video is a bit shaky. I really enjoyed my short time in Chihuahua, there are lots of great museums and lots of great restaurants. I will definitely return to Chihuahua and spend more time there on my next visit to Juarez.
There are so many cities in Mexico I want to visit, hope you are enjoying my videos.

Cuarteto Chihuahua (Quintet) by Jose Luis Macias
My first composition for string quartet written in 2006 (Chihuahua, Mexico) now adapted to a string quintet ensemble (Dallas 2014). Thus the name Cuarteto Chihuahua.”
This piece of music was inspired by the plaza in front of the Chihuahua cathedral in 2006.The piece was later premiered in the Monterrey historic district Barrio Antiguo that same year during an art festival by some of my good friends and very talented musicians:
Violín I - Charles M. Champi (Monterrey, México) & Maricarmen Capistrán (Monterrey, México)
Violín II - Édouart Castro (Veracruz, México)
Viola - Marie Muthsamová (Czech Republic)
Cello - Lidia Muñoz (Monterrey) & Alicia Saldaña (Monterrey, México)
Special thanks also go out to Miguel Almaguer for his support, and friendship.
This piece was conceived as a dance & march, inspired by the vivacious rhythm of northern Mexican city.
This is an example of my desire to portray a great nation’s optimism, constructing towards a new and better Mexico; leaving behind the tragedy of the past violent years, and looking towards a prosperous future.
As an early composition, it is based off a simple C major scale, yet goes much further… Decorated by a beautiful amalgamation of juxtaposed themes & motifs, evoking the pride and vigor of the northern Mexican culture; composed also of upward and downward scales, that in context become melodies and evoke the mountains and cliffs of Copper Canyon in Chihuahua; a “discussion” between the high strings and low strings; all resting on a “festive” rhythm in the cello and bass… “Cuarteto Chihuahua” is truly a Mexican experience in music.
Please sit back and enjoy Cuarteto Chihuahua

The Tren de la Sabana (the savannaha train)was the engine that forge the development of our country during the first half of the 20th century. Now, this steam locomotive that refuses to disappear, offers rides through the small towns that surround the Bogotá savannah of the northern side on the weekends.

MEXICO: MEXICO CITY: METROPOLITAN CATHEDRAL RESCUED FROM SINKING
Spanish/Nat
Mexico City Metropolitan cathedral, the largest church in the Americas, is finally being set straight after years of sinking into moist clay.
The imposing church dominates the city's famed Zocalo Square and at one point tilted from end to end by eight feet (two and a half metres).
Experts say the building will continue to sink but they've lowered the high side over the last ten years to reduce the tilt and save it from collapse.
In a project that began a decade ago, workers in Mexico City have been painstakingly removing soil from underneath the Metropolitan cathedral's northern side.
Bit by bit, the high side has come down a little over three feet (one metre) - leaving the church not completely level, but good enough to prevent collapse.
It was once more than eight feet (two and a half metres) higher than the other end.
Sergio Zaldivar is the architect heading the government restoration team of 230 geophysicists, engineers and other experts.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
What we are doing is to speed up the pace of subsidence in the parts which are sinking slowest so that there is more balance as the movement in the earth continues, so that the structural elements sink together more.
SUPER CAPTION: Sergio Zaldivar, architect
He said cracks in the walls can start being mended as well as the cracks in the floor, and other parts of the building.
But he added that the problems of subsidence were ongoing.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
It is not easy to predict whether the problem of the ground can be overcome. We must accept that the process of ground subsidence, sinking of the foundations is going to be pretty much a problem that will be with us for a considerable time.
SUPER CAPTION: Sergio Zaldivar, architect
The cathedral was in trouble from the day construction began in 1573 on top of an Aztec ceremonial centre that included at least one pyramid.
Roman Catholic priests accompanying the Spanish conquerors regularly built churches atop Indian ceremonial sites in an effort to convert the Aztecs and end practices like sacrificing humans alive by cutting their hearts out.
In the 240 years that the cathedral was under construction before its consecration in 1813, architects made continual adjustments to compensate for sinking.
Work stopped when a huge flood in 1629 that lasted nearly eight years forced half of Mexico City's population to move to neighbouring Puebla.
The cathedral was erected on a masonry platform about four feet (a meter) thick that rests on a mass of short wooden pilings.
In addition to its historical importance, the building is unique because of its various architectural styles - a harmonious blend of Gothic, baroque and others.
It also houses priceless art treasures.
And it's not only the cathedral which is sinking - most of Mexico City is slowly subsiding because 80 percent of its water comes from wells that tap aquifers under the city.
Although rains are heavy during the rainy season, it isn't enough to replenish the aquifers, so the ground is compacting.
The city has sunk about 24 feet (seven metres) this century, and, like the cathedral, none of it evenly.
