119,
Malabo /məˈlɑːboʊ/ (formerly Santa Isabel) is the capital of Equatorial Guinea and the province of Bioko Norte. It is located on the north coast of the island of Bioko, formerly known by the Bubis, its indigenous inhabitants, as Etulá, and as Fernando Pó by the Europeans. The city has a population of approximately 187,302 inhabitants.[when?]
Spanish is the official language of the city and of the country as well. Spanish is the most-spoken language and practically the only one used, except some French and Portuguese.
Malabo is the oldest city in Equatorial Guinea. Many buildings in the city are built in a colonial style, dating from the times of Spanish rule, coexisting with modern buildings built since independence. The downtown streets have a square design, with pedestrian areas. This phenomenon causes a feeling of architecture attenuated by the low height of buildings in a combination of architectural Westernization and Africanism.
Oyala is a planned city currently under construction in mainland Equatorial Guinea which was designed to replace Malabo as the capital. The institutions of governance of Equilateral Guinea began the process of locating to Oyala in February 2017. [1]

Catedral de Santa Isabel Malabo in Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea
Catedral de Santa Isabel Malabo in Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea
The St. Elizabeth's Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral located on Independencia Avenue in the city of Malabo the capital of Equatorial Guinea, home of the Archdiocese of Malabo. It is considered the largest Christian church in the nation. Its construction began in 1897 with donations from parishioners, commercial companies and the Spanish government, for it was one of its colonies. The architect of the monument was Luis Segarra Llairadó, and was inaugurated in 1916.
It is a cathedral built in neogothic style that emphasizes its façade, flanked by two 40 meter high towers, and a nave with two aisles. It was named after St. Elizabeth of Hungary.
Admire the Neo-Gothic architecture of Catedral de Santa Isabel. Dominating its surroundings with twin 40 m (131 ft) spires, this capacious church serves as the seat of the Archdiocese of Malabo. Built from 1897-1916 by the Spaniards, the cathedral features a high vaulted ceiling with excellent acoustics. If visiting during service, you'll have the chance to hear the choir. Take a break at the fountain outside the cathedral--also a popular spot for local children to play soccer. Equatorial Guinea - Catedral de Santa Isabel in Malabo
Equatorial Guinea is a former Spanish colony and Spanish is the official language (the only country in Africa speaking Spanish). As such, the old town Malabo boasts spectacular and grand Spanish architecture around the Plaza de Espana and the stunning Catedrál de Santa Isabel. The Cathedral was built in 1887 and had some influence from Anthony Gaudi’s work. The neogothic building is of beautiful peach color with two symmetrical 40m/120ft tall slender towers with a fairy tale clock in between. Even more beautiful is the Plaza de Espana in front of the cathedral - with amazing bright tiles on benches and columns displaying African themes and animals. And more local happy kids posing!

Equatorial Guinea - Malabo NP
Malabo National Park lies on the western side of the city of Malabo and is not really a national park protecting anything by any means. It’s a kitschy landscaped Chinese-built manicured park grounds more akin to a Central Park in NYC but without any people. With a territory of over 870 thousand square meters, it showcases nice lawns, entertainment arenas, walking paths, and a giant statue to the President of the Equatorial Guinea. While beautiful and pleasant to walk around, it’s still somewhat surreal and totally empty and resembles the parks in Turkmenistan - except the president’s statue doesn’t rotate after the sun here. At least not yet!
Equatorial Guinea - Malabo
Equtorial Guinea is absolutely not what you expect from a Central African country, it’s more akin to Brunei or Turkmenistan - a closed dictatorship society awash with oil & gas wealth. Equtorial Guinea is almost like the Wakanda from the Black Panther, it’s the richest country in Africa and 43rd richest country in the world based on per capita income (although the income doesn’t flow nowhere nearly equally to every capita) with less then 1.2 million population. And just less then 20 years ago it was the second poorest country in Africa, when American companies discovered oil! Today, the capital Malabo boasts modern glass and steel buildings, stunning six-lane highways all around, public housing looking like posh Miami villas. Police and military presence is absolutely everywhere, as the president (after 39 years in power!) is a bit paranoid about potential coups (there have been 13 attempts). Photography is not allowed without permit officially, but the rules are not enforced.

REACTIVATED - Radio Malabo Equatorial Guinea - 6250 kHz July 27 2017
6250 R. Malabo (Radio Nacional de Guinea Ecuatorial) - Malabo. First tuned in at 2015 UTC but all that could be heard was Echo of Unification plus heavy jamming. But I waited until propagation from Korea started to dissipate (from signal absorption along the daylight path between Korea and Mount Evelyn). Actually, the Korean QRM fell away very quickly around 2125. Sure enough, Radio Malabo could be heard and clearly noted at 2130 with Spanish IDs and announcements. Then into back-to-back Afro music programming with no further announcements. A fair signal from 2130 but weakened considerably by 2210. More anncts at 2230 and the station finally faded by 2250. Great to see this station reactivated after a long absence. July 27.
Catedral Basilica de La Inmaculada Concepcion in Mongomo, Equatorial Guinea
The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception is a Roman Catholic basilica, built in the province of Mongomo in the African country of Equatorial Guinea. The temple is sometimes mistakenly referred to as a cathedral for its large size, however it is not based on any bishopric, so it does not enjoy that status. The Basilica of Mongomo is currently the largest religious building in Central Africa and the second largest Catholic church throughout Africa, after the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in Ivory Coast.
The basilica was begun in 2006, funded by the Equatorial Guinean state, and built by the Italian company Makinen Venture. Another Italian company, Ruffini Decorazioni, has been responsible for the interiors and finishes. The basilica has a capacity to accommodate one thousand faithful, and as the name suggests is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, patroness of Equatorial Guinea. Inside the basilica a replica of the Esperanza Macarena venerates, which was brought from Seville, Spain.
The basilica was officially consecrated on December 7, 2011 by Nigerian Cardinal Francis Arinze, president of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, on behalf of Pope Benedict XVI. Cardinal Arinze accompanied the Apostolic Nuncio to Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon and Gabon, Piero Pioppo, several bishops and more than two hundred priests. During the ceremony, reading the decree that the Vatican gave this church the dignity of minor basilica was given.

Equatorial Guinea - Driving Around Bioko
The entire island of Bioko of the Equatorial Guinea can easily be circumnavigated in half a day or a day at the most. Roads are in excellent conditions, there are nice towns with old colonial architecture, several nice beaches that are completely undeveloped, and beautiful vistas toward the sea or even better inland and up the towering volcano shrouded in clouds and fog. Every single town and village has a massive mansion or a whole complex that is “president’s residence away from Malabo” (which is just a couple of hours drive from any point in the island). The president likes to be unpredictable and stay in places all around so that his plotting enemies don’t know. Police and military checkpoints are many and photography if anything military or presidential in prohibited. Lucky for me - I was more interested in the green jungle. There are no tourists or any tourist infrastructure (the foreign oil executives are not interested in much beyond the oil pump or oil cash).
