Switzerland: St. Gallen - The Collegiate Church

The Collegiate Church of St. Gallen (actually St. Gallus and Otmar) is a Roman Catholic church in the city of St. Gallen in Switzerland. It serves the diocese of St. Gallen as a cathedral, and was since its construction from 1755 to 1766 until 1805 the church of the Abbey of St. Gall.
The interior of the Cathedral is one of the most important baroque monuments in Switzerland.
The Library at the Abbey is one of the richest medieval libraries in the world.
Since 1983 the Church and the Library are an UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Site.

Die Stiftskirche St. Gallen (eigentlich Stiftskirche St. Gallus und Otmar) ist ein römisch-katholischer Kirchenbau in der Stadt St. Gallen in der Schweiz. Sie dient dem Bistum St. Gallen als Kathedrale und war seit ihrer Erbauung zwischen 1755 und 1766 bis 1805 die Kirche des Klosters St. Gallen. Die Stiftskirche wurde zusammen mit dem Stiftsbezirk 1983 als UNESCO-Welterbe in die Liste der schützenswerten Weltkulturgüter aufgenommen.

聖加侖最著名的建築物，是巴洛克式大教堂(Cathedral)和修道院圖書館(Abbey Library)，圖書館大約有藏書十四萬本，其中一部分是歷經千年的手抄本。富麗堂皇的修道院圖書館，可能是全瑞士最美麗的洛可可風格廳堂。1983年，整個修道院被列入世界遺產名錄。

聖加侖的名字和創建基礎與一位叫加盧斯(Gallus)的愛爾蘭傳教士有很深的淵源，他在公元612年左右修建了一座修道院。從公元747年起，聖加侖修道院就已開始遵循「本篤規條」(Benedictine Rule)，並要求信徒研讀書籍進行潜修，修道院於是便設立了一個圖書館。中世紀時，聖加侖成爲歐洲重要的文化和教育中心。此後，聖加侖修道院得到了國際的認可，開始蓬勃發展。

The Cathedral St Gallen, built between 1755 and 1766, one of the last of its era, shines as a fascinating example of late Baroque. The high nave is opulently painted and adorned with elaborate stucco relief created by artists from southern Germany. The rich painting of the dome portrays Paradise and the eight Beatitudes of the Sermon on the Mount. Ten relief works on the back walls depict scenes from the life of St Benedict. Cathedral and its great Library remain, so impressive as to be named a UNESCO World Heritage site.

All the cathedral is a stage

The cathedral in St Gallen has served as the backdrop to the opera “Le Cid” by Jules Massenet. The piece centring around Spanish war hero Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, better known as El Cid, used light projections to transform the cathedral’s facade into a mesmerising backdrop. (SRF, swissinfo.ch)

MEET ME IN ST. GALLEN - HD | Sunday Morning in St. Gallen Switzerland

Boarded an early train from Zurich one Sunday morning and found ourselves in the middle of Old Town in St. Gallen. We followed the sounds of the churchbells and attended mass in the historic St. Gallen Cathedral, part of the Abbey of St. Gall - a UNESCO World Heritage Site. So beautiful! Didn’t understand a word of the service since it’s German, but the experience felt so surreal ❤️
