Graz, Mausoleum, Kaiser Ferdinand II. - Austria HD Travel Channel
Graz, the capital of Styria, entered the historical stage late. Although settlement activity in this area could be detected already in 3,000 BC., Graz received its town charter only in the 12th century. In Styria resided the Traungauer - earls, margraves and dukes of the line of Otakar. Emperor Ferdinand II, regarded as trigger of the 30-year war, was born and buried in Graz. With him Graz became the center of European history although he had his government in Vienna.
Ferdinand II was considered as good-natured but easily influenced ruler, who was all too much under the negative influence of his advisers Ulrich von Eggenberg and Wallenstein, who enriched themselves at his expense. Educated by the Jesuits in Ingolstadt, Ferdinand could cancel the principle of freedom of religion and forced especially Protestants into exile, a development that culminated in the Thirty Years War.
His burial plot in the St. Catherine's Church right next to the cathedral is considered the biggest mausoleum of the House of Habsburg. The oval dome of the chapel is the first of its kind outside of Italy.

Piaristenkirche aka Maria Treu Kirche, the Church of Mary the Faithful, Vienna, Austria
The Piaristenkirche (also known as Maria Treu Kirche, the Church of Mary the Faithful) is a notable Baroque church in the the 8th District (Josefstadt) of Vienna, Austria. It was founded in the early 1700s by the Piarist Order, and designed by Lukas von Hildebrandt. The twin towers were not part of the original design but were added in the mid-1800s.
The church was the scene of several historically important musical events. It was here that Joseph Haydn's Missa in Tempore Belli (Mass in Time of War; sometimes also known as the Paukenmesse, [timpani mass) was first performed, on December 26, 1796. On November 21, 1961, Anton Bruckner (who had not yet composed any of his symphonies) passed his practical composition examination with a performance on the church's organ; Johann Herbeck, one of Vienna's leading musical figures, reacted to Bruckner's performance with the words, It was he who should have been examining us.
Altstadt von Graz in Graz, Austria
A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999, the Graz Old Town is one of the best preserved districts in all of central Europe. In the heart of Graz, the Old Town features a mix of old and new, ranging from the medieval building facades surrounding the Hauptplaz (Main Square) to the modern architecture of the Kunsthaus Graz, which reflects the Old Town in its unique façade. The area includes more than a thousand buildings featuring a variety of architectural styles, including Gothic, Renaissance and Medieval. Visitors will enjoy getting lost among the narrow alleys and cobblestone streets lined with restaurants, cafes and one of a kind boutiques. Any tour of the Old Town is sure to include highlights such as the Hauptplaz and Kunsthaus, as well as the Rathaus (Town Hall), the Landhaus and the hill overlooking the town known as the Schlossberg. The latter is the site of the ruined Dom, a Gothic cathedral that is home to the oldest painting of the city.
At Altstadt von Graz, see how different cultures from the neighboring regions shaped its townscape. A World Heritage Site and living museum, the Old Town mixes many architectural styles, from gothic to contemporary. Walk the narrow alleyways alongside the Italian-style palaces, medieval facades, and modern buildings. Take a cable car to reach the Schlossberg, which is the site of the 11th-century fortress. Stop at the clock tower, the symbol of Graz. Other important sights are the town hall, the mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II, the Kunsthaus, and the Dom--a Gothic cathedral.
Gurk Cathedral (German: Dom zu Gurk, Slovene: Bazilika v Krki) is a Romanesque pillar basilica in Gurk, in the Austrian state of Carinthia. The former cathedral and current co-cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gurk was built from 1140 to 1200, it is one of the most important Romanesque buildings in Austria.[1]
With its consecration in 1174, the grave of Saint Hemma of Gurk was relocated there from former Gurk Abbey, a Benedictine nunnery she had founded in 1043 and which was dissolved by Archbishop Gebhard of Salzburg in 1070/72, in order to fund the newly established Gurk diocese and the construction of the cathedral. The cathedral chapter established in 1123 moved to Klagenfurt in 1787.
The elongated building has a westwork with two towers, a gallery, a crypt, and three apses. The crypt, with its 100 columns, is the oldest part of the cathedral. In the middle of the rural Gurktal, the imposing 60 m (200 ft) tall twin steeple of the cathedral can be seen from a very great distance.
