Cathedral Caves In New Zealand Ep 69
Cathedral Cave, found at the southern tip of the South Island in New Zealand, is carved out of Jurassic Era sandstone dating back 150 million years ago. However, these caves are somewhere between 10 and 100 thousand years old. They are only accessible at low tide. There are actually two caves that have joined creating a walk through passage way of approximately 200 metres. A must see site on the beautiful southland coast.

Rawhiti Cave - New Zealand
Rawhiti Cave is located near Golden Bay, on New Zealand's south island.
The cave's entrance is graced with thousands of stalactites that cover the entire ceiling.
It takes about an hour to walk a moderately difficult trail to the cave's entrance, but it is well worth it.

At the Edge of the World Lies The Catlins
The Catlins, New Zealand is a major highlight of the Southern Scenic Route. Situated off the beaten track, the Catlins encompasses the area between Kaka Point and Fortrose. You will journey through rural heartland and podocarp forests, past rugged coastlines, hidden lakes and stunning waterfalls. The natural landscapes are enthralling and the wildlife is extraordinary. Exploring Tuatapere (and Meeting New Zealand Locals) – New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year
Day 153: Today we are exploring the little town of Tuatapere in the region of Southland New Zealand! After failing to do the Humpridge Track, we check out what else this New Zealand town has to offer! It’s a great chance to meet the New Zealand locals and experience that Kiwi hospitality!

-- About this video --
So not everything goes to plan when we make our way to the beginning of the Humpridge Track only to learn that it’s a steep and narrow gravel road to get there and our campervan is not up for the job. Instead, we decide to explore Tuatapere!
First up, we check out the Blue Cliffs Beach in Te Waewae Bay. This is a rugged part of the South Island coastline at the bottom of the Fiordland National Park. It’s a great place for a walk, to look out for marine life as it’s part of a marine reserve, and look out for greenstone.
Following our walk on the Blue Cliffs Beach, we head back into the town of Tuatapere, drop off the campervan at the Tuatapere Backpackers and take a walk in the Tuatapere Gardens. We come across the quirky Yesteryears Cafe and Museum, so we go in and meet Helen who make amazing Pavlova! Pavlova is a traditional Kiwi desert which has to be tried in New Zealand if you get the chance.
After mingling with Helen in the Yesteryears Cafe, we head back to the Tuatapere Backpackers to feed some animals with the owner, Murray, then go mingle with some more New Zealand locals in the local bar, Highway 99 Bar in Tuatapere. Here, we learn about the famous Southland deer mating call competitions they have as well as more things about Southland New Zealand.
Although today didn’t go to plan it’s been about about meeting locals in New Zealand!

Otago Peninsula & The Catlins | New Zealand
We took a road trip from Christchurch all the way down the east coast of New Zealand's South Island to Stewart Island. We saw some amazing stuff along the way. Two of our favorite locations were the Catlins and the Otago Peninsula.
The Otago Peninsula has some amazing rugged beaches with sand dunes, raging waves, and amazing wild life. We visited Sandfly Bay, Victory Beach and Tunnel Beach. We even managed to see a few Yellow-eyed Penguins!
In the Catlins, we visited the Purakaunui Bay, Purakaunui Falls, Cathderal Caves, Waipapa Point, and Nugget Point. This is probably one of the most underrated regions of New Zealand.

Travelling the Catlins: McLean Falls & Tautuku Estuary – New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year
Day 169: Yep, we’re still travelling the Catlins and that’s because there are so many things to do in the Catlins! Today, we are checking out McLean Falls, one of the best waterfalls in the Catlins, and Tautuku Estuary.

-- About this video --
Today is our fourth day of our Catlins Road Trip and this morning we are checking out McLean Falls! McLean Falls is often said to be the most impressive of the Catlins’ waterfalls so let’s go check it out!
The waterfall is only 2km drive from our accommodation at the Whistling Frog Resort so we get there early to stay the McLean Falls Walk taking about 20 minutes to walk through the forest and to the waterfall. The waterfall is magnificent and a must do in the Catlins!
Next on our itinerary is the Tautuku Estuary Walk. This is another of the short walks in the Catlins which is best done at sunrise or sunset – however it is overcast when we walk it so we just get to enjoy the estuary views and diverse eco-system of this wetland area.
So what do you think of McLean Falls and the Tautuku Estuary? Would you add these activities to your Catlins itinerary? LUK in the comments!

Ridge Walking on the Kepler Track in New Zealand
Here are some highlights from the Ridge walk on the Kepler Track
The Catlins, New Zealand
The Catlins offers a glimpse of rural New Zealand set amid native forests, fringed by high cliffs and golden beaches. Here, you’ll find a world of waterfalls, including the tiered Purakaunui Falls, one of the most photographed in the world. The area’s many walking tracks provide access to some special scenic, historic and culturally significant sites. This spectacular coastal stretch is home to an array of marine life – sea lions are regular beach visitors, while dolphins frolic in the shallows. Keep your eyes peeled for the rare but distinctive Hoiho, the Yellow-eyed Penguin.

Catlins Road Trip: Waipapa Point & Slope Point – New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year
Day 166: Today is the start of the 5-day Catlins Road Trip in New Zealand! First, we are hitting Waipapa Point and witness an awesome sea lion fight. Then we hit the southernmost point on the South Island, Slope Point in the Catlins!

-- About this video --
Today is the beginning of our Road Trip in the Catlins! The Catlins Coast is an area between Southland and Otago famous for its wildlife, waterfalls and rugged coastal scenery. There is so much to do here that we’re gonna split this road trip into 5 days. First on the list is to visit Waipapa Point in the Catlins.
Waipapa Point is known for its lighthouse, put up after New Zealand’s most deadly shipwreck. A gravesite memorial is also there to remember this disaster. On a brighter note, Waipapa Point is also known for being a popular location for New Zealand sea lions. So if you want to know where to see sea lions in New Zealand, well, Waipapa Point is one of the best places.
We almost walk onto a sea lion disguised between the rocks. Once we see it, all we can do is watch when another male arrives and challenges the sea lion for its territory. We get to witness an amazing New Zealand sea lion fight.
After Waipapa Point, we move onto Slope Point. This is the southernmost point of the South Island and there’s not much there other than a sign and some cool coastal scenery.
So what do you think of these things to see in The Catlins? Is the Catlins Coast on your New Zealand itinerary? LUK in the comments!
