Cathedral Cove Kayak Tour - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year - Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 10: Today we are kayaking to Cathedral Cove with Cathedral Cove Kayaks in the Coromandel! It’s our tenth activity when travelling New Zealand for New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year!
Yesterday - Day 9 -
Tomorrow – Day 11 –
About this video:
Today, we’re heading to sunny Hahei in the Coromandel Peninsula to do a kayaking tour to Cathedral Cove! It’s Day 10 of New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year and our first kayaking trip of the backpacking New Zealand experience.
Kayaking at Cathedral Cove with Cathedral Cove Kayak Tours takes us to many islands and caves to explore before landing on Cathedral Cove. While we check out the beautiful Cathedral Cove Beach, our Cathedral Cove Kayak Tours guide makes coffees and hot chocolates on the beach!
Our Cathedral Cove Kayak Tours guide tells us Maori legends of the area in the beautiful setting where The Chronicles of Narnia were filmed. Kayaking in Cathedral Cove brings a different perspective to exploring Cathedral Cove.

A great day sea kayaking with Cathedral Cove Kayak tours
We launched off Hahei beach which is a beautiful part of New Zealand and one of our favourites on a tour of both islands.

Kayaking Hahei, New Zealand.
Hahei is a Kayakers wonderland with a relatively calm bay to launch from, beautiful clear water and STUNNING caves to venture in and out of. A short 2 hour drive from where we live in Tauranga, the region around Hahei is probably best known for Cathedral Cove just to the North, and for Hotwater Beach to the South, which is popular among tourists who come to dig holes in the sand and sit in hot baths of water which rise from many kilometres beneath the surface. The area is an incredible place by Sea, or by land so be sure to 'stop in' if you're ever in New Zealand. Kia ora.

Cathedral Cove Sea Kayaking // Coromandel, New Zealand
This was one of my favorite experiences on the trip–kayaking out on the open ocean and through caves on our way to Cathedral cove. The cove (accessed by ferry or kayak) is next to a beautiful beach, where we stopped to have some hot chocolate and biscuits before heading back. Several movies have been filmed here, including scenes from the Chronicles of Narnia. I highly recommend this adventure!

Fantastic open sea Kayak Tour with coffee celebretion on 13th February at 8.45 pm in New Zealand
Neuseeland, Coromandel
Wir müssen also nochmal wiederkommen!

Cathedral Cove Walk
Located at Hahei on the Coromandel peninsula, Cathedral Cove is one of the “must visit” sites on the Coromandel. It's a very popular tourist destination so visit at sunrise or early evening if you want to avoid the crowds.
But first it is important to know that the car park at the start of the track is closed, it's now only a drop-off zone, but you have a few other options to consider:
1) free parking is available at the entrance to the village instead, from there walk via the beach to the start of the walk, or
2) Use the park and ride shuttle bus available from the free parking area (It costs $5 return per person, $3 for a child and $10 for a family (2 adults 2 children)
For more up to date rates please visit: or
3) Use the water taxi service that runs from Hahei beach which is $15 per person per trip
4) Or pay a local who offers parking on their property, this might vary but we paid $10, we found this quite convenient and close to the start of the track.

All prices mentioned was valid at the time this video was uploaded, please visit the provided links for more up-to-date rates and information.
Cathedral Cove is accessible only by foot, boat or kayak, and is considered one of best short walks you can do, it offers stunning views of the Coromandel coast and takes you past dramatic cliff formations to where it ends at the iconic rock archway of Cathedral Cove.
Along the way you have 2 other side tracks which is well worth the visit, The first one is Gemstone bay which offers excellent snorkeling.
Next up is Stingray bay, this must be one of the most beautiful beaches on the Coromandel! white sand, dramatic white cliffs and turquoise water.
From here is the last stretch to Cathedral Cove, the whole track is well graded but has some really long and steep hill sections.
All drone use must be authorized by DOC
