After leaving Port Alberni and heading east on Highway 4, this video shows me on the final descent of the pass and traveling into MacMillan Provincial Park and the old growth forest of Cathedral Grove.
Towards the end of the video is the main parking area where everyone stops to walk the paths and have a look at some of the massive trees.

Cathedral Grove - Vancouver Island, Canada.

Cathedral Grove, located in MacMillan Provincial Park, is one of the most accessible stands of giant Douglas fir trees on Vancouver Island. Here visitors can stroll through a network of trails under the shadow of towering ancient Douglas-fir trees, majestic pillars untouched by the modern world -- some more than 800 years old.

Trails on either side of the highway lead visitors through the mighty stands of this coastal forest. On the south side you will find the largest Douglas firs - one measuring more than 9 meters in circumference. On the northern side of the road you'll find groves of ancient Western red cedar standing sentry over nearby Cameron Lake.

The park has been restoring some of its trails after a sever windstorm on New Year's Day in 1997, which changed the look of the park forever. The storm toppled hundreds of huge trees and obliterated sections of the trail system. Some sections of the trail system were so badly hit that they have never been reopened. Restoration and cleanup began almost as soon as the winds stopped, and although visitors will now find many of these huge trees lying on the ground, their value has not diminished. These fallen trees open the canopy to provide light, space, shelter and nutrients for the next generations of plants. Natural regeneration is beginning to restore the Grove's pristine beauty and the park's diversity, making a visit to Cathedral Grove all the more intriguing.

Cathedral Grove | MacMillion Provincial Park

MacMillion Provincial Park is a 301-hectare provincial park in British Columbia, Canada. The park is home to a famous, 157-hectare stand of ancient Douglas fir, known as Cathedral Grove, which draws visitors from all over the world. The park provides the only highway-accessible protected old-growth Douglas-fir forest in British Columbia. In 2007 Cathedral Grove made the short list on CBC television's competition Seven Wonders of Canada.

Indigenous peoples are believed to have used the area for ceremonial purposes prior to the arrival of European settlers in the mid-19th century. Evidence of culturally modified trees, western red cedar trees which have had their bark stripped off, have been found and dated as far back as AD 1137. This was on the way to Tofino from our campsite in Port Alberni. How amazing! The oldest forest I think i'll ever see. I'm glad to share this adventure, enjoy.

Exploring CATHEDRAL GROVE in MACMILLAN PROVINCIAL PARK

This was my 3rd stop on my winter road trip to Port Alberni, BC on Vancouver Island. I visited MacMillan Provincial Park, home to Cathedral Grove, on my way home, as it had been pouring rain on my way through a few days before. Because of the rain, some of the parks trails were deep in water. But, as an Island Girl, you expect mud and water in the winter. Never let a bit of water stop you from exploring! It is quite different in the summer months.
MacMillan Provincial Park is located on Highway 4, 25 km west of Qualicum Beach, and 16 km east of Port Alberni. The speed zone slows to 50km/hr through the park and there is a flashing yellow light above the highway. See this and you'll know you're there! Parking is on both sides of the highway, and is deep enough for RV's to pull into, but trailers may be an issue.
Take time to stop and read the many informational plaques along the trails. MacMillan Provincial Park covers 301 hectares and was established in 1947.
The park protects and preserves an internationally significant representative example of Douglas fir old growth forest within the East Vancouver Island and the Coastal Douglas fir Biogeoclimatic Zone. Many species of wildlife use the old-growth forest as their home including several types of woodpeckers, owls, insects, reptiles, amphibians, deer, elk, black bear and cougar. The Cameron River, which flows through the park, contains rainbow, brown and cutthroat trout.
