Cathedral Peak, Drakensberg South Africa - a walk in 4K
This is a video with photos (in 4k) from a walk to Cathedral Peak, Drakensberg South Africa in Febr 2017. This is the most beautiful walk we ever done and we have done several. Due to rain earlier in the week the last climb to the summit was too slippery unfortunately. It is filmed with a GoPro5 Black and the photos were taken with a Samsung S7. This is my first video with this camera so it is a little bit shaky in some parts.

Cathedral Peak Trek, Part 1 Video Details
Our objective was Cathedral Peak. Cathedral Peak is a mountain in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It is a 3,004 m (or 9,856 feet) high freestanding mountain in the Drakensberg.
The mountain is also known as Mponjwana (or Little Horn) by the local Amangwane people.
We set out from the car park of the Cathedral Peak Hotel. A luxury resort that makes trekking a unattractive option. Why trek when a pool and bar are available?
Liz & Hank have been arguing about this trek all morning. She would like to do a rest day at the lodge. In the end she wins. They will return to the hotel and I will continue the trek on my own.

Cathedral Peak June 2019
This is a hike organised by Durban Mountain Bakpakers Club to climb Cathedral Peak 3005 in The Central Drakensberg. We started at CP Hotel and climbed 1600m to the peak. The last part was quite technical and we used ropes and chain ladders. The views from the top are breathtaking. This was a one dash hike and after 10 hours on the trail we drove back to Durban.
Cathedral Peak January 2018
This was our first Cathedral Peak climb for 2018, and every time we climb it, it feels new. Cathedral Peak's trek is blessed with lush grass and an abundance of beautiful flowers which we were more able to acknowledge due to the lovely american couple joining us. This hike does test your limits in terms of heights. If you are afraid of heights, do it for the entertainment of those who are not, or to shock yourself. It requires some arm strength too, with some easy bouldering parts closer to the summit. The Summit is so beautiful, and breathtaking, as you reach the top, after stumbling over some chunks of rocks, you realise the peak is as small as it looks from the bottom with drastic drops all around you. I would recommend this climb for those wanting a challenge in the Drakensberg, or as a training experience for those wishing to climb higher mountains such as Island peak ( or Elbrus (

Cathedral Peak, Part 2 Video Details
In the last episode we set out from Cathedral Peak Hotel but the kids decided to head back and enjoy the hotel’s pool while I continued the trek on my own.
I continued up towards the peak’s summit area on a lazy roundabout route.
Near the horn I managed to make my way up multiple thin ledges but to go higher would require climbing gear or a fixed rope. I was clearly not prepared for this route.
A tiny ledge appropriate for mountain goats stopped me. Do I look like a mountain goat to you?
Sleeping on top of Cathedral Peak in the Drakesberg
We have been up to the top of Cathedral Peak over 20 times. And when the opportunity cane up to be able to sleep on the summit we jumped at it. The weather was perfect. And there was a new moon so falling asleep under the milky way was a truly incredible experience.

A May 2014 climb up and overnight on the Southeast Buttress route on Cathedral Peak in Yosemite National Park.
On this climb, we set camp on pitch 7 and spent one night tied to Cathedral Peak's wall.

Went for a lovely run on the contour paths at Cathedral Peak Hotel in the Drakensberg. I was having the time of my life! It is so beautiful here, I just wanted to carry on running into the mountains and never turn back.

April is always meant to be the best time to hike in the Drakensberg, but with the unpredictability of the weather while trekking up Cathedral peak we experienced four seasons in one day. There was always a sense of mystery with the fog that blurred our path. However when the sky opened up we appreciated the beauty of Cathedral peak even more. With a larger group this time we set up our own campsite just above Shermans cave as the group would not fit. Our mornings were so beautiful as we were basically in an amphitheatre surrounded by mountains. This trek was more about the journey, although the peak is pretty spectacular. You are required to have a bit of climbing experience, even though the guides help you up the last stretch with ropes, and no fear or heights. The views are simply breathtaking and are worth testing your fears of heights if you have any.
