Cathedral Range State Park, VIC | Hiking the North and South circuit
We got out of work early on a Friday and headed 90 minutes out of Melbourne, VIC to the ruggedly beautiful Cathedral Range State Park.
This was our first time at the Cathedral ranges, and in hindsight would definitely do the south circuit anti-clockwise rather than clockwise, meaning we'd climb up sugarloaf first rather than down it at the end, but we both had a really good time navigating our way through the tracks.

Cathedral Range Hike - Bushwalking Victoria
Rising like a 7-kilometer, long, tsunami of rock about to engulf the Acheron Valley, the Cathedral Range is an unmissable landmark between Buxton and Taggerty. There are a number of hikes ranging from the sedate, flat country amble of Little River track to the stress of Wells Cave track sharply rocketing up the cliff face of Sugarloaf Peak. Suitable for single day or multi-day hikes within a few hours of Melbourne, this is one for those needing a quick nature fix.

located in Victoria, Australia, approximately 100 kilometres (62 mi) north-east from Melbourne. It is situated between the towns Buxton and Taggerty and runs parallel to Maroondah Highway. The Cathedral Range was declared a State Park on 26 April 1979. It consists of 3,577 hectares and contains the rugged Razorback and spectacular peaks of the Cathedral Range, Little River and forested hills of the Blue Range. Due to its close proximity to Melbourne the Cathedral Ranges are a popular destination for both day and weekend adventures. Bush walking, camping, rock climbing and abseiling are some of the more popular activities available.

Presenting Keppel Lookout at Marysville in Victoria, Australia.
ADDITIONAL INFO:
Named after the Keppel brothers who settled in the area during the 1880s', the lookout is situated within the Yarra Ranges National Park a short drive south from the heart of Marysville. In February of 2009, the area and surrounds was devastated by bushfire with both property and lives lost. As an additional note, the two sharp points in the distance belong to the Cathedral Range State Park.

Hiking the Cathedral Range Southern Circuit , Wells Cave & Sugarloaf Peak
Myself and Poppy headed out to Cathedral Range State Park to hike the Southern Circuit an 11km, grade 4 Circuit hike located in Cathedral Range Victoria.
Summary
This Cathedral Range – Southern Circuit hike explores the southern section of the range, taking in some fascinating features such as Wells Cave, The Canyon, Sugarloaf Peak, The Razorback, The Farmyard and South Jawbone. This is a hike for those with a sense of adventure as it involves a serious amount of unassisted rock scrambling along exposed ledges and steep rocky outcrops as you make your way up to Sugarloaf Peak and along the aptly named Razorback Track.
Commencing at Cooks Mill make your way in a southerly direction along the well formed Tween Spur Road. After about a kilometre of easy walking you will reach the recently opened Messmate Track to your right.
We took the lesser traveled Wells Cave track. This is recommended for experienced hikers only as it is steep in places, requires a lot of rock scrambling and unassisted climbing and traverses some exposed ledges en-route.
On reaching Sugarloaf Peak you will be rewarded with amazing 360 degree views of the valley and ranges below.
From Sugarload Peak, the trail continues north, gradually ascending along the rocky and narrow ‘Razorback’. There is a lot of rock hoping, scrambling and abrupt drops along the way. The going is fairly straight forward and the trail easy to follow (just stick to the ridge).
Tips
Only attempt the gain Sugarloaf Peak if you have a head for heights and don’t mind exposed ledges and rock scrambling. Poles may be useful in sections. Many of the trails are steep and rocky and can become slippery following rain or misty weather. Orange trail markers have been provided in places. Generally rugged terrain will result in slower progress times. Allow 1.5-2km per hour in places.

PROTECT THE RUBICON AND SNOBS CREEK VALLEYS
The Rubicon and Snobs Creek Valleys are being targeted for massive clear-fell logging by the State government logging corporation VicForests. Both valleys along with the neighboring Cathedral Range Park form the backbone of the local tourist industry. At current logging rates the entire Rubicon State Forest will be logged out within 3 years. The trees logged in the valleys is going to feed the government owned saw-mill at Heyfield and the paper factory of the giant NIPPON PAPER group maker of the REFLEX PAPER brand.
If the issues shown in this video concern you, call the Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews and tell him to stop the logging.
