Churches in Romania
86.5% of the Romanians have declared themselves Orthodox Christians, in the latest census. What's the sound of an Orthodox mass in Romania, in a centuries-old monastery with World Heritage frescoes in the region of Bukovina, in a district church, in the Patriarchal Cathedral in Bucharest or in a small wooden church in Maramures County?

The Cathedral, dedicated to the Descent of the Holy Spirit, is located in the central park of Radauti, not far from the old Bogdana Monastery. The idea of building one cathedral with the name ”The National Union Cathedral” emerged in 1920, omagiates the Bucovina return to the motherland, Romania, in 1918. Between 1775 and 1918 Bucovina belonged to the Habsburg Empire. Effective construction lasted a lot, between 1927-1961, due to technical (location on an old lake) and economic problems and to the World War II. The Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit was sanctified on May 28, 1961, on Sunday of Pentecost (dedication day). The cathedral is built in neo-Byzantine style with Moldovan influences. The church is 60m long and 50m tall. The roof is crowned with 7 towers, the central one having a cross of 6m high and 4m wide. The interior of the church is divided into three naves separate by columns. The central tower is based on a circular portico, unique architectural solution in Romania. The iconostasis comes from the church in Rapciuni, today covered by the lake of the Bicaz hydro power plant. Above the side naves there are broad loggias and above the entrance there is a balcony that houses the choir of the church. The church has two candelabrum, of which the largest, made in Targu Neamt, weighs 420 Kg. The church was painted in frescoes in 1959-1960. The church is listed on the List of Historical Monuments in Suceava County.
