The Cathedral of Syracuse (Duomo di Siracusa), formally the Cattedrale metropolitana della Natività di Maria Santissima, is an ancient Catholic church in Syracuse, Sicily, the seat of the Catholic Archdiocese of Siracusa. Its structure is originally a Greek doric temple, and for this reason it is included in a UNESCO World Heritage Site designated in 2005.[1]

The cathedral stands as an major element of the historic core of Syracuse. Since 2005, the entire city of Syracuse, along with the Necropolis of Pantalica, was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This programme aims to catalogue, name and conserve sites of outstanding cultural or natural importance to the common heritage of humanity.
The deciding committee which evaluates potential candidates described their reasons for choosing Syracuse because monuments and archeological sites situated in Syracuse are the finest example of outstanding architectural creation spanning several cultural aspects; Greek, Roman and Baroque, following on that Ancient Syracuse was directly linked to events, ideas and literary works of outstanding universal significance.[5]

Ortygia, the old town of Syracuse in Sicily surrounded by the sea. Using many small interesting side streets to lead you to the center. The center of the town is the piazza Duomo, where the cathedral of Syracuse located. The trace of the ancient population can be seen through the remnant of the historical building in the entire city. Like many of the bay town in Europe, Syracuse also has the best promenade along the bay where you can find delicious food.

The magnificent Island of Ortigia is an essential stop for tourists visiting Syracuse: it is an exemplar of this city's joie de vivre, characterized by the unique interplay of its history and position on the sea.
Visitors to Syracuse will be happily overwhelmed by its innumerable monuments testifying to the many diverse civilizations that passed through this land.
At the entrance to Porto Grande we find the dominating Maniace Castle, wanted by Frederick II as a way to demonstrate to Sicily his power and strength. Meanwhile, in Ortygia's hear lies one of the city's most important monuments: the Cathedral. Born as a Doric Temple to celebrate the Syracusan victory over the Carthaginians in 480 B.C., it was later converted into a Christian Church, in the 6th Century A.D.
Close observation of the Cathedral allows for the admiration of the traces left behind by each historical epoch: from the columns of the original temple, to the Norman battlements and the Baroque facade that, in its limestone construction, takes on rather particular golden tones at sunset.
A stay in Syracuse should without a doubt include a visit to its famous Greek amphitheatre, which from 1914 began a brand new life by once again putting on the plays and performances that made it legend.

Syracuse is one of Sicily's most visited cities. Boosted by EU funding, derelict landmarks and ancient buildings lining the slender streets are being aesthetically restored. Settled by colonists from Corinth in 734 BC, Syracuse was considered to be the most beautiful city of the ancient world, rivalling Athens in power and prestige.
THE CATHEDRAL OF ORTIGIA (IT WAS A GREEK TEMPLE!!!)
The large Doric temple was erected on orders of the tyrant Gelon following his victory against the Carthaginians at the Battle of Himera in 480 BC. The existing temple may not have reflected the city's growing importance to the extent Gelon believed it deserved. Clearly, there was an attempt to compete culturally with Athens, the rival city that bears Athena's name and already had a large temple dedicated to her on its acropolis – the Parthenon. In 415 BC, in connection with the Peloponnesian War, the Athenians undertook an ill-fated invasion of eastern Sicily, coming face-to-face with the temple built in seeming imitation of their own. By then Syracuse was at least as prosperous as Athens. When Plato visited in 398 BC, suggesting Sicily as his model of a utopian society, it was Syracuse he had in mind.

Syracuse or Siracusa in Italian, is a historic city on the island of Sicily, the capital of the Italian province of Syracuse. The city is notable for its rich Greek history, culture, amphitheaters, architecture, and as the birthplace of the preeminent mathematician and engineer Archimedes. This 2,700-year-old city played a key role in ancient times, when it was one of the major powers of the Mediterranean world. Syracuse is located in the southeast corner of the island of Sicily, next to the Gulf of Syracuse beside the Ionian Sea.
The city was founded by Ancient Greek Corinthians and Teneans and became a very powerful city-state. Syracuse was allied with Sparta and Corinth and exerted influence over the entirety of Magna Graecia, of which it was the most important city. Described by Cicero as the greatest Greek city and the most beautiful of them all, it equaled Athens in size during the fifth century BC. It later became part of the Roman Republic and Byzantine Empire. With the emperor Constans II it was the capital of the Roman Empire (663-669). After this Palermo overtook it in importance, as the capital of the Kingdom of Sicily. Eventually the kingdom would be united with the Kingdom of Naples to form the Two Sicilies until the Italian unification of 1860.
In the modern day, the city is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site along with the Necropolis of Pantalica. In the central area, the city itself has a population of around 125,000 people. The inhabitants are known as Siracusans. Syracuse is mentioned in the Bible in the Acts of the Apostles book at 28:12 as Paul stayed there. The patron saint of the city is Saint Lucy; she was born in Syracuse and her feast day, Saint Lucy's Day, is celebrated on 13 December.
