STORYLINE:
Eastern Orthodox Christians celebrated Christmas Day on Sunday starting their festive season which will last for twelve days till the Baptism holy day.
Most Orthodox Christians - such as Russians, Serbs, Ukrainians and others - celebrate the Nativity on January 6 because they follow the Julian Calendar, which was replaced in Western Europe by the Gregorian calendar 500 years ago.
Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow performed a service on Christmas Eve (Saturday ) at the Christ Our Saviour Cathedral in the Russian capital.
The Russian church has seen a strong revival since the collapse of the officially atheist Soviet Union in 1991.
It now claims more than 27-thousand parishes and 700 monasteries throughout the former USSR.
During Soviet rule, the church continued to operate under tightly constrained conditions.
Many Russian Orthodox believers overseas considered the Moscow-based church essentially a pawn of the Kremlin and formed a splinter denomination, the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia.
Russian President Vladimir Putin was reported to be celebrating Orthodox Christmas at monastery outside Moscow.

RUSSIA: ORTHODOX CHRISTMAS
Russian/Nat
XFA
Hundreds of Russian believers prayed for good fortune in the year 2001 as Moscow's main church ushered in Orthodox Christmas on Sunday.
The service was held at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, whose reconstruction was officially declared complete this year.
The cathedral was blown up and razed to the ground on the late Soviet dictator Josef Stalin's orders in the 1930s.
Russians celebrate Christmas on January 7, which corresponds to December 25 of the Julian calendar, which is still used by the Orthodox Church.
The Russian Orthodox Church, as well as other mainstream religions, has seen revival in the past years following the collapse of the Soviet Union in which religion was effectively banned and atheism was imposed by the state.
SOUNDBITE (Russian)
People are looking for justice and constructive work. The cathedral is magnificent. We should congratulate those who built it. It's a real work of art.

RUSSIA: ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN CHRISTMAS (2)
Russian/Nat
Russian Christians filled churches all over the country on Friday to celebrate the Orthodox Christmas.
Like other religious festivals, Christmas festivities were banned during Russia's 70 years of Communist rule.
But since the totalitarian rule came to an end, Christianity has enjoyed a resurgence with one high-profile worshipper in the shape of Boris Yeltsin choosing to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land to mark the occasion.
All over the capital, Christian Muscovites thronged to church to celebrate the Orthodox Christmas.
Like other Eastern Orthodox churches, Russia uses the old Julian calendar, in which the birth of Christ is celebrated two weeks later than in the West.
Public holidays have always been an opportunity for Russians to celebrate age-old folk traditions and Christmas Day was no exception.
At Kolomenskoye, once the summer residence of eighteenth century Tsars, crowds watched and listened as musicians played traditional folk music outside the church.
This was a taste of old Imperial Russia, on a day only celebrated since the lifting of draconian Communist laws banning religious festivities.
Even in this new climate of religious tolerance, the Orthodox Christmas is a low-key affair, playing second fiddle to the more colourful Easter celebrations.
But even for the nonreligious, it's a chance to take a break from work and enjoy a little leisure time.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
It's just a holiday, but you don't notice it as a spiritual holiday. It just feels like the continuation of New Year. Everyone's lively, happy. It doesn't feel like a Christian holiday.

Elsewhere in the city, Christmas Day dog sleigh races evoked another old tradition of imperial Russia.
Husky dogs pulled skiers behind them in a race across a Moscow Park.
In Moscow's central Pushkin Square families crowded to admire the colourful street decorations, while couples strolled in and out of those stores still open along Tverskaya Street, leading to the Kremlin.
The culmination of the religious festivities is to be an evening Christmas service conducted by Patriarch Alexei II, head of the Russian Orthodox Church, in the restored Christ Saviour cathedral.
The patriarch returned to Moscow on Friday after accompanying former President Boris Yeltsin to Israel to mark Christmas with other Orthodox leaders.
The imposing, gold-domed cathedral, on the banks of the Moscow River, was sanctified on New Year's Eve so that it could be used for the capital's main Christmas Day service.
It was built over the last five years on the site of a cathedral that was blown up on orders of Soviet dictator Josef Stalin.

Patriarch’s Christmas Address | Christ The Savior Cathedral | Moscow, Russia
Orthodox Church prays for peace in Ukraine
As Russia celebrates Orthodox Christmas, the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, Kirill, has delivered his traditional address to believers. He said he prays for peace in Ukraine above all.
As millions of worshippers across Russia gathered for Christmas night liturgies on January 6, Patriarch Kirill addressed the Orthodox community with words of peace, paying special attention to the conflict in Ukraine.
“On these holy Christmas days, the prayers of the whole Church and my augmented litany are for peace on the Ukrainian soil,” Kirill said in his address.
He added that “regardless of the place of residence of its children, their political views or preferences,” the Russian Orthodox Church is doing everything possible to bring people together to help them overcome the consequences of conflicts.
Patriarch Kirill mentioned that 2015 is the year in which the Orthodox Church celebrates 1,000 years since the death of Vladimir the Great, the ruler who baptized Kievan Rus’ in the 9th century.
He pointed out that Ukrainians and Russians are bound by centuries-old spiritual and cultural ties which cannot be broken by any “external forces.” Orthodox Christianity remains the main religion of Ukraine.
The Russian president remained faithful to the tradition of celebrating Orthodox Christmas in small churches.
On the night of January 7, Vladimir Putin took part in the Christmas service at the Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin in the village of Otradnoye, near the southern city of Voronezh, some 600 kilometers from Moscow.
Parishioners this year, along with local residents, were the children from the orphanage at the Church.
The place of worship, which is included in the list of cultural heritage sites, can accommodate up to 450 members. It was built in 1901 but after 29 years of service, was closed, so the building was used as a granary. Work to restore the cathedral began in 1991 and was finished in the early 2000s.
The Orthodox Church follows the Julian Calendar, which is 13 days behind the Gregorian Calendar adopted by the Catholic Church. Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas on January 7.
