La Cathédrale d'Agen
La cathédrale Saint-Caprais d'Agen est inscrite sur la liste du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO au titre des chemins de St-Jacques-de-Compostelle. De l'extérieur, l'édifice laisse apparaître plusieurs styles : comme souvent, le chantier a été long et compliqué. Initialement, c'est-à-dire il y a quinze siècles environ existait une basilique, détruite par les Normands en 853.
Une collégiale fut construite sur les ruines. Elle-même saccagée durant les Guerres de religion, en 1561, elle ne devint la cathédrale d'Agen qu'en 1802 après la destruction de l'ancienne cathédrale Saint-Etienne lors de la Révolution. The prune capital of Agen on the banks of the Garonne is a welcoming, modestly-sized town where the living is easy. A walk through its historic centre takes in emblematic places like the very lively Place des Laitiers square, the arcaded Rue des Cornières, Rue Beauville with its old half-timbered, corbelled houses, Saint-Caprais cathedral – home to colourful 19th-century frescoes – and a fine art museum (Musée des Beaux-Arts). The latter is housed in four Renaissance town houses and contains remarkable collections of archaeology, paintings, sculptures and decorative arts, including an exceptional group of canvases by Goya and the famous Vénus du Mas d'Agenais sculpture. An absolutely must-see museum.
Gravier esplanade along the Garonne is a lovely place for a walk and very popular among the town's inhabitants, with plane trees, lawns and paths. To the north is the majestic 539-m long canal bridge that takes the Canal Latéral à la Garonne over the Garonne river. The Grand Pruneau Show on the last weekend of August is a big festival dedicated to the famous Agen prune, with prune tastings, a gourmet market, shows, concerts and so on.
Agen is the most important (the prefecture) town in the Lot-et-Garonne department of south-west France. At first glance the town is not all that tempting and some fairly busy roads lead you through some of the less interesting parts giving you a poor first impression. But, take the trouble to park and wander around Agen and there is quite a lot to catch your attention. The main shopping street is the Boulevard de la Republique which was built at the end of the 19th century. This is a lively street and this central area of town has some good shops and plenty of cafés for when you need to relax and watch the world go by. The Place des Laitiers (dairy market) is an open square where on Saturday’s you can go to the organic market. The Gallo-Roman forum was originally on this site.
Cutting across the Boulevard de la Republique at the Place des Laitiers is the Rue des Corniers. This was the town’s main street from the 13th to the 19th century. It has been refurbished recently and as well as the beautiful buildings of the rich traders you can see examples of Gothic, Roman and Basket-handle arches in the arcades. Take a look, too at the Ruelle des Juifs, one of the roads leading to the Place des Laitiers. This ‘Jewish Alley’ is the old medieval banking area. For a step back in time go to Rue Beauville, a narrow, cobbled, 15th century street with timber-framed houses.
The Tower of Notre Dame du Chaplet is the oldest visible monument in Agen is the Tower of Notre Dame du Chaplet. This is an interesting syle with the lower parts built in stone and above this built in brick. Originally this was a part of the town’s defences and in the 11th century formed part of Agen’s remparts. Later it became the belfry of the Benedictine monastery. St Caprais Cathedral has been damaged and renovated many times since it was begun in 1279. It is now an amalgum of various styles. It has a particularly fine Roman chevet and very nice chapters. It did not become the cathedral until 1796 after the destruction of St Etienne.
The Senechal’s is found on the Rue Puits de Saumon and is the oldest private residence in Agen. It is a lovely 14th century stone building that looks like it was once perhaps a church. The Museum of Fine Art is housed in four lovely mansions dating from the 16th and 17th centuries and the buildings themselves are well worth a look. The museum is one of best in Aquitaine. In its collection are 5 paintings by Goya. Next to the Museum of Fine Art is the wonderful building housing Agen’s theatre. It is a round Italianate structure with large windows and tall pillars.

The Saint Maurice Cathedral of Angers is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Angers in France. Built between the 11th and 16th Centuries, It was classified in 1862 as a national monument of France for its mixture of Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles, especially the Angevin Gothic style, and for the stained glass windows, including the transept's window of Saint Julian, considered to be a masterpiece of French 13th century glasswork.
The Cathedral of Angers ( Cathedrale St-Maurice ) was originally dedicated to the Virgin Mary. But, in 396, St. Martin, the Archbishop of Tours, added St. Maurice to the dedication. He had acquired a relic of some of the blood of the members of the Theban Legion, who were martyred, along with their leader St. Maurice, in the 3rd Century for converting to Christianity. The relic was brought to Tours and later, according to legend, a phial of it was given to Angers.
The original Romanesque church of Cathedrale St-Maurice was rebuilt with Gothic details in the mid-12th century. The single-aisle plan was vaulted with pointed arches resting on a re-clad interior elevation. The nave consists of three simple bays, with single bays on either side of a crossing forming transepts, followed by a single-bay choir, backed by an apse.
