Montpellier Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church located in the city of Montpellier, France. The cathedral is a national monument, and the seat of the Archdiocese of Montpellier. It is in the Gothic architecture style.
The church was originally attached to the monastery of Saint-Benoît, which was founded in 1364. The building was elevated to the status of cathedral in 1536, when the see of Maguelonne was transferred to Montpellier. After the building suffered extensive damage during the Wars of Religion between Catholics and Protestants in the 16th century, it was rebuilt in the 17th.
Became Cathedral in 1536 when the archbishopric of Maguelone was transferred to Montpellier, Saint-Pierre was originally the chapel of the Benedictine monastery of St. Benedict. A must see: the porch, an imposing baldaquin supported by huge circular piers 4.55 m in diameter that once bore the coat of arms of Urban V, student and teacher in Montpellier, then named bishop before being elected pope in Avignon (1362).
Representative example of Southern Gothic, it is the only medieval church of the Ecusson having survived the wars of religion. Inside, a major work by Sébastien Bourdon takes you into the artistic life of Montpellier XVII century.

This is a video I took of the interior of the Cathedral de Saint Pierre in Montpellier, France. I'm sorry the video is so dark, there aren't any electric lights in the cathedral and my camera doesn't film very well in low light; the only light to see by is candlelight and the sunlight coming in through the windows. It's weird to think that this church has remained relatively unchanged for over half a millenia... kind of like travelling back in time.

Montpellier is a city in southern France, 10km inland from the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. The town's stately Gothic Cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Montpellier, distinguished by conical towers, dates to 1364. The city's Antigone district is a chic, modern development inspired by neoclassical motifs. Paintings from French and European Old Masters hang at the Musée Fabre.
Montpellier is the capital of the Hérault department. Montpellier is the 8th largest city of France, and is also the fastest growing city in the country over the past 25 years. Nearly one third of the population is students from 3 universities and 3 higher education institutions that are outside the university framework in the city.Located on the south coast of France on the Mediterranean Sea, it is the third-largest French city on the Mediterranean coast after Marseille and Nice.
Montpellier is one of the few large cities in France without any Roman heritage and also one of the few cities in southern France without a Greek foundation. During the 19th century the city developed into an industrial centre. In the 1960s, its population grew dramatically after French settlers in Algeria were resettled in the city following Algeria's independence from France. In the 1980s and 1990s, the city drew attention with a number of major redevelopment projects, such as the Corum and especially the Antigone District.
The city is situated on hilly ground 10 km (6 mi) inland from the Mediterranean coast on the River Lez. The name of the city, which was originally Monspessulanus, is said to have stood for mont pelé (the naked hill, because the vegetation was poor), or le mont de la colline (the mount of the hill) Montpellier is located 170 km (106 mi) from Marseille, 242 km (150 mi) from Toulouse. It is at a distance of 748 km (465 mi) from the capital of France, Paris. Montpellier's highest point is the Place du Peyrou, at an altitude of 57 m (187 ft). The city is built on two hills, Montpellier and Montpelliéret, thus some of its streets have great differences of altitude. Some of its streets are also very narrow and old, which gives it a more intimate feel.

Graceful and easy-going, Montpellier is a stylish metropolis with elegant buildings, grand hôtels particuliers (private mansions), stately boulevards and shady backstreets, and gorgeous white-sand beaches on its doorstep. Unlike many southern towns, Montpellier has no Roman heritage. Instead it was founded in the 10th century by the counts of Toulouse and later became a prosperous trading port as well as a scholarly centre – Europe’s first medical school was established here in the 12th century.
Of particular interest in the old centre of Montpelier and alot to see such as :
Écusson (Old Town). Ecusson is the old town of Montpellier. Its streets twist and turn under stone arches and are named after the old businesses that resided there. The old businesses have long been replaced by modern ones but the old town has maintained its historic feel. It's easily accessible from Place de la Comédie by walking up Rue de la Loge, although Rue de la Loge itself is wide and very modernised and you should head off the main roads to get into the small windy streets. Place St Roch is a particularly nice area that is worth heading towards.
