Catherine Hill Bay Beach Caves Happy Go Travel
We went and checked out some of Newcastle's beach caves around Catherine Hill Bay and it didn't disappoint.???? Theses caves are on the southern side of Catherine Hill Bay.
The noise inside was absolutely thunderous and it was pitch black at the back of the cave. It was an absolutely amazing experience. ????
⚠️Caution should definitely be taken if you intend on exploring these caves. As they potentially can be dangerous. I had a local give me a guided tour of the area. I would only recommend going at low tide.

Catherine Hill Bay, 4x4 session
Catherine Hill Bay Wharf NSW Australia
Although the weather was terrible this morning (was raining when I left at 5:30am... didn't even think it would clear up, but luckily it did.
Look for the large eagle at 1:02 sitting on the end of the wharf. It later had a go at the drone when I got too close to their nest in the cliff face a little later on.
Some history on the Wharf:
The village is named after the Catherine Hill, a schooner wrecked here in 1867. Coal was discovered and mined by the New Wallsend Company which bought up the land, built a jetty and opened the mine in 1873. The coastal location facilitated shipment and avoided the bar at the entrance to Lake Macquarie. The enterprise employed 70-100 men, whose cottages, still lining the roadside, formed the basis of the nascent township. Approximately 1000 tons of coal a week was taken by horse-drawn skips from the mine to a loading chute on the jetty.

Freediving at the old jetty | Catherine Hill Bay | OceanChan
Welcome back to another episode of OceanChan.
This week we are at Catherine Hill Bay, around 1.5 hours drive north of Sydney. The bay is consists of a large beach area, a historic mining village and an old coal loading jetty which runs off the beach. The jetty is the highlight of this area, being around 150 years old. It has been disused for many years and slowly falling apart. However structure provides shelter for a wide range of marine life.
This episode showcases three different dives along the jetty. There are lots of sunken pieces from the jetty as well as objects from the coal mining days.
