China Tour Highlights
The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra toured China in May 2018, performing in six cities in ten days under the helm of Chief Conductor Sir Andrew Davis.
Following its successful performance and residency with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra in 2016, the MSO returned to undertake its first major China tour in sixteen years.
82 musicians and guest artists including China’s most eminent violinist Lu Siqing, pianist Moye Chen and MSO assistant conductor Tianyi Lu performed in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Nanjing and Hangzhou with a final concert in Beijing.

In a series of special programs, Al Jazeera follows Muslims from around the world as they embark on the Hajj pilgrimage.
The road to Hajj in the Land of the Rising Sun begins with the little known fact that there are ethnic Japanese Muslims.
Every day the call to prayer is made in different corners of the predominantly Buddhist country - unobtrusively within the confines of its 50 or so mosques and approximately 100 musollas or communal prayer rooms.
Kubo's upbringing mirrors that of many Japanese - their attitudes and philosophy towards life shaped by the ancient religion of Shinto.
An ancient polytheistic faith, Shinto involves the worship of nature and is unique to Japan.
While divination and shamanism are used to gain insights into the unknown, there are no formal scriptures or texts, nor a legacy of the priesthood that structures the religion.
While many historians would claim that the Japanese people lost their faith after this, recent surveys suggest that at least 85 percent still profess their belief in both Shintoism and Buddhism.

京剧《霸王别姬》。Farewell My Concubine 北京梅兰芳京剧团加拿大温哥华上演传统大戏 开启“一带一路” 京剧之旅。《霸王别姬》陈俊杰扮演项羽、窦晓璇扮演虞姬。《霸王别姬》故事反映的是虞姬和项羽感天动地的爱情，楚霸王英雄末路，虞姬自刎殉情。
除《霸王别姬》之外，其他日期和场地的表演包括《白蛇传》Legend of Lady White Snake、《秋江》The Autumn River、《大闹天宫》Havoc in Heaven、《吕布与貂婵》Lu Bu and Diao Chan、《赵氏孤儿》、《三岔口》San Cha Kou、《小宴》The Banquet。
北京京剧院梅兰芳京剧团，是中国唯一以艺术家个人名字命名的国家级表演艺术团体，创建于20世纪20年代。京剧艺术大师梅兰芳先生代表作有《貴妃醉酒》《太真外傳》《穆桂英掛帥》《宇宙锋》等。
本次出访，北京京剧院派出70人强大的演出阵容，包括多位国家一级演员经常在CCTV-11戏曲频道《CCTV空中剧院》中演出。于2017年12月22日-28日分别在温哥华女王剧院 、莫尔森加拿大剧院、拜尔剧场举行5场演出；于2018年1月3日在Royal 维多利亚皇家剧院进行1场演出。希望加拿大观众能体现京剧艺术的魅力，从而更好地推广中国传统文化。
The Mei Lanfang Beijing Opera Troupe came to Vancouver for a Canadian tour at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on December 22 and 23 for two evening performances of 'The Legend of Lady White Snake'. There is also be a 2PM matinee show of selected scenes from Beijing operas such as 'Farewell My Concubine', 'Havoc in Heaven' from the Money King etc. on December 23 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.
此次出演由梅兰芳京剧团团长李宏图带队，他是著名京剧叶派小生，国家一级演员，梅花奖获得者，文化部优秀专家，亚洲最杰出艺人终身成就奖获得者。艺术总监叶少兰先生，系著名“叶派”京剧表演艺术家，首届梅花奖获得者；1986年被美国授予富布赖特国际学者；1999年6月获美国美华艺术中心授予的终生成就奖。著名京剧表演艺术家叶少兰说：“中国的京剧艺术在世界戏剧舞台中具有独特地位和无可比拟的文化价值，要在不断发展的过程中坚守民族文化特色。此次出演将让海外观众能够更深入、更全面的了解京剧文化。”
京剧这一“人类非物质文化遗产”，被称为中国的国粹和东方艺术的瑰宝。今年恰逢加拿大建国150周年，北京京剧院与中意博联（北京）国际文化传播有限公司、天涯星灿文化发展中心合作，是“一带一路，京剧之旅”五年计划的一个美好开始。以传播中国优秀传统艺术来实现文明交流、文明互鉴、文明共存的理想。

The 2019 Tata Steel Chess India Rapid & Blitz will become the first GCT event ever to be held in Asia when the event commences in Kolkata in November. The tournament is sponsored by Tata Steel India and organized by Gameplan Sports Pvt. Ltd and was an instant hit when it was run as an independent event in 2018. GM Hikaru Nakamura won the rapid segment while the home town favorite GM Viswanathan Anand recorded a memorable victory in the blitz. ~Synopsis~
The Yellow River Piano Concerto is a piano concerto arranged by a collaboration of musicians including Yin Chengzong, Zhuang Liu and Chu Wanghua, etc. from Central Philharmonic Society ( now China National Symphony Orchestra), based on the Yellow River Cantata by composer Xian Xinghai. Since its premiere in 1969, the Concerto has become popular in China and amongst overseas Chinese. It is noted for a difficult solo part. The German musicologist Carl Dahlhause once wrote that “[t]he heyday of virtuosity began with Paganini’s tours of the European capitals in the early 1830s and ended in September 1847 when Liszt abandoned his career as a pianist.” Thus, it is not surprising for Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu to remark after listening to the concerto: “How could a nation as great as China come up with a composition as such!” The concerto, being a collective composition characteristic of China, was even recorded by the Philadelphia Orchestra. The Yellow River Piano Concerto stands out for its historical, political, and economical significance in 20th-century Chinese music history.
The composer, Xian Xinghai, wrote the Yellow River Cantata in Yan’an in 1939 during the Anti-Japanese War; it was reputedly written in just six days in a cave. r. It is an eight-movement piece in which he used traditional folk-melodies and evoked the image of the Yellow River as a symbol of Chinese defiance against the Japanese invaders. During his stay in Russia, he edited and re-orchestrated the work, which was later modified by Li Huanzhi, Qu Wei and Yan Liangkun. This edition aimed at furthering the energy and momentum of the music, and in this light, the rearrangement of the Yellow River Piano Concerto thirty years later is a continuation of that same practice. The concerto is made up of four movements.

《黄河》钢琴协奏曲取材于抗日战争时期的救亡歌曲《黄河大合唱》，这部钢琴协奏曲在创作中运用了西洋古典钢琴协奏曲的表现手法，在曲式结构上又融了入船夫号子等中国民间传统音乐元素，不仅在当时的中国引起了强烈的反响，也成为世界音乐史上最为著名的一首中国协奏曲。
第一乐章《黄河船夫曲》
引子一开始，小号与小提琴便以磅礴的气势奏出号子似的动机，木管乐刻画了船工们同惊涛骇浪殊死搏斗的情景。由钢琴急骤的琶音掀起巨浪，引出了坚定有力的船工号子。随后推出了钢琴的华彩乐段，描绘船工们冲过了激流险滩。这时，一段悠扬抒情的旋律描绘在斗争中见到了胜利的曙光。最后，音乐再现了激烈的主题音调，全曲回到号子的主题。
第二乐章《黄河颂》
深邃的大提琴奏出缓慢庄严的旋律，引出独奏钢琴的反复呈述，这是对中华民族悠久历史的追溯。钢琴铿锵有力的和弦奏出了乐曲雄伟的结束部分，铜管奏出的义勇军进行曲动机。
第三乐章《黄河愤》
竹笛声吹出了陕北高原质朴宽阔的引子旋律，独奏钢琴模仿古筝，轻快的奏出民族风格的主题。在乐队明亮宽广的发展后，钢琴深沉压抑的和弦与铜管乐的阻塞音表现了敌寇对祖国河山的践踏和人民遭受的深重苦难。随着音乐情绪的不断高涨，独奏钢琴激动地奏出象征民族悲愤的雄伟音调。最后乐队以辉煌的气势再现民族风格的主题音调。
第四乐章《保卫黄河》
引子是铜管乐奏出的号召似的战斗性旋律主题。音调中揉进的《东方红》动机象征毛主席党中央发出的战斗号召。钢琴的华彩乐句后，出现了《保卫黄河》的旋律主题。随着乐曲主题的不断发展，音乐展开了一幅幅抗战的壮烈画面。音乐情绪此起彼伏，当《东方红》主题出现时整个乐曲达到最高潮。在乐曲结束前，乐曲巧妙的把《保卫黄河》、《东方红》和《国际歌》结合在一起。
