Catoctin Furnace Ironmasters House in Thurmont, Maryland
The Catoctin Furnace complex, is significant to American industrial history and industrial archeology; the industrial site and its related living quarters illustrate the growth and development of the iron industry between 1774 and 1904. Slaves labored in the village in various capacities including iron production, charcoal making, and domestic services. There are documented cases of enslaved persons leaving this site to seek freedom; this site is included in NPS's National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Gateway program. While the 1781 Iron Master's House is in ruins, it is open for public viewing year round. A new interpretive panel will explain the role the Iron Master played in the community and the importance of this structure. The Iron Master's House is owned by the State of Maryland.

Catoctin Furnace Bioarchaeological Research
We are seeking donations to fund a bioarchaeological project that aims to uncover details about the lives of Catoctin Furnace’s earliest industrial workers. The Johnson brothers, including the first governor of Maryland, founded the namesake iron furnace there in 1776, and the details of their lives were recorded at some length because of their social standing. The second wave of furnace workers, who began arriving around 1820 from Europe, were not so highly placed, but many of their descendants still live in the area, so memories of their ancestors’ lifeways are kept alive and disseminated. Many are members of our local heritage group, the Catoctin Furnace Historical Society. However, around 1830, the last of the first group of workers, who were overwhelmingly of African descent, left the area. With one exception, we do not know where any of their descendants are, and contemporary chroniclers failed to record anything about them, save for periodic lists of first names and ages. Parts of their stories, however, remain written in their very bones, and with your help, we can decode them and share these early workers’ lives and struggles with the world. This will lead to a better understanding of a crucial, yet understudied, chapter in America’s labor history – the role of enslaved and free African and African American workers in some of the country’s earliest industrial endeavors.
The widening of U.S. Route 15 necessitated a mitigation excavation of an early area cemetery in the 1980s, and thirty-five sets of human remains were removed and transported to the Smithsonian Institution, which has become their legal guardian. Although a bioarchaeological study of the remains was conducted at the time, modern technologies like stable isotope analysis were not yet available. However, stable isotope analysis has the potential to tell us where these workers were born, where they lived throughout their lives, and what their diets were like. All of these will help reveal the lived experiences of these heretofore nameless workers. Further, Dr. Doug Owsley of the Smithsonian has agreed to conduct detailed skeletal analyses of a subset of remains (you may be familiar with the similar work he performed on the remains of “Jane,” an early inhabitant of Jamestown). Detailed examination of the skeleton can reveal details about occupational and work patterns (through, for example, analysis of joint wear and muscle attachment sites), chronic and acute injuries and conditions, and, possibly, interfamilial relationships among this subset. If it is possible to extract intact DNA samples, Ancestry.com has agreed to process these and enter the results into their genetic database, raising the possibility that we will locate living descendants of these pioneering workers and reunite them with their ancestors.
