River Stories: Cauvery river - BBC News
Cauvery river in south India has been at the centre of a long running water sharing dispute between two states Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
The Cauvery originates in Karnataka and flows through Tamil Nadu before joining the Bay of Bengal. But water levels in Cauvery have been falling due to insufficient rainfall and this has aggravated the farm crisis in both the states.
BBC Tamil service along with popular Tamil You tuber ‘Nakkalites’ Chella travelled across the state of Tamil Nadu speaking to farmers, farm labourers and family of a farmer who killed himself to find out the intensity of the crisis.

Kaveri anglicized as Cauvery, also referred as Ponni, is an Indian river flowing through the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. It is the third largest after Godavari and Krishna in south india and the largest in Tamil Nadu which on its course, bisects the state into North and South. Originating in the foothills of Western Ghats at Talakaveri, Kodagu in Karnataka it flows generally south and east through Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and across the southern Deccan plateau through the southeastern lowlands, emptying into the Bay of Bengal through two principal mouths in Poompuhar, Tamil Nadu. Amongst the river valleys, the Kaveri delta forms one of the most fertile regions in the country.
The Kaveri basin is estimated to be 81,155 square kilometres (31,334 sq mi) with many tributaries including Harangi, Hemavati, Kabini, Bhavani, Arkavathy, Lakshmana Tirtha, Noyyal and Arkavati. The river's basin covers three states and a Union Territory as follows: Tamil Nadu, 43,856 square kilometres (16,933 sq mi); Karnataka, 34,273 square kilometres (13,233 sq mi); Kerala, 2,866 square kilometres (1,107 sq mi), and Puducherry, 160 square kilometres (62 sq mi).[4] Rising in southwestern Karnataka, it flows southeast some 800 kilometres (500 mi) to enter the Bay of Bengal. In Mandya district it forms the island of Shivanasamudra, on either side of which are the scenic Shivanasamudra Falls that descend about 100 metres (330 ft).[5] The river is the source for an extensive irrigation system and for hydroelectric power.[6] The river has supported irrigated agriculture for centuries and served as the lifeblood of the ancient kingdoms and modern cities of South India. Access to the river's waters has pitted Indian states against each other for decades.

Cauvery Calling - Action Now to Save Cauvery
Cauvery Calling is a first of its kind campaign, setting the standard for how India’s rivers – the country’s lifelines – can be revitalized. It will initiate the revitalization of Cauvery river and transform the lives of 84 million people.
Cauvery Calling will support farmers to plant 242 crore trees in Cauvery basin by shifting to agroforestry, with 73 crore trees in the first phase across Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
River Cauvery and its basin has been one of the most productive basins in the world. But today its water flow has shrunk by over 40% in 70 years. In 2016, the Cauvery went dry at its source as rainfall fell by 40-70%. Ironically, Tamil Nadu had suffered some of its worst floods a few months earlier in 2015. Five hundred people lost their lives. Estimates of the damage ranged from INR 20,000-160,000 crores. And a year later in the summer of 2017, once again, Tamil Nadu faced drought – the worst in 140 years, while Karnataka stares at a 36% shortfall in food grain production. The growing trend of alternating flood-drought cycles is becoming apparent in almost all major rivers in India. Now is the time to take action.
