It rises on Brahmagiri Hill of the Western Ghats in southwestern Karnataka state, flows in a southeasterly direction for 475 miles (765 km) through the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, and descends the Eastern Ghats in a series of great falls. Before emptying into the Bay of Bengal south of Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu, the river breaks into a large number of distributaries forming a wide delta called the garden of southern India. Known to devout Hindus as Daksina Ganga (Ganges of the South), the Kaveri River is celebrated for its scenery and sanctity in Tamil literature, and its entire course is considered holy ground. The river is also important for its irrigation canal projects.

Kaveri / Cauvery originates at Talakaveri, Kodagu, Western ghats in Karnataka, flows through Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, emptying into the Bay of Bengal. Kaveri is the source for an extensive irrigation system and hydroelectric power. The cities of Bangalore, Mandya and Mysore depend almost entirely on the Kaveri for their drinking water supply.
The water for the Kaveri is primarily supplied by monsoon rains. Some of the dams on Kaveri - Krishna Raja Sagara, Mettur and Banasura Sagar.
There is an interesting belief which says, the river Ganges joins Kaveri underground once a year, in order to wash herself free of the pollution caused by the crowds of sinners who bathe in her waters all year round.
Connects Jaipur and Coimbatore, covers 2680 km. Belongs to North Western Railway.
