Belturbet on Erne River Cavan Ireland
Belturbet location is at one of the best places for crossing the River Erne. When the Anglo-Normans tried to conquer Cavan in the early 13th century, Walter de Lacy built a small fort on Turbot Island. The fort was probably made of wood and it hasn't survived, though the steep mound of earth where it was built is still to be seen.
In the 17th century Belturbet was developed by Stephen Butler, a planter from England. It became an important trading centre, and it also had an English garrison. Many of the original fortifications are in good repair. The town retains much of its original lay-out. The main street leads to the square or 'diamond' where all of the town's important buildings are situated. The parish church dominates the sky-line; some of it dates from the early 17th century, and it was one of the first Anglican churches built in Ireland. James Somers won the Victoria Cross during World War One. He is buried at the local Church of Ireland. . Cavan Town 2002
Cavan Town in 2002. Dermot Walsh one early morning in Cavan town with his camcorder. Its only 2002 which does not seem like a long time ago but even in that short space of time Dermot's video does show how much can change. Thanks for submitting the video Dermot. Dermot wrote this next piece to explain the video. My 2002 Walkabout was done for Joey Allen who lives in Preston and had not been home for 20years. The entire Allen family emigrated to England in approx 1970 and settled in Preston. Among the family were Eddie (one of my best friends) Noel, Billy, Ann, Eileen, Tony and some that I don`t remember. They were living in Tullac Mongan at the time. Their father made bridals for horses when they lived in Cavan. I don`t know what he worked at in England. He is dead now as is his wife. Two of the lads, Billy and Noel died in recent years. Joe is still alive. The film inspired him to visit Cavan and he comes home regularly now.

Shannon Pot West Cavan Ireland
The Shannon Pot in Co. Cavan is said to be the traditional source of the River Shannon, although the Shannon is now known to have come from several sources. The Shannon is named after Sionnan, who was the granddaughter of Manannan Mac Lir, or God of the Sea. She came to this spot to eat the fruit of the forbidden, or the Tree of Knowledge, which was planted by the Druids. As she began to eat it, the waters of the pool sprang up and overwhelmed her, drawing her down into it to flow out later across the land, thus the River Shannon sprung up.
The Shannon is the longest river in the British Isles.rising in northwestern County Cavan and flowing for about 161 miles (259 km) in a southerly direction to enter the Atlantic Ocean via a 70-mile (113-kilometre) estuary below Limerick city. . Shannon Pot Cavan Ireland
The Shannon Pot is the recognised source of the River Shannon. It starts as small streams high up in the Cuilcagh Mountains between Cavan and Fermanagh disappear into the limestone bedrock and join-up together in the underground before breaking through to the surface as the spring that forms the source of this important river. From this humble beginning the river grows in size to drain one fifth of the island and becomes one of the longest rivers in Ireland and Britain.
As the source of Ireland's largest river, the Shannon Pot's fame can be traced back to the very early times of the legendary Finn MacCool and the Fianna, the great warriors of Irish methodology. Legend has it that Sinnann, the daughter of Lodan, came to the Shannon Pot in search of the Salmon of Wisdom. The great Salmon was angered at the sight of Sinnann and caused the pool to overflow and drown the fleeing maiden. Thus was the Shannon created and which still bears her name today.
