When we bought this cave it was in very bad condition and it needed lots of repair. It took us quite a while to bring it into a good shape. But now ten years later we can say it looks good and we are very happy to live here.

Currently lots of people are selling their caves because they want to live in a regular house. Whereas those living in normal houses are more and more starting to buy caves either as a second or a permanent home. So people living in caves are selling them because there is a very strong buying market.

People from Guadix don't really care much about cave houses. They have been living in them for three or four hundred years. When I came here and I started my business called Casacueva.com then they started to ask: What's that? Then I told them that it was intended to make the tourists interested in cave houses. They told me about several foreigners such as French, German or English having asked about the cave houses. But what local people really care about is to sell flats and regular houses rather than cave houses.

The first inhabitants of cave houses were workers that built the churches or mosques in the area. Back in those times the cave house district was outside the city walls. Most of the owners of cave houses today are descendants from those workers.

All the noises I hear outside my home downtown make me realise how good it is to live in a cave houses where one is isolated from outside noises and disturbances. My goal is to be able to buy a cave, restore it and then live in it.
17. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Carmela Ortiz, Owner of cave house
During winter time the cave is warm and when summer arrives then it gets cooler. I like it especially during cold winter days when I stay in my room. It feels so warm and cosy!

Lots of young people are buying caves around here because they like the idea of living in a cave house. They came to stay here during the hot summer days and when winter comes they go back to their homes in the big cities.

My father decided to emigrate so he could save money to buy a regular home. But nowadays people realise that it is much better and much more comfortable to live in a cave. Some people that used to live in a cave and then migrated to cities like Barcelona are coming back to Guadix and trying to buy their former cave house so they can continue with the family tradition of living in a cave house.

LEAD IN:

Developers are buying up deserted cave houses around the outskirts of the town of Guadix near Granada and re-developing them for sale to a new generation of house buyers.

Purullena, maisons troglodytes

Among the Troglodytes
The cathedral town of Gaudix is well off the beaten path, in the eastern confines of the Province of Granada, a large, bustling country town with a personality all of its own. Its history dates back to Phoenician and Roman times, and it played a major role in the Reconquest. As Joyce Williams and I discovered, the most interesting feature of the Guadix area is that almost half of the inhabitants live underground, in the southern part of the town, in what is known as cave houses. The jagged ochre terrain and the dazzling whitewashed chimneys and doors of the caves contrast dramatically with the snow-covered peaks of the Sierra Nevada, which loom above.
